Children growing up making you feel OLD!

Jourdain11 · 25/03/2023 16:16

My DD1 has her birthday in couple of weeks and she will be 11.

The age '11' has suddenly hit me - as has the realisation that my children are no longer 'little children' (10, 9 and 7 currently).

I don't feel old enough or grown up enough to have big children!

Has anyone else felt like this? I don't know why, but I'm quite disconcerted! I think it's magnified by the fact that most of my friends and colleagues have 5 year old, or toddlers, or babies (or are pregnant).

My ds is 14. The number doesn't shock me as much as the fact that he can now out-ski me, out-cycle me, and is marginally taller than me.

I can still out-run him (just) but that won't last much longer.

My baby boy is a man 😯

Furrydogmum · 25/03/2023 16:30

Ha! My youngest is 21 this year, oldest 25 and getting married.. I feel old!

Cherrybl0ssm · 25/03/2023 16:32

When I went to uni open days with my son I felt really old. Also when helping with school photos for the leavers.
You remember it when you were there like yesterday but in the kids eyes you are ancient 😂

MamaCanYouBuyMeABanana · 25/03/2023 16:33

My eldest is 21, next one down is 18, I don't feel grown up enough to have raised these two responsible, mature, wonderful men, who are in the world of work, one is living in his own place, and the other doing a degree, while I'm over here still laughing at fart jokes and saying "that's what she said" to anything that could vaguely be misconstrued 🤣

It's a weird feeling.

MissMooley · 25/03/2023 16:35

I had to order my ds leaving hoody this week. I think age 11 hit me too with the others, off to big school, getting more teen like.
My eldest will be 20 soon and the fact she's coming out of her teens really gets me!

Mangogogogo · 25/03/2023 16:35

I have two teenagers and a child. Recently when buying a new car I was all ‘we need a big one cos we have three little kids’

no we don’t!! And we bought a smaller one!

ktitten · 25/03/2023 16:46

My DD is passed the stage where she can borrow my wellies and almost taller than me. No way do I feel old enough or responsible enough for it. Always said I'd be hard done with having anymore kids at 30 and that's just happened so that's it for me, no more babies or squishy toddler cuddles. It really does fly by doesn't it?

Poetnojo · 25/03/2023 16:52

I just dropped my 26 year old 6 ft 2 hairy son back to the airport as he has lived in a different country for the last 18 months. We also have a 19 year old daughter who's half way through her degree, our 12 year old son will be starting secondary school in September and our 4 year old twins will be starting primary in September. I feel ancient.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 25/03/2023 16:53

My eldest is 25 & about to make me a grandmother. Really doesn't feel possible! Youngest turns 18 this year, again how is that possible? 😁

When youngest hit 10 - double digits - that started making me feel old.

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 25/03/2023 16:53

My dd is 34 this year. I will be 52!!

Bunnyhascovidnoteggs · 25/03/2023 16:54

Actually will still be 51!

Poetnojo · 25/03/2023 16:54

Oh, and I'm already looking up at my 12 year old son, and I'm 5 ft 9

elp30 · 25/03/2023 16:55

I'm 52 but my oldest grandchild is 10!
That makes me feel old!

MrFlibblesEyes · 25/03/2023 17:16

I'm squishing my three year old in a big cuddle as I read this in hope that I can freeze time for a bit and keep him as adorable as he currently is ...

Redminionpenguin · 25/03/2023 17:30

I have 3 teens and I think these moments come from time to time. Looking up to them when they become taller than you, moving schools, them asking how your days been and be really interested, passing exams and driving test, going to college, getting a job, buying a car. These events suddenly make you sit up and realise they're growing up.
The last one I had was dc19 telling me someone he'd been at school with had just had a baby and I suddenly realised I could potentially be a grandmother (I'm hoping not for a while).
I think these moments are double edged it's lovely they're achieving, growing learning and becoming more independent (which is a parents job) but with that you loose control over them and you worry about them more, you see them less and other things become a bigger influence than you and you just have to hope you've given them the tools to survive.

Mumof1andacat · 25/03/2023 17:35

I am really enjoyed my ds growing up. He's still cute (might be nearly my height and have bigger feet than but I'm short anyway)he still the chatty friendly chap he always had been. Just bigger

mackthepony · 25/03/2023 17:44

Ds is 9 and his feet are as big as mine

Makes me realize he's not small no more

CrotchetyCrocheting · 25/03/2023 17:46

I've had this a bit lately. My ds has just turned 16 and my dd is recently 13 and I now have teens, not children really, teens. They are experiencing so many firsts lately, first relationships, first discos, first trip into the city alone with friends etc and they are so excited by all of the possibilities ahead of them and its so lovely to see them growing up but fucking hell it makes you feel old. Not to mention the fact that fashions I wore as I teen are back in and now dd is strutting around like teen me while I'm out tramping through mucky woods with the dogs looking like a swamp creature 😂

Jourdain11 · 25/03/2023 17:48

I think the realisation that DD will be going to secondary (by herself on the tube every day!) in September has really brought it home too. And meanwhile, I got ID'd buying a can of Tenzing in Waitrose the other day.

DS is 11 in a week and I can’t wait for him to get a bit more mature and independent!

Conkersinautumn · 25/03/2023 17:52

My eldest got her first full time job. So proud of her. Bitter sweet moments like this are great at times

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 25/03/2023 17:53

DD turned 10 two weeks ago. She's had her hair cut today too, gone is the basic chop an inch off. She had researched on Google and wanted a butterfly cut with layers. (Which is what she's now sporting!).
oh and blinkin hormones?!?! She is a mini me.
I feel so bloody old right now. I tried singing a song earlier and she told me to stop trying to be cool, I'm way tooooo old for it. 😩
