Nosebleed help please!

i used to suffer from nosebleeds when I was younger, but haven’t had one in years and have forgot what to do!

my nose randomly started bleeding and won’t stop. I followed the NHS guidance for how to stop a nosebleed, but the blood is still pouring out of it. It’s only in one nostril but just won’t stop. It’s been going on for around 45 minutes now. It seems much heavier than my childhood nosebleeds although it might just seem like that as I’ve not had one in so long.

does anyone have any top tips for getting it to stop?? I’ve also ordered a takeaway to come for 7.45 but no way will I be able to eat it like this- absolutely raging!

Ring 111 for advice. A nosebleed that is heavy and continues for longer than 30 minutes requires medical attention.

Yes you need to get it seen to. You need to pinch it hard at the bony part m, it will hurt a bit.
Tilt your head very slightly forward, don’t swallow the blood.

A&E or walk in centre. Allergy season has started very early this year

Don’t pinch the bony part, it won’t do anything. Instead squeeze the soft part of your nose, the pressure should stop the bleed. Don’t keep checking to see if it’s stopped because it will just start again. Give it at least 15mins before you let go. If it’s still bleeding go for 30 minutes.

It actually stopped around half an hour after I posted my OP. It started again at 9 for around 10 minutes and stopped quickly. And I was just drifting off to sleep at 12 and it’s started again and isn’t stopping. Im leaning forward and pinching etc but even with leaning forward I can still taste it going down the back of my throat. It’s absolutely disgusting. It’s only one nostril (the same each time) so presumably there’s a cut in there somewhere. I just want it to stop- it’s ruined my takeaway night and now it’s ruining my sleep too!

Also meant to include in my previous post- towards the end of each nosebleed I’ve passed the most disgusting thing. It’s TMI but it was like a big black slug- it was HUGE and I have no idea how I didn’t feel it in my nose because it’s not been blocked and it just suddenly came out with the blood. It was like a lump of jelly and completely black so I’m guessing it was maybe mucus with a lot of blood in it. Each nosebleed has stopped fairly quickly after I’ve passed that thing. No idea if that’s relevant or gives any clues about where the bleed is coming from but just in case it means anything to anyone!

The ‘black slug ‘ is a blood clot . You really need seeing by a Dr , I’d go to A&E if it starts again , and keep the clot to show them in case they are interested .

I ended up in A&E (taken there by paramedic) with a nosebleed like that once - it had started and stopped earlier in the day, then restarted in the evening and it felt like I was choking on the blood going down the back of my throat. In the end it stopped while I was in A&E, after a doctor had counter-intuitively suggested I blowed my nose. Otherwise they were preparing to cauterise the blood vessels.

I then had a few more nosebleeds later that week but nowhere near as bad and then whatever it was seemed to heal up.

If it really doesn't seem to be stopping, it is not an overreaction to call 111 or get someone to take you to A&E.

*blew my nose not blowed (it's late...)
