To simultaneously welcome and dread spring

Ohwhatisitnow · 26/03/2023 19:25

It’s such a weird one, I’m abroad, so spring is arriving now with some heat..at first it was incredible, little flowers everywhere, the light at night again and the birds singing etc. Now I’m getting the dread feeling and almost want it to go away and stay in winter, what is that 🤷🏻‍♀️
Part of it is because I need to lose a couple of stone and dread my body having to come out, whereas in winter I can hide, but it’s not just that…I’m not sure what it is, I’d imagine most people love it and summer too. I did also when young, now, not sure
Am I a weirdo?

So I’m not the *Only one 😂

I don't really like spring and summer. Bugs everywhere. Don't like the fashion. Boiling hot nights with no air con. Working in an office on nice days.

I always tell myself it'll be nice to sit in the garden with a glass of wine at 8pm and then the bastard neighbours get the BBQ and radio out.

OldTinHat · 26/03/2023 19:42

Hat, hate this time of year. Clocks have gone forward and more expectations to be social when I'm just fat and want to hide.

I hear you!

Ohwhatisitnow · 26/03/2023 19:53

@OldTinHat Maybe that’s it, it’s more for v outgoing/extrovert people?

Uff.

I do love a proper spring, with the daffs and the tulips and the birdsong and the baby lambs and the sudden ability to go out for walks in the neither too cold nor too warm temperatures, but...

...Where I live now tends to go from winter temps to spring temps to well above 20 degrees in around 2 weeks. No daffs, except in shops and in outdoor markets being sold by little old ladies 😞

In fact, one April a few years ago we headed to Uzghorod in Ukraine (50-ish miles away due east from us) to buy our wedding clothes, and the temps hit 30 Celsius, which meant that trying on autumn-appropriate wedding dresses and suits in shops without air-conditioning was funnnn 😂

Still, Easter is coming, which means I get to roast a delicious leg of one of those aforementioned lambs, and we can gorge on all manner of chocolate goodies for a few days!

ExpatInSlavikLand · 26/03/2023 20:50

Ah, that should be "daffs being sold by little old ladies", MN really needs to allow us to edit our comments 😁

Toomanycreatures · 26/03/2023 20:55

I just cannot wrap my head around people not liking spring and summer. Blossom trees, daffodils, baby animals, beach days, warm summer evenings, drinking cold beer in the sun, country walks, the smell of flowers, swimming in the sea, the feeling of warm sun on your skin, etc. I could go on!

cityle · 26/03/2023 20:55

I feel exact same! I think it is down to we don't want to dress more summery.

It's a feeling of melancholy

Anonymouseposter · 26/03/2023 20:57

I’m not extroverted but I love the evenings getting lighter and the weather warming up a bit and the flowers opening in the garden. How is people’s weight related to whether they appreciate Spring? I don’t get it.

Ohwhatisitnow · 26/03/2023 21:32

@Anonymouseposter In my case, where I live gets hot fairly quickly once summer arrives and I inevitably have to get into shorts and dresses etc 😔I don’t like this

I live in the South West. Wall to wall tourists from May to September. You can't get anywhere near swimmable sea without driving around for an hour to find a parking space and sharing a beach towel with 6 other people.

RampantIvy · 26/03/2023 21:51

Most mumsnetters hate warm weather so you will get a lot of posters agreeing with you.

There is no obligation to wear shorts though. Why can't you wear cropped loose trousers or culottes instead?

ButterCrackers · 26/03/2023 21:54

Spring, winter, autumn but not summer. I can’t wear shorts or skirts that aren’t maxi length because of my leg vein problems. I’ve tried to have this fixed but nothing works. The heat and I’m all big and red in the face sweating. Not a good look.

Snowpaw · 26/03/2023 21:55

I love spring from the solar panel perspective.

123wentaway · 26/03/2023 21:56

I found the humidity unbearable when I lived in a hot country. Made my legs ache. Heat made any make up slide off my face within half an hour and my hair frizzed.
Bliss was sitting indoors with the a/c on or driving a few hours into the mountains. Couldn’t take those hot summers now.

Abyss23 · 26/03/2023 21:58

I love Spring but don't usually enjoy Summer as I don't like hot weather. We moved to a Scottish island in 2021 and last year was our first Summer. It was so much nicer for me. The weather was warm (when it wasn't raining! ) but never got hot. Certainly never reached the heights it got to down south. I don't think I could cope with 40 degree days. Summer here was like May down in England. Much more bearable.

DeoForty · 26/03/2023 21:58

Didn't TS Eliot say 'April is the cruelest month'? Wasteland might be worth a read for you OP.

DeoForty · 26/03/2023 21:59

I find spring bit twee. Easter is excruciating. But more daylight is nice.

Namechangedforthisonetoday · 26/03/2023 22:00

I understand what you’re saying OP. I get a really weird feeling of anxiety and dread around this time of year, and yet I love the warmer weather, the lighter nights, sitting on our caravan decking with a glass of wine! So I’m baffled as to why I feel like this every year. It’s a sick and panicky feeling that takes weeks to shake off. I do think it may be something to do with time moving on, the kids growing up - I am making no sense here 🙈😂

garlicandsapphires · 26/03/2023 22:01

I get Spring anxiety/ melancholy. Can't put my finger on why, because I also love Spring.

AdoraBell · 26/03/2023 22:05

Me too. For me it’s because I love summer, heat and sunny weather. I can’t sunbathe though because of super pale skin that burns quickly. So I’ve always used sunblock and mostly covered up but still ended up with recurring solar keratosis.

LilacRain12 · 26/03/2023 22:09

Looking forward to a bit of brightness as been so rainy and miserable lately but I also feel anxiety in the spring and summer months. Think it's that feeling of always being pressured to be out enjoying it all. My neighbours are also a fricking nightmare so am dreading them being out and yelling in the garden 24/7)....

I'm weird as well as I hate the evenings staying lighter for longer.
My favourite time of year is Autumn. Not that we ever get the ideal Autumn as it's either raining or too warm.

@Namechangedforthisonetoday
@garlicandsapphires

The Germans have a name for this and it is a real thing to feel this way:

unpronounceable German word

georgarina · 26/03/2023 22:11

I do feel more exposed in warmer weather - people are out more and wearing more revealing clothes, not just darting out wearing giant coats and coming home again! So I do get it from that pov

MrsSchrute · 26/03/2023 22:15

Snap OP!
Love BBQ's, drying washing on the line, sitting in the garden etc.
Hate all the bugs, sun lotion, sweat, and absolutely HATE wearing summer clothes!
As an overweight pasty white middle aged lady, it is impossible to look good in summer!
