To consider leaving with 18k

Voluntary redundancy has been advertised in my workplace. Not for the the first time. I currently earn £36k and would leave with half that amount.

I like my workplace, for the colleagues, the benefits, the T&C's. But I hate the actual job, and everyone is pretty miserable and feeling very unsettled at the moment.

I live with my 18yo DC who is working, and my current total outgoings are £1200pm.

If I leave my job, I will need to take a pay cut as I won't be going into a similar role. But there is absolutely not way I can do this job for the rest of my life, so I'm thinking it's best to walk away with some money if I'm going to leave at some point anyway?

I have been looking into refreshing my admin qualifications, and that's likely the role I would do back to.

Would I be crazy to take the VR with no job lined up?

Also, would I be able to claim any benefits while I was looking for a new job?

Thanks.

Your current total outgoings are £1200 pcm? How on earth?

Go for it. If they are offering voluntary redundancies now soon they won’t be so voluntarily and you will get a lot less.
So many jobs at the moment.

Yes.

This doesn't include extras like birthdays, car MOT, Christmas, but it includes mortgage, council tax, energy, petrol, food, internet, mobile, home insurance, life insurance, dentist, etc.

I just left under VR from my work on Friday and am due £84k which is nice. I’ve just been offered a temping job to start next week so the plan is unfolding nicely. I’m not allowed to work for the NHS for a certain period of time, 6 months I believe, or I’ll have to pay back some of the VR. I’ll probably just go back to the NHS eventually 😆

Good luck @needoptions Hope it works out for you.

If the company are offering voluntary redundancies they sound a bit wobbly and may not be a safe future bet. Take the money and run!

I have a DD who is stuck in a job she does not enjoy but stays because good pay, benefits and pension. Life is too precious to waste doing something you are not enjoying.
