DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Just out of interest, I don’t have kids, what do schools feed children at breakfast club?

Hahahahaha. The first time Ds1 went to breakfast club he told me very excitedly that they have 'BROWN rice crispies' and 'they are very nice'. I imagine that would have actually killed some people on this thread.

Bearpawk · 28/03/2023 10:59

Would they eat egg cups op?
You can prep them at the weekend, muffin tin with omelette mixture poured in. Can add chopped up chicken sausages along with the veg. Then they just grab and go on a morning. Better for blood sugar than rice crispies.
Or wholemeal roast with nut butter rather than sugary topping? Lots of more nutritious options out there that DH can manage

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 28/03/2023 10:59

Many years later I used to have crunchy nut cornflakes, with golden syrup, milk and mixed fruit (currants etc in the mix) for breakfast, as a teen!

All those years of cornflakes etc hadn’t harmed me!

Ahh bless! Thanks!

anyone who serves me sardines on toast for my brekkie is getting a biff on the nose.

purplehair1 · 28/03/2023 11:00

It’s fine - we had this all the time mostly without the fruit though? Did you used to have cooked breakfasts as a child?

VWHoliday · 28/03/2023 11:01

YourPastryNeedsLard · 28/03/2023 10:50

Rice Krispies are actually the best one - the most iron etc. Better than bran flakes and all the "healthy looking" cereals

I was going to say this about iron. I've been researching what foods are high in iron as I'm anaemic.

Blossomandblooms · 28/03/2023 11:02

Your husband is correct and my children would be more than happy with that. Please don't squeeze the joy out of cereal!

Goldbar · 28/03/2023 11:05

Maybe start serving them for dinner as well?

Kanaloa · 28/03/2023 10:50

Do you find them significantly sweeter tasting than cornflakes? Frosties? Cheerios? Shredded wheat? They really don’t ‘taste so sweet’ in relation to other boxed cereals. They just have sugar as an ingredient. Most bread has salt as an ingredient but people are implying toast is a good breakfast option, not saying toast just ‘tastes soooo salty.’

I would say the same as corn flakes, I've never eaten Frosties, Cheerios taste sweeter, shredded wheat less sweet. Weetabix tastes less sweet as do some other cereals we sometimes have. The reason sugar is added is to make them taste sweet. They have a medium level of sugar so not surprising they are pretty sweet. They taste 'so sweet' to me. Do they not taste sweet to you? I think if you eat a lot of sweet things then maybe you taste it less. And for me toast is better if it is wholegrain because of the fibre, not because of the salt. I do find some bread/bread type things really salty too - some do have a lot of salt in them. But I've never been the type of person who adds lots of salt to their food.

Workawayxx · 28/03/2023 11:07

I think rice crispies are fine generally. I think the key thing here is that the kids were asking for more breakfast so however much they had eaten wasn't enough for them - it's not for your DH to say it's enough, they are old enough to know how much they want to eat and some people do like a big breakfast.

latetothefisting · 28/03/2023 11:08

It's not a "puff of air" though is it? Otherwise he would be serving them empty bowls. With the milk and fruit it's a completely fine breakfast.
If they wanted their "tummies filled" I'm sure they'd tell you if they were still hungry!

I can't believe this thread is 15 pages of people bitching about rice crispies and acting sanctimonious because little Hugo couldn't possibly go without his coddled eggs and avocado toast for breakfast. This website is wild sometimes.

Right? They have no idea how fucking hilarious they are. 😆

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/03/2023 11:08

Depends on the child. My eldest would be a feral, evil shit bag by 10am with just Rice Krispies. No where near enough food for her even as a small child. DD2 would be fine but doesn’t eat cereal as can’t keep milk down in the morning and there’s only so many times you can pick up your child for 48 hours at home before you switch to toast.

There is no joy in cereal that is ultra processed crap.

All parents are doing is giving their child an addiction to sweet, refined food that is not healthy.

The level of ignorance and lack of parental responsibility on this thread, to try to create healthy eating in children, is just shocking.

Most posters are in lala land and don't have a clue.

WollyParton · 28/03/2023 11:10

Protein is better for blood sugar and will help the kids concentration. Processed wheat, although cheap and convenient isn’t a healthy choice for brain function, gut health or digestion. The OP’s DH is giving them a better breakfast than I ever had as a kid in the 80s, but we know more about how different foods affect people these days, and unfortunately processed wheat still makes up a huge part of the Western diet

Nap1983 · 28/03/2023 10:51

On what planet are parents serving up sardines and toast with avocado before school? Fuck sake… I think most folk accept cereal isn’t the most nutritious breakfast but when In a rush served with fruit and as part of a varied diet I really don’t think it’s the worst. Beating in mind there are poor kids who get nothing!!

Spreading avocado on toast isn't any harder than spreading peanut butter, though?

I wouldn’t say they are so overwhelmingly sweet that I have to repeat ‘they taste so sweet’ multiple times, no. And that comment ‘oh maybe you eat a lot of sweet things so don’t notice’ is exactly what I meant about nibbling the edge of a digestive. Do I eat lots of sweet things? No, not really, I eat a balance. Do I eat enough variety that I can realise Rice Krispies are not overwhelmingly sweet in comparison to many fruits, juices, and cakes? Yes.

WandaWonder · 28/03/2023 11:11

I don't, but we could lay out one of those movie kitchen full of 100 different breakfast food things that appear like magic in the morning

Doesn't mean our child would eat it

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/03/2023 11:12

You too need to get on the same page about food so they get a consistent message. I’m more relaxed than my husband but I don’t undermine him on a school day by offering “treat” breakfasts.
So either RK are a treat or they’re not. They are quick and easy and once in a while it won’t kill them but if it’s because he can’t be arsed and they need more food than that you need to have a chat

Somebody asked what the better options would be so I answered the question. On the continent it’s completely normal for children to have a tin of mashed sardines or tuna on toast for breakfast, believe it or not. It takes seconds to mash 1/2 avocado onto a slice of toast or open a tin. Eggs can be boiled a few days in advance and kept in the fridge. Of course people might find that some goods are not accessible due to the cost of food nowadays but that’s not what the question was about. An egg provides an enormous amount of nutrients, healthy fat and protein at a relatively low cost, though.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/03/2023 11:14

I'm still gobsmacked at the poster mentioning rice Krispies as a treat? No wonder the posh kids here in Bath are constantly in Maccy Ds . I used to feed my son cocoa pops , a slice of toast and a banana as there's no way he would have eaten porridge or muesli etc

mousey37 · 28/03/2023 11:14

Its awful.

Are you friends with the mum who doesnt let her children watch Disney?
