AIBU to block in school mums parking on my driveway?

Applepiesmum · 23/03/2023 10:49

i live down the road from a school and during the school rush parents park everywhere it normally worse in the afternoon at 3pm

I work from home and usually park in the visitor pay outside my house so my partner can park on the driveway he gets home 3.30-4pm

however recently people have been parking on my driveway last week I caught someone pulling in knocked on their window and they argued with me saying they need to pick up their child eventually they did move but moved to where they were just half way blocking my drive way and halfway blocking my neighbor so no one could access it!

I didn’t bother confront them again but in future I’m just thinking to block them in… is that too petty

I have reported it to the school but all they’ve said is they’ve already asked parents not to block residents in so I’m not sure what else to do.

(if I did block anyone in it would only be for 30 minutes to cause a bit of stress and a lesson learned)

Do be careful not to leave any planks with long nails sticking out, lying around on your drive.

BrimFullOfAsher · 23/03/2023 20:04

I think we need a diagram, including the 'visitor space(s)'?

If they are solely for the visitors of yours (and neighbours) properties, then is that o e per house? Are they actually assigned?

I don't think there should be any excuse for parking on someone else's drive btw.

MissMarplesbag · 23/03/2023 20:05

Report the car as an abandoned vehicle to the council.

Speedweed · 23/03/2023 20:08

Could you get a private parking firm to tow? You'd probably need to put up a sign first, but if it's your land you're perfectly entitled to get illegally parked vehicles towed.

Although it's probably easier to park on the road blocking your drive AND taking up a space the selfish fuckers could have used.

@adriftinadenofvipers

A chip or a different perspective- I have been forced to set up my life, my career, my family, my home to function without a car.

I'm proof that's its perfectly doable.

I'm sorry that you've had to do that but berating other posters who haven't isn't helpful.

I have a sibling who doesn't drive due to medical issues, never has done, but totally different circumstances to me for example.

Cocofuntime · 23/03/2023 20:15

On your drive is ridiculous, I’d never do that but I do park across drives to pick up kids, the pavement isn’t owned by you and police couldn’t care less before I hear all the ‘it’s illegal’ rubbish. Live near a school suffer the consequences

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/03/2023 20:17

Blocking someone’s car on their drive is actually against the law, though, @Cocofuntime - as well as being very inconsiderate and selfish.

Yes I agree. We all have our own set of circumstances and challenges

The fact that a parent might have an appointment that they can’t get to isn’t the concern of OP. There is never an excuse for parking illegally. If you think you’ll have a hard time parking, leave home earlier to be able to find a spot and walk back or get someone to drop you off.

That’s pretty selfish. Do you block people from getting off their own driveway

The police actually couldn’t care less about such trivial matters & have told residents to call operation crackdown rather than bother them, unless the vehicle is abandoned for more than 30 days they don’t care thank god so I will continue to park where I like cheers

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 23/03/2023 20:21

What if the person whose driveway you are blocking needs to get in or out of their driveway for their own reasons? Have kids in school? Suffer your own consequences. What does your need to do something have to do with the OP?

Why are people so scared of the rain?

We live in a temperate climate for crying out loud.

My favourite weather is rain... my child's school is a 5 minute walk ... for a healthy able bodied person, I am not one of those people, so I drive... and i face criticism for driving short distances, but I was provided with a mobility vehicle, it provides independence and an ability to be able to get my child to and from school (I don't park across drives, I have a blue badge so park in the allocated parking, but when it expired I was one of those mums who left 40 minutes early to sit outside the school (engine off) to wait to collect, as otherwise I would have had quite a walk from wherever I could have found a space, which defeats the purpose and reason For driving. Thankfully new badge arrived soon after.

it's great for you that your life is working out well for you and the environment, please enjoy the view from the pedestal you have placed yourself upon...

I’m there 5 mins if that, honestly it’s no drama I’m not on their driveway. Again they don’t own the road or the pavement in-front of their home

wow, so entitled. How do you know it’s no dramas?

justasmalltownmum · 23/03/2023 20:30

Can you call traffic wardens to patrol the area?
Or get one of those bollard things that you can put up and down. I'm not sure what they are called, but they are metal and cemented into your driveway. They fold down.

Traffic wardens don't police driveways

OP doesn't need a bollard. She can just park on her drive and solve the problem.

Oh, you're more important than other people. Well you should have said. I judge myself as more important than you, so I'll take your handbag and your car. All fine because that's what I want and it's only for as long as I want.

Offensiveapprently · 23/03/2023 20:35

Just put a massive chain lock on the gate and charge them for removal?

Casperroonie · 23/03/2023 20:37

Genius!!!

MyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 23/03/2023 20:39

And you don’t own the driveway that you would be parking across. I’m sure that if complete strangers started parking across your driveway on a regular basis that you would find that irritating. 5 minutes for you, 5 minutes for the next person and so on. And, then again at the end of the day when there is school pick up.

LightDrizzle · 23/03/2023 20:44

YANBU!

I once had a bad experience with a piquant twist. My DD2 has severe cognitive and physical disabilities. When she was younger she adored those hideous soft play barns. Our garage was at the bottom of our garden and we went in via a door facing the garden but the automatic garage door opened onto a 10ft that ran the length of the street.
Having told her we were going to soft play she was so exited, I loaded her and her wheelchair into the car, pressed the fob… but the garage door stopped because a car had parked alongside our clearly marked for no parking garage. There was nothing I could do. I had to unload DD2 who was distraught and had a meltdown.
Later, once she’d calmed down I wheeled her round to see if the car was there and as it was, I wrote a note saying that thanks to the person parking there, my disabled daughter hadn’t been able to go to soft play and was devastated.

Hours later, after dark, the doorbell rang and woman was there and she said she was sorry she’d blocked my garage but did I think my reaction was reasonable. I said it was perfectly reasonable, she had devastated my daughter and ruined our Saturday, she then said that letting tyres down was criminal damage. I said I hadn’t let her tyres down! I hadn’t. She said “Did you write this?” - It was the note I’d written but someone had added, in a different pen and with different writing “CUNT!!!” 🤣
I assume the same person took it upon themselves to also let down her tyres having read the note I’d left under her wipers.

I’d never do something that unhinged but I can’t say I was unhappy that some randomer did.

Such entitlement

Sprinkle a good handful or two of big nails down point upwards. Obvs collect them before your partner returns.
