Any slow cooker experts?

I've just put 2 big tablespoons of peanut butter, a tin of coconut milk, a few chopped potatoes, garlic and 2 steaks chopped into cubes into the slow cooker for 4 hours. I'm now worried I've ruined 2 steaks. Will that become a delicious beef satay? It seems too simple.

I would have thought you’d have been better using a cheaper cut of meat designed for slow cooking. It won’t spoil the dish to use a couple of steaks but it will make it more expensive than necessary

Comedycook · 25/03/2023 14:59

Wha cut of meat did you use? I wouldn't have wasted good steaks in a slow cooker...you need a braising/stewing cut of beef. Still it will probably turn out ok...

Where did you get the 'recipe' from?

I screenshot the recipe at work yesterday. Can't find the recipe. I'd searched something like, 'easy beef satay slow cooker'. I had the steaks in.

Sounds like you might want to add some more flavour? Maybe soy sauce, onion, ginger? Possibly another veg as well?

CorvusPurpureus · 25/03/2023 15:10

I'd say you need some spices in that - as a minimum, chilli, garlic, ginger & a dash of soy sauce. & yes, slow cookers work better with cheaper cuts!

But it won't be horrible. A bit bland.

MrsFinkelstein · 25/03/2023 15:14

You won't have ruined them, but I'd say they'd need longer than 4 hrs to be really tender.

I'd also add some soy sauce & ginger (but that's just my preference).

I make a similar curry with chicken.

Thanks. I wasn't sure. Can I add it at the end and stir it around?

I'd add them now to let them marinate.

Garman · 25/03/2023 15:17

You need spices, curry powder, definitely won't become a satay. Chicken or cheaper meat cuts would work well, waste of good steak.

cocksstrideintheevening · 25/03/2023 15:19

Don't put steak in a slow cooker!

It'll be ok, I'd cook it for less that 4 hours though.

How much curry powder

OP posts:
coodawoodashooda · 25/03/2023 15:55

That's the ginger in, soy sauce and some mild curry powder. Hopefully that's it sorted. Thank you everyone.

I don't know how much of everything you have so no point asking me. Use a better recipe next time, an actual complete one.

@Garman helpful! Why not just ignore rather be so snarky?

The potatoes will take every bit of that 4 hours and probably then some.

Meat cooks a lot faster in a slow cooker than veggies do.

Bearpawk · 25/03/2023 17:06

Sounds very bland.
I'd add soy, ginger, chilli, maybe some of that yellow curry powder. Chopped coriander at the end.

A question was asked of me.

Lcb123 · 25/03/2023 17:24

I always fry meat and veg first before putting in slow cooker, as meat won’t brown otherwise. And I wouldn’t use steak-slow cooker ideally for cheaper meats. BBC good food has lovely recipes

Mamiamamia · 25/03/2023 17:31

I find when I put coconut milk into the slow cooker at the beginning it just turns into an oily rancid tasting sauce - from experience you need to add it just before serving for it to retain its milky/creamy texture and flavour.

Mamiamamia · 25/03/2023 17:33

Also I would add some soy sauce, crushed garlic and chilli to the crockpot.

loobylou10 · 25/03/2023 17:46

@Garman Missed that - apologies.

coodawoodashooda · 25/03/2023 19:36

Thanks everyone. It was not great. Serves me right for being lazy.
