Does butter go on a cheese platter?

PIL are from the Sth East. They put on a lovely meal. The cheese platter came out- crackers, various cheeses, charcuterie, grapes, chutneys and quince paste- plus a bowl of butter. They both liberally, lathered butter on their crackers- ensuring it went right to the edge- then added chutney and cheese etc.

I've never noticed butter on a cheese platter before, nor would I ever consider it was needed. Each to their own, but AIBU?

YABU- of course you need butter
YANBU- there is no need for it in addition to the other toppings

I do like a buttery cracker.

GrumpyPanda · 25/03/2023 19:31

Total sacrilege with a cheese platter.

HowcanIgetoutofthisalive · 25/03/2023 19:33

Very rare to get butter with a cheese board but I LOVE butter on my crackers and cheese!

Nospringchix · 25/03/2023 19:34

Ooh yes, for me there has to be butter!

Neverknowinglysensible · 25/03/2023 19:38

My dad always says about butter, ‘Bad cheese needs it, good cheese deserves it’.
I always used to be very sniffy about butter with cheese, but as I get older I’ve started to like it.

BeanCounterBabe · 25/03/2023 19:40

Crackers are too dry without butter. Absolutely essential.

Tailfeather · 25/03/2023 19:41

I agree that you don't usually get it but that it is YUM!

OldTinHat · 25/03/2023 19:42

I upgraded on a ferry recently and my cheese and crackers came with butter. I was very happy!

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 19:42

Maybe if it was just your basic cheddar and crackers. Not to sully posh cheese.

My sister however would want butter, but then she also has butter under peanut butter and under cream and jam on a scone. Psycho. Thin as a rake tho.

Luredbyapomegranate · 25/03/2023 19:43

But slathering it on like they are laying a brick wall is funny. Have they not heard of breaking a cracker up into bite size pieces?

Leeds2 · 25/03/2023 19:45

Absolutely not!

NoSquirrels · 25/03/2023 19:46

I wouldn’t expect it on a posh cheese board, at a restaurant, say (but I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it either).

I’d be disappointed not to be able to put butter on a bog standard cream cracker with Cheddar. I’d never put butter on a cracker with Brie.

Some things need it, some don’t.

Itsmyturnnow1 · 25/03/2023 19:48

So because they’re from the South East they must be some kind of peasants?! You sound very stuck up!

Blort · 25/03/2023 19:50

It doesnt go on a cheese platter but does go on a cheese cracker!

PuttingDownRoots · 25/03/2023 19:53

I've beento many black tie events... always butter available!

It depends on the cheese... a roule has different needs to a wensleydale for example.

SamMil · 25/03/2023 19:53

I wouldn't expect butter to come with cheese and crackers at a restaurant but I always have butter at home, with all types of cheese. It makes it so much better! I also butter right up to the edges of the cracker😄

(I'm also from the South East if that helps..!)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/03/2023 19:54

Personally I think butter (or any spread) is the Devils Work but I would put curls of butter or tiny glass pots of butter out with a cheese and cracker board.
Just making sure it was nowhere near me !

bellac11 · 25/03/2023 19:55

Love butter and have asked for it in the past on the hope in restaurants, they normally oblige, I dont care if they think Im heathen

I also happen to like putting quince or chutney on the buttery cracker with no cheese.

I also ask for it on a cream tea. Take that!!

TinySaltLick · 25/03/2023 19:59

Its not typically part of a cheese board, it isn't necessary and doesn't add to the cheese - but I wouldn't begrudge someone from adding it

Butter does make every food better without exception so maybe they are on to a good thing

Crancod · 25/03/2023 20:03

Am a very big fan of cheese boards and have never, in my life, seen or heard of anyone buttering crackers. Thread’s an eye opener!

CatOnTheChair · 25/03/2023 20:09

I'd much rather eat a chunk of cheese on its own, and a fully buttered cracker separatly. I think both are better on their own rather than combined.
So, personally I'd like (salted) butter.

TheChosenTwo · 25/03/2023 20:13

I’ve not voted as I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have butter with a cheeseboard nor do I really have butter with a cheeseboard if our or if I make one at home but then I tend to eat the cheeses that are all gooey and attempting to run off the plate.
I do however bloody love butter though so would welcome it in any food situation.

Of course, I'm clearly stuck up for saying where PIL are from! 🙄

I'm not British, and on MN there is always the regional thing- 'Oh, it must be a Northern/Southern thing' so as to not drip feed and someone ask where they are from- I said in my OP!

A good salted or anchovy butter is a thing of joy

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 25/03/2023 21:22

if there was crusty bread definitely but not with crackers
