Hiding from window cleaner - lighthearted!

Just a lighthearted thread for a bit of a giggle!

Does anyone else hide from the window cleaner? I am in my mid thirties and a fully functioning normal (!) adult. I am currently on mat leave so at home most of the time when they come.

Today I sat on the stairs with my daughter so they couldn't see me. I don't know why I just find it so awkward 😂😩

Does anyone else hide away or do you sit there and happily make eye contact as they squeegee your windows?

We had just moved into our first house, hadn’t got curtains up yet, boiling hot, lying starkers under a sheet, hanging so bad. I heard the rattle of the ladder. Somehow I lay there motionless until he’d covered the window in water, then kind of slid off the far side of the bed into the floor and hid.So no, I never ever looked him in the eye again.

Mochudubh · 22/03/2023 16:00

A while back I was in the bath when I heard the ladder going up against the wall. Even though the glass is frosted, the window was open a bit and I didn't fancy him seeing me wallowing like a pink hippo. I jumped out of the bath and made a break for the bedroom (curtains were closed), turned to shut the bedroom door and saw him cleaning the window of the spare room opposite and must have seen me literally streaking across the landing.

To give him his due, when he came round for his money, he made a point of saying he hadn't knocked for the money when he did the windows as he thought I was out earlier (even my car was in the drive), I took that as his way of saying don't worry about it.

To be fair, they must see some weird stuff when they're cleaning windows. (Plays Ukulele).

nowaworriedmum · 22/03/2023 16:00

@desertcalippo I also hardly ever answer the door. If someone's coming to the house, I'll know. If I don't they will ring my phone.

If it's the postman I can see his coat through the front door frosted glass, a courier? I'll see the van.

Everyone else doesn't get a cat in hell's chance, and I go into full ninja mode so they don't see or hear me! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

topofbighill · 22/03/2023 16:02

I would hide but I follow them around (strategically) because some windows get missed (some of my house goes over the top of next door and they think that bit of the house doesn't belong to me)

KimberleyClark · 22/03/2023 16:03

DH and I were in bed once when the window cleaner arrived. Fortunately the curtains were closed.

NHStyptypey · 22/03/2023 16:04

I hide from the window cleaner. I live in a bungalow, so I hide in the hallway until she's gone 😂

topofbighill · 22/03/2023 16:05

Also, my Dad was a window cleaner for 45 years. Some of his good friends were customers, and the effort some of them went to to contact me when he died was overwhelming. But, he was an awesome man. I have tried chatting to them, there's 3/4 of them that come together but their boss is miserable and they look like they don't want to chat when the boss is around.

Babdoc · 22/03/2023 16:05

If I’m up, I pop out for a chat while he’s cleaning, but he often turns up while I’m in the bath, so I just stay there. He can’t reach that bathroom’s window anyway, so won’t see me.

RobertsRadio · 22/03/2023 16:07

If I'm obviously busy and doing something virtuous, like hoovering, then I don't feel the need to hide, but if I'm just lazing on the sofa watching tv then I immediately turn off the tv the minute I see him pull up outside and either start doing some housework or just hide. Like @Shamsterdam I feel really lazy if I'm just slobbing on the sofa while someone is hard at work washing my windows.

The worst time was when the window cleaner turned up when I was off sick and in bed. I suddenly heard the ladder up against my bedroom window, right by my bed and him climbing up, I had no time to get out of bed so I just pulled the covers over my head and played dead, god knows what he thought.

FruityLittleDrink · 22/03/2023 16:09

It's the law isn't it, to hide?

I do! I actually posted about this on another thread recently and was told I had “serious issues”🤣

No, I just find him overfamiliar and a bit pervy and also he always asks for a cuppa which annoys me - so if I can, I hide (by drawing the bedroom curtains and sitting in there til he’s gone)!

desertcalippo · 22/03/2023 16:23

@RobertsRadio played dead 😂😂😂

I thought I was strange by shutting the downstairs curtains and blinds when I used to have a window cleaner, but it seems I am not alone

It should be law..it's awkward AF 🤣

Mimilamore · 22/03/2023 17:18

You don't hide from paying him as well do you, remember this is their livelihood and they really are more concerned with not having to return several times for payment than a glimpse of you .. naked or otherwise...

Why on earth would you think that?

desertcalippo · 22/03/2023 17:38

@Mimilamore for gods sake, I pay straight away thank you - as the title suggests just a bit of lightheartedness! 🙄

redspottedmug · 22/03/2023 17:40

When I first got together with now-DH, we were in bed on Saturday morning. A ladder appeared at the window, so I dived under the covers. Then DH and his window cleaner mate proceeded to have a good long chat about the football, while I tried to stealthily blend in with the duvet Blush

😂 fgs. get a sense of humour.

BessieSurtees · 22/03/2023 18:20

My window cleaner uses a pole and is paid by bank transfer so I don’t even know what he looks like. Even if I’m in he never knocks just puts a note through the door. DH set up the arrangement.

Riapia · 22/03/2023 18:48

Mine texts me 1/2 before he gets here.
I have time to close the curtains.

Nosey fuckers window cleaners.
Well known for it.
