DH thinks rice crispies are a suitable breakfast

thisismyheart · 28/03/2023 07:46

That's it really, DH would happily send children (3&6) off to school/childminder on one bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit in the morning. I feel very strongly about filling kids tummies properly before school, and while i have no problem with a bowl of rice crispies now and then, that they are ultimately just puffs of air, and the children need something more nutritionally dense.

We argued about it properly this morning, and now he's in a huff about me undermining him. I just want to guage what others think - is a bowl of rice crispies and a bit of fruit enough to keep a child's energy levels up all morning?

Add some sliced banana to it that’ll make it more filling.

Rice Krispies aren't exactly healthy but they're not the worst breakfast either. There are a lot of worse cereal choices that are filled with sugar and additives.

I would judge by whether the kids like them and whether they complain of being hungry before lunch or not.

Another parent who wants to advocate a race to the bottom.

Would you also take the line that smoking 10 a day was fine compared to smoking 30 a day?

Because that's what you are saying.

You could of course say that yes, parents ought to find other foods that are better for their children.

But carry on- just avoid taking responsibility and as long as they aren't hungry that's fine.

Smoking 10 a day is better then smoking 30 though.

The second ingredient is sugar and they are not low sugar.

That’s because there are hardly any ingredients, not because it’s high in sugar. 30g cereal is 2.4g sugar. Not high. Way lower than most.

Why do people post shit like this? Rice crispies are 3% sugar.

A 30g serving of rice Krispies has 2.4g of sugar so 8% sugar. Anything over 10% is high sugar. Rice Krispies have a medium level of sugar.

BreviloquentBastard · 28/03/2023 10:16

I can't believe this thread is 15 pages of people bitching about rice crispies and acting sanctimonious because little Hugo couldn't possibly go without his coddled eggs and avocado toast for breakfast. This website is wild sometimes.

WeakTeaStrongMe · 28/03/2023 10:16

I’m with your husband on this one.

@CallintheClownies Nothing has changed. Nutritionist is not a protected title.

Tohaveandtohold · 28/03/2023 10:18

It’s the opposite in our house. The kids want fruit and fibre for breakfast and some fruit slices but DH is always saying it’s not enough and feels they need more protein.
The kids don’t complain but he’ll boils them
eggs, makes croissants and all sorts which they don’t touch and then he moans about it.
If the kids say they are full then that’s it for me

MangoPi · 28/03/2023 10:18

Just in case anyone is reading some of these posts and thinking they might be a bad parent for offering their child cereal and fruit for the breakfast - it is honestly fine.

I committed the ultimate sin this morning - mine had COCO POPS (Scrambled egg was straight up rejected today and we were already running late)

Obviously this is because I am a terrible mother who gave her children rice crispies this very morning but I'm really confused as to why people think weetabix is amazing but rice crispies are junk - I've just looked at both packets and they're really not so very different. I also love the person saying that rice crispies are terrible because sugar is the second ingredient - they only have four! It's the third ingredient in weetabix...

I said sugar was the second ingredient in response to someone saying rice Krispies have no added sugar. I prefer Weetabix as they are low sugar and we find them more filling. Still wouldn't have them everyday, though.

I find it’s great mashed. With a bit of lime juice and salt. Spread on tortilla chips.

Goldbar · 28/03/2023 10:22

It depends. I mean, they're probably fine, but they're what I would term a "stealing my slack" kind of breakfast.

What I mean by that is that I'm OK for me to feed my DC rice crispies as we're running out the door that morning, as I've just spent 10 minutes putting together a nutritional packed lunch for my DC and I've got chilli and veg planned for dinner that evening. So overall it balances out nutritionally. I'm using up my slack by giving rice crispies but making it up elsewhere.

If we were having oven pizza for dinner (our after swimming 'slack' dinner), I'd prefer my DC to have something more nutritious for breakfast like peanut butter toast, porridge and fruit.

If my DH was doing breakfast (either weekday or weekend), I'd expect a bit more effort than rice crispies tbh, because otherwise I have to make up the nutritional deficit somewhere else since I'm normally the one feeding DC.

It's a bit like when one parent is only in charge of the DC for a weekend morning or afternoon and lets them watch TV or gives them cake, ice cream and sweets the whole time. It's annoying because then the onus is on the other parent to balance it out with healthy eating or interaction.

WollyParton · 28/03/2023 10:24

Rice crispies will be better than a wheat-based cereal. Ideally, kids would be sent off with a decent source of protein in their bellies. Adding a boiled egg would be a good supplement at not much extra bother to DH

Kanaloa · 28/03/2023 10:02

They don’t ‘taste so sweet.’ Have you got absolutely no concept of relativity? If plain Rice Krispies taste ‘so sweet’ what does a Mars bar taste like? Or a Coca Cola ice cream float? Just because something has sugar as an ingredient doesn’t mean it tastes ‘so sweet.’ This is giving those posts where a poster boasts about how they can only nibble the end of a digestive and could never ever finish one since they’re soooooo sickly. Or maybe one of those videos where people rate normal foods by how much they would horrify Gwyneth Paltrow.

Yes, a Mars bar tastes sweeter, but people are saying Rice Krispies have no sugar in them...but surely it's obvious they do as that is why they are sweet - that was my point. I don't understand why it is a boast to state a fact that Rice Krispies taste sweet as they have sugar in them? Sorry I don't follow...(I have ASD so maybe don't understand)

on a wet Tuesday morning this thread will be manna from heaven for the 'I wouldn't dream of feeding my cherub that' posse.

The true entertainment will come in future years when people discover that their children who they COULDN'T POSSIBLY feed JUNK will turn into teenagers who will eat and even drink crap, just like everyone else's teenagers

In all seriousness, I wish more people saw that not passing on excessive anxiety to your children may be less tangible and easy to track than counting every gram of sugar in their diet, but that it's actually a much greater gift in the long run.

VanGoghsDog · 28/03/2023 10:26

Why do you buy it then?

Comefromaway · 28/03/2023 10:27

Rice crispies in themselves have very little nutrition (I used to give ds who has a restricted diet and ate very little protein Weetabix Protein Crunch instead) but surely the main point is to get the milk into them. Milk is a food in itself or you can even top them with yoghurt.

‘Tastes so sweet’ implies that they are unusually sweet tasting in relation to other foods. They are not unusually sweet tasting to most people who have a varied diet and will compare them to foods like grapes, ice cream, chocolate. Most people would not rank Rice Krispies as ‘so sweet’ simply because they have sugar as an ingredient.
