To think there’s nothing wrong with frozen veg??

My mum is a real snob when it comes to food. She doesn’t even own a freezer, everything his homegrown and cooked from scratch. Which is lovely but I’m a busy student nurse, my husband is a chef and we have 2 young children so a lot of nights we need something quick and easy. I do Cook a lot from scratch but sometimes find it easier to bung a steam in the bag beg medley in the microwave. My mum FaceTimes the kids a few times a weeks and always makes comments on what they’re eating but today she’s made comments about frozen veg being muck and you couldn’t pay her to eat it. I just told her to fuck off and hung up I really can’t be assed with it today.

Aibu or is she being a twat? It’s literally just broccoli, carrot and cauliflower that I’ve added to a tuna pasta bake to add some veg in!

I only use frozen peas as with other frozen vegs, I found them too sooty. I do tend to fry and sauté vegs though so it might just be the way I am cooking them.

reaty · 28/03/2023 19:47

Soggy!

RosesInWater · 28/03/2023 19:47

Steamed frozen broccoli and cauli are not soggy. Well not to me, but frozen carrots are like orange sponge fingers. OK in stews otherwise nope.

I use a heck of a lot of frozen veg, and I use fresh uncooked spinach and kale straight from the freezer.

Kranke · 28/03/2023 19:49

Nothing wrong with your way of cooking, or her way of cooking. She was wrong to say it was muck, but you don’t need to swear at her. Just don’t engage and don’t answer the phone when you’re cooking!

AdoraBell · 28/03/2023 19:49

Absolutely nothing wrong with frozen veg.

Survey99 · 28/03/2023 19:50

There is some veg I have no problems with frozen - green beans, peas, sweet Corn, brussel Sprouts etc. But not carrot, broccoli or cauliflower as the texture changes.

I was looking at those medely bags the other day and they looked good but 😮£2.75 for 2 one portion bags is shocking.

Hotvimto3 · 28/03/2023 19:50

Its fab. Cheap. Often already chopped up..no waste. I rely on it heavily. I love it and only really buy fresh fruit and broccoli now. I do use frozen broccoli but prefer fresh and if its just a side i prefer fresh. I also buy fresh baked pots. But a lot of tinned pots too.

Ktime · 28/03/2023 19:51

I’m trying to make space in our freezer in order to buy more and fruit.

I haven’t had luck with those frozen steam in microwaves packs in the past but will try the frozen green beans and okra.

I find fresh veg often lasts days after its best buy date so we throw out very little veg.

Maryandherlamb · 28/03/2023 19:51

It's fine! I often blend a bag of frozen mixed veg into chopped tomatoes to get extra veggies into my little ones too.

No buy the one veg only bags. Normally about £1.30
I love frozen green beans and sprouts

Albiboba · 28/03/2023 19:52

Except that it tastes grim.
The texture is so off, it baffles me when some people say they can’t see that.

WandaWonder · 28/03/2023 19:55

We have peas and corn but I think other ones taste watery, nothing wrong with it but we don't have any others

Cosyblankets · 28/03/2023 19:55

Not keen on frozen carrots and frozen peas go cold way too quickly but everything else is fine for me

Daisyinthegrass · 28/03/2023 19:57

I'm not keen on the texture of most frozen veg.

lovemycottage · 28/03/2023 19:57

reaty · 28/03/2023 19:47

Soggy!

Very much this.
There's a significant difference in taste imo.

Allwelcome · 28/03/2023 20:16

Does she make other careless comments about things she disapproves of OP?
I guess...if she's very wedded to growing her own veg etc she may be judgemental but it's not great to say it so starkly and upset you over your (perfectly acceptable) choices.

Murdoch1949 · 30/03/2023 08:03

Frozen veg is picked and frozen far quicker than fresh veg gets to the greengrocers.

knittingaddict · 30/03/2023 08:15

This is the second thread this week (that I know of) where relatives have a weird negative attitude to frozen veg. Of course there's nothing wrong with it and lots of positives. I use it all the time.

knittingaddict · 30/03/2023 08:17

Some frozen veg is excellent. Picard frozen beans are expensive but delicious. Just don't overcook frozen veg and you should be OK. Some frozen cauliflower rice is good too

DarlingG · 30/03/2023 08:19

Since having a child ive used frozen veg a lot. We will buy things like corn on the cob or a token bag of veg for the fridge but I find we end up throwing some out every week so with the price of everything it works out way better to buy frozen

knittingaddict · 30/03/2023 08:24

I agree about frozen carrots though. Probably wouldn't matter if added to a recipe, but not so good as a side dish.

mondaytosunday · 30/03/2023 09:40

Peas are better frozen as they deteriorate fast.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 30/03/2023 09:41

Frozen veg retains the same if not more nutrients as fresh after transportation.

While fresh has a better texture frozen is perfectly healthy.

Danikm151 · 30/03/2023 09:42

Frozen veg is fresher than the fresh veg you can buy. It also means there is less waste and it’s often cheaper!

ClaraThePigeon · 30/03/2023 09:48

I love frozen broccoli and cauliflower for roasting straight from the freezer or for making cream of broccoli and cauliflower soup.
