Why is everyone so convinced you can't get mild food poisoning? So what would you call it when you eat something that's a bit off and you get diarrhoea or feel queasy for a while?

That's never happened to me. Things aren't a bit off, they are either off or not off!

Hesma · 26/03/2023 11:42

And yet you keep going back… 🤣

If you get diarrhoea after eating something, it doesn’t mean food poisoning.

If you feel a bit queasy after, that doesn’t mean food poisoning.

If I feel queasy after eating something I would label it food poisoning. I would say it didn’t agree with me.

I don’t understand why anyone who thinks because they have diarrhoea or feel a bit queasy after eating something, would jump to ‘mild food poisoning’, when there’s loads of other reasons.

It could be an intolerance, too rich, too much food, the drink you had with it, stress, you digestive system being sensitive because of other things you may have eaten or done in the last day and so on

If I eat Quinoa, I get stomach cramps. It’s not food poisoning. It’s just what happens if I eat it. It doesn’t agree with me.

and who goes back somewhere they think gave them food poisoning 3 and 4 times?

I wasn't aware of multiple cases of Pret killing people?

Of course I've heard about the case of the girl allergic to sesame who died on a plane and whose parents campaigned successfully to get food labelling laws changed.

But "multiple" cases?

Two here

and a very near miss

It's the same as being a little bit pregnant

lieselotte · 26/03/2023 12:07

I've never felt grotty after having Pret food (and often we've used them for work lunches as well as me buying sandwiches from them).

Far more likely to be another source. Unless you do just have a grotty one near you.

I've never heard anything about poor food hygiene at Pret. The allergy labelling issue which I assume pp's were alluding to is very different and has been fixed now anyway.

No it isn't! You are either pregnant or you're not.

But illnesses can absolutely be mild, medium or serious! Surely people can grasp that! You can eat something that disagrees with you but not feel that bad. Or you can feel so bad you need to go to hospital. Some people do express the most bizarre views on here.

Also not true. You can have milk which is on the turn and tastes a bit odd. Or it can be completely off and make you ill.

Milk on the turn doesn't give you food poisoning!

I think the point is that something that disagrees with you is different to food poisoning.

Choconut · 26/03/2023 12:13

If you're eating lots of different baguettes and you only get it sometimes doesn't that suggest that it might be a particular baguette that you have a problem with? Something in one the fillings causing it? I get a terrible upset stomach if I have a particular sort of their crisps - because it has a lot of garlic powder in - but I'm fine with their other crisps.

The other thing with intolerances is that they build up - so you might be able to have a little of something today, but if you have it again tomorrow and the next day then that might overload you and make you ill.

Stugs · 26/03/2023 12:14

Tbh I don't think even chunky milk can give you food poisoning, it's just disgusting

zingally · 26/03/2023 12:22

Sounds more like an allergy/intolerance.

"Mild food poisoning" isn't a thing. Believe me, if you had actual food poisoning, you'd know about it.

OneTC · 26/03/2023 12:22

Of course you can get mild food borne illness.

OP probably didn't but illness severity depends on bacterial or viral load just like with anything else

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/03/2023 12:29

I have had foodnpoisoning exactynthree times in my life.

  1. From reheated rice at a curry place
  1. From a crab sushi roll at Itsu
  1. From scampi and chips at an usully very good fish and chip place.

In all cases I was vomiting severely and frequently a few hours after eating the offending food and could not keep anything down for at least 48 hours, plus sweating, aching etc..

It is seriously not the same as a mildly upset tummy.

Also if you do get food poisoning you should inform the restaurat asap and the council as food poisoning can be fatal for some people.

An upset stomach for a few hours is pretty much the textbook presentation of c. perfringens in a healthy adult.

Doub · 26/03/2023 10:06

In that case, it must be low food hygiene standards. You MUST report this. I’d go via head office. You can’t be the only one.

It's not Pret, it's her.

ilovewispas · 26/03/2023 20:24

@JanesSadLittleLife it is strange. Took me years to figure out it was gluten but that I can tolerate some if I haven't had much lately. White bread baguettes (from anywhere) are a major culprit for triggering a reaction though!
