i live down the road from a school and during the school rush parents park everywhere it normally worse in the afternoon at 3pm

I work from home and usually park in the visitor pay outside my house so my partner can park on the driveway he gets home 3.30-4pm

however recently people have been parking on my driveway last week I caught someone pulling in knocked on their window and they argued with me saying they need to pick up their child eventually they did move but moved to where they were just half way blocking my drive way and halfway blocking my neighbor so no one could access it!

I didn’t bother confront them again but in future I’m just thinking to block them in… is that too petty

I have reported it to the school but all they’ve said is they’ve already asked parents not to block residents in so I’m not sure what else to do.

(if I did block anyone in it would only be for 30 minutes to cause a bit of stress and a lesson learned)

Why are people so scared of the rain?

We live in a temperate climate for crying out loud.

@Itsneverwhatitseems in that case depending on the age of her kids I'd expect her to get free transport for the kids to get to school if it's further than 2 miles. Has she looked into it?

Free transport only available for families on certain benefits.
She isnt

I think we should all go and live with QuertyGirl and work fewer hours. Because the economy really needs the entire population to all reduce their hours.

This ^! And it would help stick up two fingers at the government for thinking that retired people are actually going to return to work!!

I will never, ever understand why people buy a house beside a school and then complain about parking..... I wouldn't even look at a house in that kind of location.

Of course people shouldn't park on your drive - but why is it an issue for your DH, as he apparently gets home at 3.30/4, by which time the vast majority of the school traffic will have gone anyway?

I wouldn't recommend blocking anyone in either. You've no idea what kind of loon you might be triggering!

We extended our drive when we bought our house so that one car could park in front of the house and the other at the side of it in the drive to avoid the car hokey cokey, if that would be an option?

mummyh2016 · 23/03/2023 18:52

@Itsneverwhatitseems I'm not pretending I know that much about it but a search on Google tells me benefits don't come into it if they qualify under the distance/age or safe walking route or SEND.

Sorry, but can you just clarify... would you not have to move your car from the visitor space you are reserving, in order to block them in?

surely, if that is the case it would just miss out a whole lot of drama to just park on your own drive in the first place?

(it is of course wrong for them to park on your drive, but I was just confused as to why you would sacrifice the visitor space to block them in?)

CornishTiger · 23/03/2023 18:55

Not read the full thread for once. Has any suggested penguin bollards ( see classics) 🐧are your solution

CornishTiger · 23/03/2023 18:57

Or go all out pass your HGV licence buy a lorry, block them, have some wine. Never will it happen again!

riotlady · 23/03/2023 19:00

This was a massive problem at our local school, the school sent round endless notes that got ignored so eventually they managed to get the local police involved who sent out a very stern letter and came and patrolled a couple of pickups and now it seems to have improved a bit.

Shamsterdam · 23/03/2023 19:01

Does your council have a page you can report it on? Sorry not sure what category this would be. I live near my kids school and parents are awful at either blocking local driveways or just stopping in the middle of the road causing chaos. One of the neighbours told me they'd reported it online., ages ago. The school also said they have done this. Now every couple of weeks we see a tiny little council CCTV car parking up at school run times. The school has also sent out regular texts and letters about considerate, legal parking, and says it refers complaints on to the council so keep on complaining to both school and council OP.

On offering a place. I don’t live in Watford btw but I have heard this from cousin for the past 5 years constantly! and I know some of my old school friends ( home town) have had the same trouble.

Too many kids, not enough places.
many kids don’t even get to go to the same school as their sibling.

You are offered free transport if youre eligible.
If you’re not offered, you’re not deemed eligible but you can put in a separate request. She has, they’ve always been refused. They ask her to provide evidence of any benefits,

Parents criss crossing in their cars all over the place.
Masses of new housing

Ahhhh... that explains the chip...

Fedupwitheveryone · 23/03/2023 19:06

I would absolutely block them in. Almost wishing I lived near a school street so that I could do this and enjoy doing it.

Park them in, walk to local shop to buy milk/paper, saunter slowly back and act innocent but matter of fact when they are there waiting on your return. Smile smugly, move your car. You just want to inconvenience and embarrass them - extra points if they are in sight of other parents who will understand what has happened.

(nb nobody is going to involve the police on this. Why is MN so quick to quote legalities in things like this? is it just to sound knowledgable?)

purpledalmation · 23/03/2023 19:10

Residents in the crescent I live in (school at the start of the crescent) have complained and now a section of the road is pedestrian and cyclists only with residents only parking (permit). Trouble is they now park at the top of the crescent(where I live) which is not permit holders only. Worth asking your local authority to stop parents parking there even it it means moving the problem further away

QuertyGirl · 23/03/2023 19:15

@adriftinadenofvipers

A chip or a different perspective- I have been forced to set up my life, my career, my family, my home to function without a car.

I'm proof that's its perfectly doable.

ScandiNoirNuit · 23/03/2023 19:23

Can’t believe people actually have the brass neck to park in someone’s driveway! I must admit I have sometimes been less considerate than I could have been of parking near driveways in school pickup from time to time ( ie not blocking it, but not making it as easy as it should be to access your own drive), but certainly not actually parking in it!

guestusername · 23/03/2023 19:29

I’ve had school run cars park on my drive twice. First time I just parked across it and went to the shop, walking back the long way round. Second time I had words with the bloke who claimed he was “just turning round” but he was too far onto the drive to be doing that and he was getting out of the car when I spotted him out the window. Both times, I’m the one who gets abuse.

I put a Ring camera up and it hasn’t happened since. It still gets parked across twice a day but there’s nowt I can do about it now, I just try and avoid needing use of my drive during the school run 🤷‍♀️

Badbudgeter · 23/03/2023 19:31

My friend blocked off the drive with a length of chain and a padlock. You could always fasten it behind cf.

abs12 · 23/03/2023 19:34

Block them in. Do it. Then take pleasure in their discomfort as they awkwardly knock on your door and grovel until you decide you want to move your car... No aggression needed.

Comeonbarbiebrianharvey · 23/03/2023 19:47

I'd just stick a poster somewhere on the drive, "if you park here... I will block you in!"

TolkiensFallow · 23/03/2023 19:47

Block them in - they’re trespassing anyway

pettysquabbles · 23/03/2023 19:49

girlfriend44 · 23/03/2023 10:53

People move bollards. The official way to go is the best and calmest.

Do they bring a JCB with them to move the bollards?

nuttynet · 23/03/2023 19:50

It's incredibly annoying and if they block your car in, that's selfish

However, unless they're inconveniencing you, i wouldn't get worked up

Presumably they're gone within 20'mins

Luluissleeping · 23/03/2023 19:54

We have cars reverse onto our drive during the school run, as well as other vehicles reversing, all wanting to turn round. We now have a pothole the size of a small pond that is due to our drive and the space adjacent and the road itself disintegrating and getting filled with rain. We are going to build a small fence over part of it.

I love the rain!

however I drive to collect my child due to time constraints between finishing work and school pick up, until we’ve learned how to teleport or apparate, I will still be needing to drive to school

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/03/2023 20:04

I cannot believe the number of people who thinks it's smart or clever to put nails in place to puncture tyres .
This is gross vandalism and especially as there is a certainty that these cars are carrying innocent children.

If there was an accident caused by the deliberate puncture of a tyre how the fuck do you justify it ?
And don;t give me the Well they shouldn;t have parked there yada yada .
