Law of attraction

Mooshamoo · 24/03/2023 19:27

I was just reading the books, "manifest" and "Ask and it is given" about using the law of attraction to get what you want in life.

Basically ,it says what we think about, we create.

And it suggests using vision boards, and journals and drawings etc to create things. For example writing out what you want to happen

Has anyone done it and had any success stories? I'd love to hear about them.

It's a pile of wank and really dangerous if you have mental health issues such as OCD.

Nextlevelnonsense · 24/03/2023 21:58

Dr Joe Dispenza explains the science behind this.
It's not as simple as some books imply.
It's also not 'a load of bollocks'.

If you're willing to engage in some lifestyle changes, it can be very rewarding.

Mooshamoo · 24/03/2023 22:01

I was just thinking of some of the celebrities who said that they use the law of attraction. I remember conor McGregor (the MMA fighter) said that when he was unemployed and broke, he kept visualising himself being a world known successful fighter, worth millions. He did become that.

@Whywere

I don’t perceive it to be toxic. You may though. It’s only toxic when someone else tries to force it upon you.

Chilloutsnow · 24/03/2023 22:22

@Mooshamoo

Marnie who won the Apprentice was quite clearly visionary. You only had to watch how she created her gym in an instant on the meta verse.

thecatsthecats · 24/03/2023 22:34

I don't know enough about the whole theory to comment, but isn't there even scientific proof that thinking about exercising raises your calorie consumption? And that people who have visualised, for example, how they'd escape from a fire are more likely to escape in an emergency?

I use some brain and memory exercises to programme my brain into following actions - usually in another room or first thing in the morning. I think it's an exaggerated form of that.

lordStrange · 24/03/2023 22:35

I've used some form of loa my entire life actually. I was brought up in a chaotic poor household with dreadful messages from my parent and siblings of what I might be able to achieve.

I don't think it's bollocks.

It's a method of gaining clarity and hope. It does, I will admit, feel a bit like magic when your thoughts become reality.

It's always about hard work. But it's a step by step process from being utterly lost to gaining momentum and reaching your goal/s.

Laptopneeded · 24/03/2023 22:39

I think Robert graves describes his wife doing this. They were looking for a house and she uncannily described or drew one and it they found one identical.

It's just focusing thoughts.

The mind is definitely untapped power.

Laptopneeded · 24/03/2023 22:43

@lordStrange

I agree.

It's about being positive and thinking hard about speficic positive things you want to happen.

In a basic example I loose something. I can't find it. I use a first approach like re tracing steps. Then a general quick look. Then systematic room by room area by area.
. If no joy I let go.

Then most times something will happen that makes me move in a different way eg I drop something and as I go to pick it up I find it.
Or someone bumps into me and falling sideways means i see the strangely hidden item.

That exact thing happened again yesterday.

It's very peculiar.

BeeBB · 24/03/2023 22:43

A well known nasty school mum from DS’s primary year class started quoting from this after signing up getting conned into a pyramid beauty/skincare brand business thing.

She did seem to have outwardly changed but this lasted for a very brief period.

She started sharing quotes on FB something about surrounding yourself with positive people etc and she then started befriending, crawling and being OTT to those school mums she admired/envied etc.

The funniest thing was when she shared a quote with something about surrounding yourself with positive people and not speaking or thinking any negative thoughts. This lasted nearly a week before she retorted to her usual angry/grumpy/nasty FB posts again. She could be quite a bitter angry person.

She no longer mentions the skincare/beauty company and no longer shares the quotes on FB.

Charles11 · 24/03/2023 22:50

Try it.
It can work as long as you start taking steps towards what you're aiming for.
It's not magic and you won't get what you want by just imagining it but if you start putting some practical things in place and taking action, then it's likely to get you there.

raspberryjuiceandpompoms · 24/03/2023 22:54

I agree that MN is not the right place for these discussions.
law of attraction on its own is not about visualising but about ‘feeling’ or ‘being’ of certain vibration as like is attracted to like …and taking inspired actions. It’s actually rooted in psychology quite a bit and has nothing to do with ‘toxic positivity’. There’s a lot to it that just meets the eye (there are other laws at play) and daydreaming about being rich and having the most perfect relationship it’s most certainly not.
To me it all starts with gratitude. Have I ever manifested anything? Yes. Jobs, cars, our house etc.

Forfrigz · 24/03/2023 23:01

I think there is some merit to it but it's nothing mystical it's merely tuning your brain into working for what you want. By focusing on what you want and being more open to the idea of it being possible, you're more likely to work towards it and more likely to achieve whatever it is. But it's not the magic some people think it is. Similarly, the opposite isn't true and you don't go through bad things simply for what you're thinking, but in the same way they might seem worse than they arenor get worse than they would be if you adopt a catastrophizing mindset.

