To ask for kitchen knife recommendation

youbitchesaretwats · 25/03/2023 06:38

All my knives are rubbish, all need throwing.

We're having a new kitchen out in and I want some really decent knives.

Any recommendations?

Depends on your budget. Global knives are good, feel balanced in your hand but they're pricey.
Sabatier are also very good. You can usually get a good variety in TKMaxx at sensible prices.

FrenchBoule · 25/03/2023 08:26

I have Victorinox with rosewood handles- chef’s knife, santoku and paring knife and a couple of Victorinoxxwith nylon handles(paring and tomato).

Years ago while looking for decent knives I tried Global in the shop. The knives are fantastic but they didn’t feel “right” in my hand.

Misread*

I thing nice to say because I lightheaded my said the rose gold trend has gone too far. Give me a break, babe.

I'm not your fucking babe, Rose gold has fuck all to do with it, the reviews were good, I bought them from Harts of Stur, after they fell apart I found the reviews on Amazon.

I’m feeling helpful so I researched using my Which? membership for you.

The best three kitchen utility knives according to Which? are:

  1. John Lewis Professional Utility Knife £30
  2. Mercer Culinary Utility Knife £12.06
  3. Robert Welch Signature Flexible Utility Knife £56

Try those depending on your budget and then get a bread knife and a paring knife, plus a carving knife if you eat meat. All essential bases covered.

Sabatier. Some of ours are forty years old and still as good as new. They are riveted through the handle so never get the wobbles.

I like a knife block, a very safe and convenient way to store the knives which we use most often.

Mmy main advice would be to try to choose knives in real life rather than online. A good knife ‘fits your hand’ and you can’t tell that from a picture.

I treated myself to a set of three Wusthoff knives - one chef, one filleting and one paring. They are beautifully balanced and rarely need sharpening. They weren't cheap, but I won't ever need to buy another one.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/03/2023 11:55

also think Victorinox are brilliant - I have a full knife block of Sabatier knives, but 99% of the time use a set of three paring knives from John Lewis - they're brilliant, and I've had them for years - maybe not showy for the new kitchen, but excellent.

The top one is the one that it's tip broke off. The other is the one I use for everything apart from the bread as it doesn't cut bread well

All I can say is don't buy these! Black coating peels off after a few washes, the blade snapped on the second smallest, I emailed hoping for a refund and they sent a second damn set out!
Waiting for recommendations too 😆

Haha, I've got those too. It's exactly as you describe. I only use one from the set (the smallest one. Looked good when it was new but that's about it.

Thanks @toastofthetown I actually appreciated the ‘lecture’!

Same! I took notes 🤣

Cyclewidow46 · 25/03/2023 12:37

Had my Global knives and block for nearly 16 years. Definitely worth the money.

Zanatdy · 25/03/2023 12:39

Got these last week, they are amazing

I invested in some Global knives last year and they are amazing. Never realised how crap my old ones were until I started using these.

Turquoisa80 · 25/03/2023 12:42

I use a tomato knife, it's serrated at the edge. Similar to tthis knife. I use it for everything and have several. I bought mine from an indian shop that sells kitchenware

GCAcademic · 25/03/2023 12:43

I also found @toastofthetown ’s post useful. The OP was bloody rude and could have just followed her own advice to “scroll on by” without typing out such a catty response.

TeeBee · 25/03/2023 12:44

We've got the Japanese Global range. They are very good. I send mine off for sharpening.

PerfectYear321 · 25/03/2023 12:46

Just seen the price of Global knives. I should hope they're good 😂

Wherearemymarbles · 25/03/2023 12:49

we have wusthof.
but whatever you get you need a decent sharpner which is used regularly
we have a chefs choice electric and blade as proper razor sharp.
if you buy global get one for asian blades

TuesdayJulyNever · 25/03/2023 12:53

I was given one of these as a wedding present. Lovely balance and very easy to look after.

I’m far too cheap and poor to buy the rest of the set. Sadly it was a friend of dh who gave it, or I’d use it to bump him off and get married again in the hopes of a repeat.

I swear by kitchen devils and I always put them in the dishwasher. Kitchen devils sell a sharpener too

I have a few Kitchen Devils and for their price, ie cheap, I find them very good. I also have an enormous Victorinox knife which I was given years ago by a chef friend, scares the daylights out of me!

The name Sabatier seems to be used for a wide range of knives, some not a patch on the Sabatier of years ago. Then they were something to be aspired to, now many are fairly low priced.

Itstarts · 25/03/2023 13:01

My best knives were actually a set of Joe Wicks knives I bought cheaply off amazon.

Avoid viners.

What lecture? Other than the first line, all was directly relevant to your question, and then I added some info on how to maintain the blade so your new knife lasts as long as possible…

it was a good post imo
