Does anyone know much about this emergency warning thing on our phones. Can't remember the exact day but in April they're going to test it out. Is it fear mongering again. I'm going to switch it off, anyone else.

I'm really curious about it. I listened to a recording of the sound.

So it's Sunday evening - I suppose everyone's will come through at different times?

Only thing I'm unsure about is I think it's only on certain phone models? My mother has a basic tesco mobile, I'll have to travel to hers that day just in case it goes off. No matter how many times I tell her she won't remember and start screaming.

It's a bit of a nuisance as I don't like travelling back late so hope it's around teatime.

It is to generate fear - people at risk of flooding etc already have a similar system and i accept in some countries warnings about earthquakes etc is extremely useful but I'm in the UK and I'm afraid i do not think i am at risk of anything serious enough to warrant being scared when it goes off several times a year for every minor thing.

Elvis1956 · 22/03/2023 08:47

I love the fact that people think we live in a country without any natural disasters....flood warnings are important and necessary for people living along the Severn for example.
Warnings about things like the beast from the East would have stopped many idiots driving putting others at risk to save them

Because the UK is some kind of paradise where nothing bad can ever and will ever happen….

The UK is definitely not a paradise but In terms of risk from natural disasters we are one of the safest countries in the world.

Those area at risk of flooding already know and have warnings - what else are we at risk from?

Erm.. Russia and it's arsenal of nuclear bombs?

CaroleSinger · 22/03/2023 09:00

Oh and their friendship with China too!

The current flood warning alert systems in the UK require the public to register to receive the alerts - at least here in East Anglia. Visitors to the area wouldn't receive the alerts. The flood sirens were decommissioned years ago.

WTF!!!

We are not going to be attacked by Russia out of the blue - there would be lots of stages before it happened - increased tensions etc etc. The war in Ukraine is nowhere near enough to start a nuclear war.

hamstersarse · 22/03/2023 09:04

That is totally what is going to happen - increasing frequency of messages as the power settles in and we revert to the lowest common denominator of people who see everything as a risk

Bubblesoffun · 22/03/2023 01:19

It’s hardly the end of the world as you know it. Have got them from the police. On hot days, severe weather warnings. Some on here seem to have a pretty narrow view of the world.

I guess it's because some are at a more direct risk from Russian aggression than others to be fair.

704703hey · 22/03/2023 09:05

If anything such as a child went missing in the area I'd be more alert when out.

I think they said this could be one of the reasons?

Though yes it'll be mainly the weather!

Well yes, and then after we have gone through all those stages we then get a nice alert on our phones to tell us we're all about to die 😃

Omg i can see the fear mongering has worked already i cannot believe what i am reading - are people really that scared???

Taytotots · 22/03/2023 09:10

We have these (Canada). In the past few months I have had warnings about a hurricane (which was well covered in news/weather as well). Also for child abduction alerts (to ask for sightings).

The only thing people on the thread seem to have fear/anxiety about is the concept of receiving a warning.

I don't want them so have opted out. It's about managing my condition so I am not in fear.

I don't think anyone is saying they are scared of them, just that they don't want them. And that's entirely reasonable.

EmmaEmerald · 22/03/2023 09:21

I haven't RTFT

aren't a lot of us irritated and concerned about govt overreach again?

How appropriate it is being held on 23 April which is St George's day 😀...

St George's day is irrelevant in large parts of the U.K.

Why do people on MN think everyone in the U.K. is English?😡

In settings there's a "emergency warning" thing isn't there, which wasn't there till recently. So they have accessed it

They haven't accessed it. Its been added into a software update on your phone*

Can you tell me where it is on an iPhone? I've looked through settings but can't see it. (And my phone has updated with the latest update recently).

Settings, notifications, then scroll to the bottom.

I'm looking forward to it out of curiosity!

I also think it's nice that a lot of the country will receive the test message on April 23rd at the same time.

If it's too mundane I'd opt out, I check the met office website frequently

EmmaEmerald · 22/03/2023 09:32

I'm annoyed it's happening on St George's Day too, but then I'm annoyed about it full stop.

There will be more than a few think St George is English...