Yes !! I do this all the time 😀

Bottlesofhot · 24/03/2023 19:52

I think it can be very toxic actually, and essentially blames victims of crime for attracting awful situations etc... It also seems to be lots of the people who write these books are incredibly privileged.

Not so.

Listen to anything by Louise Hay.

When you're ready Abraham Hicks.

After that Seth Speaks.

You're welcome.

Cherryana · 24/03/2023 23:14

I think that intention is powerful and manifesting is another name for making your intention clear.

So I wanted a mini countryman and I got one. Was it manifestation or just plain want and work ( to pay for it)? It was quite specific what I wanted and I got it.

I also wrote down what type of husband I wanted (funny and handsome) and I got him but he also farts and snores and that wasn’t on the list!!

NewNameNigel · 24/03/2023 23:29

@CheshGirl if you intend to spend any money on abraham hicks I suggest you look up the get rich quick snakes that Jerry (Esther's late husband) was involved with before he got Esther to "channel" Abraham.

Listening for free is one thing if you get something out of it but please don't be tempted to part with any if your hard earned cash.

topofbighill · 24/03/2023 23:29

My colleague had a Peter Andre vision board for years. She's still single.

typopro · 24/03/2023 23:43

If anyone wants to come on and say it's a pile of shit, please don't, it's been said once already now. It doesn't contribute in any way.

This is the AIBU board. If you want everyone to agree with you you should have posted o chat or something instead.

Yes. YABU. I thought all that LOA bollocks was linked to the MLM bollocks?

Either way, if you want something, put the wheels in motion to achieve it, work hard and put the effort in.

Grapewrath · 25/03/2023 06:33

Thoughts become things imo. There’s a lot of research into mindset and the power of this. I also believe in a spiritual energy that guides me.
The LOA has become a massive money spinner though, but those of us who have been following the methods in a more spiritual way have been doing it years before The Secret.
I have some very specific manifestations- I won’t share on here as they’re too outing.

Mummadeze · 25/03/2023 06:43

I will get shot down if I go into details, but it has absolutely worked for me and I highly recommend that you try it if you are curious. My life was very difficult at one point and a Mum I met at a baby class lent me a copy of the Secret. I followed the first exercise and it worked. The book said I would be shocked, and I was. Following that, I started talking to the universe regularly. Showing gratitude but asking for specific things to help shape my life to how I wanted it. Every single one of these things have fallen into my lap. I can’t explain it, but it has worked. I don’t think you can ask for miracles or things to do with health, but when it comes to money, jobs, possessions that you need, you can attract these things to you by positive thinking and belief.

AnotherCountryMummy · 25/03/2023 07:00

I'm going out on a limb here and I know so many people have shot it down.

But... it's worked for me! I manifested my home on a very specific road where houses are never for sale. I manifested a lump sum to buy it. And I've manifested lots of very specific things to just "appear". Seriously. I concentrated so hard on something for about a week and then it appeared on the end of somebody's drive, brand new and free to a good home. I manifest small things too, like car parking spaces in the best spots when it's super busy.

I think basically it's a mindset thing. I know it sounds so woo, but you actually have to believe it to work. It doesn't work for people who go half in on it.

I'm preparing to be crucified 🤣

playgroundwarrior · 25/03/2023 07:05

I did it a lot around ten years ago and it worked for me. It's quite outing so I won't to go into too much detail. One of the things I 'manifested' was a job and living situation that was surprising to everyone. Not miraculous by any means but fairly out of the ordinary.

I think it's a great thing to do but I wouldn't say I'm convinced LOA exists. For me, I suspect it was about being positive, setting clear goals, imagining outcomes in a vivid/exciting way. I'm a v goal focused personality so that worked well. 'Thoughts become things' instinctively makes sense for me too. I don't imagine for a minute that it can protect from illness and such though and I was starting from a place of privilege with good education/health etc

I didn't like the Secret as it was too focused on money and manifesting material things to be interesting to me. I loved Jack Canfield (the chicken soup fellow you mentioned) and found him inspirational even though he can be a bit money focused in places. He's also quite cheesy Californian so depends on your tolerance for that kind of thing!

Skethylita · 25/03/2023 07:06

LOA is not wishing for something and then, poof, it happens. That never works.

What does work is having a very clear and specific mental image of what you want and then figuring out the steps to get there, as well as taking the opportunities that bring you closer to your goals.

Constantly bringing your goals to the forefront of your mind (by "asking the universe for it") and starting to act in a way that complies with your goals will help with that.

Notarealmum · 25/03/2023 07:17

Just sounds like good old fashioned positive thinking to me.
