Why would she say this?

Not really aibu but why?
I'm white, eastern European, and Dp is white Welsh. We live in a Welsh town. New tenant white Welsh has moved in, and abused me with xenophobic language. She was reported to the police for a hate incident - they earned her. She is now hopefully moving.
I overheard her talking to a neighbour saying she was happy to move away from "the black house next door" . Our house is a cream terraced house, red wall, white windowframes - no black anywhere. The only term "black house " dp could think of was the old historic highland cottage type.
I then heard her referring to me as "that black woman" several times. See above, I am not and could not be described as black. I don't wear much black, my hair is blonde.

I do not consider being called "black" as a term of abuse. The Carribbean women I work with are admirable, strong, resilient a great friends. In fact I would be proud to be likened to them. This soon to be ex neighbour does not know this.
My question is - why is she calling me black?
I would understand if she called me a rude name but I don't believe being called "black" is an insult.

Either she said something else that sounded like black, and you misheard her? Or she's just a total weirdo. Or both.

In the area that I live the term ‘black’ in this context means dirty likened to the blackened faces of those who worked in coal mines and does not refer to a person’s skin colour. Hope this makes sense

I am so sorry she called you this. How horrible and insensitive am I?! It is still abuse and should be reported to police whether it be racial or otherwise (I thought I had written that at the start)

AspiringMermaid · 25/03/2023 08:43

Could she be referring to your other neighbours? Either way what a twat

CreeperBoom · 25/03/2023 08:57

Yes, sorry, the way I would have interpreted that is black = dirty. Sounds like you are well rid.

Ktime · 25/03/2023 09:00

She is clearly a racist cunt and thinks she is clever using racist language to anyone she thinks is foreign.

Is she moving herself or being made to move?

She was reported to the police for a hate incident - they earned her

What does earned her mean?

I don’t know anything about Welsh idioms, but I know that as an Irish person living in rural England (after many years living happily in London), I frequently realised that for a certain kind of ignorant white xenophobe (most often men in their 60s), I was ‘not quite white’, and fell under the same mental category as ‘dirty Asians’ for them.

Is it possible that for this deeply unpleasant creature, you’re categorised as ‘black’ because you’re an immigrant (despite being white)?

Hellocatshome · 25/03/2023 09:22

I would think black in this context means dirty. Like if you say someone gave you a black look.

SeekChase · 25/03/2023 09:31

Keep a diary of the racism please and when you habe gathered enough, report her. Don't let her get away with it.

cerealchops · 25/03/2023 09:38

I’m sorry this is happening OP. I agree it sounds like she’s being racist, which is unacceptable and totally reportable

Thank you, yes I will. It's on the Ring doorbell camera and sound too.

Because she is a fruitcase?
Just ignore her op and be thankful you are not as stupid as her.

BloomForever · 25/03/2023 22:28

What a vile woman! I hope she moves soon. Could it be your accent that She's now considering "black", even though you arent?

Keep recording everything and please, don't let this twat dampen your days, as easy as it is to say as an outsider. What kind of nutcase does this?

NalafromtheLionKing · 25/03/2023 22:38

Very odd considering that black is a skin colour (fact) and not an insult. Like PPs said, perhaps she is just nutty and has a very limited xenophobic vocabulary.
