DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

There is no joy in cereal that is ultra processed crap.

All parents are doing is giving their child an addiction to sweet, refined food that is not healthy.

The level of ignorance and lack of parental responsibility on this thread, to try to create healthy eating in children, is just shocking.

Most posters are in lala land and don't have a clue.

People in glass houses shouldn’t throw homemade no-salt, extra seeded, wholemeal loaves.

you seem...upset.

there's no point getting so emotional over a thread about breakfast cereal.

can't be good for you.

Nailsandthesea · 28/03/2023 11:19

We have porridge, poached egg on toast or weetabix with oat bran. Usually fruit as well and glass of milk or orange juice and multivitamin.

wait until you have teenagers OP - mine sometimes just grabs a chocolate croissant and hot chocolate! Rather that than her go hungry!

Deadringer · 28/03/2023 11:19

When my eldest was small she loved eggs but advice then was no more than a couple a week. Advice on nutrition changes all the time, I take much of it with a pinch of salt. Oops not salt that's nearly as bad as sugar, sorry a pinch of lentils. 🙄

I wouldn’t say they are so overwhelmingly sweet that I have to repeat ‘they taste so sweet’ multiple times, no. And that comment ‘oh maybe you eat a lot of sweet things so don’t notice’ is exactly what I meant about nibbling the edge of a digestive. Do I eat lots of sweet things? No, not really, I eat a balance. Do I eat enough variety that I can realise Rice Krispies are not overwhelmingly sweet in comparison to many fruits, juices, and cakes? Yes.

But that was in response to people saying they have no sugar in them! They do have sugar otherwise why do they taste sweet? You are twisting what I'm saying. I never said 'oh, maybe you eat a lot of sweet things...' I stated that the more sugar you eat you taste it less. I'm pretty sure that is a fact. And I specifically said I wasn't comparing cereal to cakes and juices etc! You are either not reading what I'm saying or you are being disingenuous. I probably do have quite heightened taste due to Autism. I didn't realise other people don't think rice Krispies are really sweet for a cereal - me and my children do. You don't - fair enough. Not sure there's any more to argue about?

WilsonMilson · 28/03/2023 11:20

Only on Mumsnet could someone be arguing with their husband over rice crispies!

Spreading avocado on toast isn't any harder than spreading peanut butter, though?

True. But we as humans can't decide the day we serve avocado on toast. The avocado makes that decision.

Iwishicouldflyhigh · 28/03/2023 11:22

Actually the most important thing is that children have variety…. Rice Krispies every day isn’t great. Once a week fine, interspersed with avo on toast, porridge, eggs on toast etc etc, with a bit of fruit and glass of milk or water.

Yuja · 28/03/2023 11:22

My DC are so reluctant to eat breakfast that I would consider rice krispies a win, especially with a bit of fruit. With full fat milk this would be perfectly filling enough to get them to morning break.

I agree. Don't argue with him over them. Just serve them up to him for dinner since they're such a nutritionally balanced option and should fill him up nicely.

Yeah, I guess we’ll have to disagree. I don’t find Rice Krispies taste so overwhelmingly sweet that I’m blown away by it and have to mention it several times. I feel in relation to an average varied diet they are not ‘so sweet.’ You obviously do find them ‘so sweet’ in comparison to other breakfast cereals.

TheLoupGarou · 28/03/2023 11:23

Don't forget the Lentil Dahl.

IvyIvyIvy · 28/03/2023 11:23

You are completely right OP. We have been at the mercy of advertising for years telling us the contrary. Sugary carbohydrates are not the best way to start the day. Eggs/avocado/nut butters/cheese (high fat and protein) are all just as easy and much better for us all, not just kids. Good for you striving to give your kids the best start in life and to their day.

Netrandom · 28/03/2023 11:25

Honestly, the excuses for lazy parenting on this website are legion.

goldenotter · 28/03/2023 11:25

probably one of the less suitable cereals for every day. I would tend towards shreddies / shredded wheat / weetabix for cereal as lower sugar and whole wheat vs rice krispies = pure carbs covered in sugar

as an occasional breakfast that's ok!

Mumof3confused · 28/03/2023 11:13

Somebody asked what the better options would be so I answered the question. On the continent it’s completely normal for children to have a tin of mashed sardines or tuna on toast for breakfast, believe it or not. It takes seconds to mash 1/2 avocado onto a slice of toast or open a tin. Eggs can be boiled a few days in advance and kept in the fridge. Of course people might find that some goods are not accessible due to the cost of food nowadays but that’s not what the question was about. An egg provides an enormous amount of nutrients, healthy fat and protein at a relatively low cost, though.

Where on the continent (which continent?) is this a typical breakfast?

purpledalmation · 28/03/2023 11:25

I think porridge (even instant ready brek) with fruit and sultanas in, it a better option. imo you are right

Goodfood1 · 28/03/2023 11:26

What a thing to argue about ... if cereal is breakfast !!

MangoPi · 28/03/2023 11:27

UndertheCedartree · 28/03/2023 10:34

I absolutely don't think anyone is a bad parent for offering their child cereal for breakfast. I've just said it isn't the best. I have also said my children do eat cereal and that I try to get them to eat a mix of healthier and less healthy foods.

I didn't specifically respond to anyone - I am just saying there are far worse things that people can do to their children than offer them cereal and fruit for breakfast.

chocorabbit · 28/03/2023 11:27

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 08:12

This is really what i mean, I'm not against them as such. And it's not about the sugar content, I realise they're not bad in that regard. It's just that I would think a child would need more then that! (Assuming they're telling you they are still hungry.)

We had read in the Guardian many years ago that this type of cereals have been processed so much that they have no nutritional value whatsoever. It was from a book extract which had cited scientific research. In one experiment they had two groups of mice. The first group was fed with cereal and milk and the second with the cereal's cardboard box and milk (rats can digest it). The second group grew bigger. Toast is much healthier.

I give mine homemade muesli and eggs from our hens with occasional fruit treats, but hey you do you

A classic response in the genre.

'I've got my own chickens, bitches! You're a sad little povvo who doesn't have chickens. I pity your sprogs. U do u, hun'.

NoGoodUsernamee · 28/03/2023 11:30

Mine have Rice Krispies quite often, I do always offer them toast afterwards as it doesn’t seem that substantial. They sometimes say yes and other times say no, so clearly it is filling them up.

Limetart · 28/03/2023 11:30

It's surely the milk on the cereal that is the healthy bit plus all the added iron and vitamins.
Toast made from processed supermarket bread is no better really.
Dh's dm cooked bacon and egg or sausage and egg served with a thick slice of proper bread and best butter every morning for her family.
I got a bowl of cornflakes.
We're equally healthy adults.

If dc are getting a healthy lunch and dinner then I think a quick breakfast when everyone is pushed for time is not such a big deal.
