DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

He's in a huff because you undermined him...

And rightly so. Because you did. He can feed his kids whatever the hell he wants. If you don't like it then do it yourself.

Another parent who wants to advocate a race to the bottom.

Would you also take the line that smoking 10 a day was fine compared to smoking 30 a day?

Because that's what you are saying.

You could of course say that yes, parents ought to find other foods that are better for their children.

But carry on- just avoid taking responsibility and as long as they aren't hungry that's fine.

FFS.

I have no idea why you are so annoyed. To be honest you're not being very clear.

You seem to be comparing Rice Krispies to cigarettes and implying that they will kill children. If that's what you're saying then that's ridiculous.

Rice Krispies are a food. They are not the healthiest breakfast choice, neither are they the worst breakfast choice.

CoffeeBean5 · 28/03/2023 10:29

I literally had a small bowl of Cheerios and some berries this morning😂 not sure why toast is a better option than cereal. Probably lots of butter or chocolate spread on the toast. Granola has loads of sugar in. I tend to just have eggs at the weekend (sometimes). Porridge is too stodgy (in my opinion). OP’s children will have a snack mid morning and then lunch. Hardly going to be starving on cereal and fruit. Might be different if puberty was imminent and the children were extra hungry because of it.

DannyZukosSmile · 28/03/2023 10:29

Confused Really @thisismyheart ? It's a cereal! No issue here at all!

KatherineJaneway · 28/03/2023 10:29

This is too light of a breakfast in opinion but fine as a one off.

He can, that's true - but between the two of them they really ought to make sure their children have a balanced diet. So feeding them crap does impact the OP.

anerki101 · 28/03/2023 10:30

I see people are saying Porridge and nut butter are better options than rice krispies but for me Porridge and nut Butter would be one of those instant 2 min microwave golden Syrup Porridge sachets with a heaped tablespoon of sunpat Peanut Butter. Is that really better than a bowl of rice krispies and fruit? I doubt it

beAsensible1 · 28/03/2023 10:31

OP i agree, most cereals are utter rubbish for breakfast and not enough to keep a full tummy until lunch time.

WilsonMilson · 28/03/2023 10:11

That’s because there are hardly any ingredients, not because it’s high in sugar. 30g cereal is 2.4g sugar. Not high. Way lower than most.

I didn't say it was high in sugar. It has 8% - high is 10% and above - it has a medium level of sugar. My comment was to the poster that said rice Krispies do not have any sugar in - I just pointed out sugar is the second ingredient and they are not low in sugar either. I mean yes there are loads of cereals with more sugar still doesn't mean Rice Krispies have no or even low sugar.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 28/03/2023 10:31

They are not enough. You need to only give them wholefoods like bitsize shredded wheat or porridge.

Inanun2 · 28/03/2023 10:31

WollyParton · 28/03/2023 10:24

Rice crispies will be better than a wheat-based cereal. Ideally, kids would be sent off with a decent source of protein in their bellies. Adding a boiled egg would be a good supplement at not much extra bother to DH

Why are rice crispies better than wheat based cereal ? What’s wrong with wheat based cereals ?
Personally rice crispies would be more of a weekend breakfast for me (or snack for supper) if I bought them, but I have cereal for breakfast every day wheat or oat based and dislike cooked breakfasts or egg boiled or otherwise in the morning.

Shz · 28/03/2023 10:32

Yes it is for some people.

You are being ridiculous causing a row over this. If you have such strong opinions then you sort out breakfast yourself and stop backseat parenting your husband

I think the people saying this are not thinking of instant porridge sachets.
(Although really the only problem with those is the amount of added sugar/ salt, so if you get the plain flavour it's probably fine).

Just in case anyone is reading some of these posts and thinking they might be a bad parent for offering their child cereal and fruit for the breakfast - it is honestly fine.

I committed the ultimate sin this morning - mine had COCO POPS (Scrambled egg was straight up rejected today and we were already running late)

I absolutely don't think anyone is a bad parent for offering their child cereal for breakfast. I've just said it isn't the best. I have also said my children do eat cereal and that I try to get them to eat a mix of healthier and less healthy foods.

I can't believe this thread is 15 pages of people bitching about rice crispies and acting sanctimonious because little Hugo couldn't possibly go without his coddled eggs and avocado toast for breakfast. This website is wild sometimes.

😂😂😂

snitzelvoncrumb · 28/03/2023 08:01

To be honest there have been times where I also considered it dinner.

This absolutely. And for myself with water rather than milk. Poverty in my case.

LuckySantangelo35 · 28/03/2023 10:37

Totally unreasonable

a cooked breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast is way better for filling children’s tummies

you and your husband just need to get up earlier to sort this out for them

or perhaps you could both adjust your working hours to accommodate this?

Sparkleshine21 · 28/03/2023 10:38

My child won’t even eat breakfast at all! She’s simply not hungry until mid morning. Cereal and fruit is fine

starfishmummy · 28/03/2023 10:41

MooseBreath · 28/03/2023 07:51

I had an entire childhood of a bowl of cereal as breakfast. Absolutely fine and not hungry in the slightest. You're being rather precious.

Exactly. And I rarely had anything for a mid morning snack; we just weren't a "snacky" family.

Deadringer · 28/03/2023 10:41

UndertheCedartree · 28/03/2023 10:15

A 30g serving of rice Krispies has 2.4g of sugar so 8% sugar. Anything over 10% is high sugar. Rice Krispies have a medium level of sugar.

My mistake, i misread the ingredients, its 3% of an adult's daily allowance. However I was replying to a poster who stated that Rice crispies are 'largely sugar' which isn't true. In any event, sugar isn't the devil. An ideal breakfast for many people might be porridge and wholemeal bread, but not everyone wants to eat that, not every day anyway.

I remember my very first foray into MN a few years back was reading a thread from a mum asking if it was ok that her kids sometimes ate fish fingers and chips and a lot of the responses were along the lines of how disgusting I wouldn’t feed that to a starving dog never mind my children. I read it agog, put MN away for a few years (who are these crazy snobby people). I came back to it a couple of years ago but I’ll never forget that first MN experience where fish fingers were looked on like the devil’s food😁

LuckySantangelo35 · 28/03/2023 10:43

lol at you comparing rice crispies to cigs 🤣

The true entertainment will come in future years when people discover that their children who they COULDN'T POSSIBLY feed JUNK will turn into teenagers who will eat and even drink crap, just like everyone else's teenagers

In all seriousness, I wish more people saw that not passing on excessive anxiety to your children may be less tangible and easy to track than counting every gram of sugar in their diet, but that it's actually a much greater gift in the long run.

You can be aware of healthy eating without 'counting every gram of sugar in their diet'. I can state rice Krispies are not ideal without it meaning my DC never eat cereal, I have specifically stated they do. I've brought my children up to think about balance in their diet, not to eat super healthy at all times.

My DS had his fair share of junk before his teen years. Now as a 15 yo, he eats pretty healthy as he is into cooking and nutrition. He still has junk sometimes too. He chooses to have a balance. I don't think I would have served him right by telling him rice Krispies have no sugar in them and are the same as eating a bowl of rice...

Thoughtful2355 · 28/03/2023 10:43

Mine had a packet of crisps and half a piece of toast. And they are 4 and 5 so yabu. Mine don't get that hungry in the morning and cereal is usually all they eat. They aren't going to waste away -_-
