What do you do with old owners post?

Been here for a while and still getting loads of letters for previous owners. I kept hold of them for a while and contacted EA to pass a message on we have their post and they can come and collect or I can forward to new address. No response to this. I even had a parcel again no response so I I have left it. What would you do? DH has opened some without looking st the name thinking it was ours so the opened ones I contacted the numbers on there (companies) and explained people don’t live here. DH thinks I’m stressing too much and it’s their problem not doing a redirection service like we did. I can’t keep letting letters pile up! What shall I do with them?

You write “no longer at this address” on the envelope and put them back in the postbox.

loopyloutoo · 21/03/2023 13:07

Bin - our previous owner was a knob. Needless to say too mean to organise redirection of post also.

This is the definition of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Our previous owner's mum lives round the corner so we drop them off to her, but I realise that's a unique situation.

Most post will have an "of undelivered return to" thing on the back of the envelope, I believe you can just write "no longer at this address" on the envelope and bung it back in the post box and it'll go back to sender.

Or just bin it all 🤷‍♀️

Register to vote from your address if you have not done so already. Might help.

Newhouse1111 · 21/03/2023 13:12

Thank you all. Sorry don’t want to sound thick but do you literally mean I write @no longer at address” and put in post box OR do I need to write the delivery address you find at the back on the front too?

@Ishefuckingkiddingme why?

If they didn't come to collect the gas leak, the illegally fitted stove or the mice they left in the loft, I doubt they'll want their post either.

RedSnail · 21/03/2023 13:13

Obvious junk or no return address I bin

anything important looking I write “not at this address” on the front, scribble out the window with the to address on the front in sharpie and Chuck in postbox

SnowSnow · 21/03/2023 13:14

I would put a line through the address and then write not known at this address and put back in post box.

Because throwing it away means more will keep coming. It means any unpaid debts will result in bailiffs at your door etc. You’re making more work for yourself.

Poepourri · 21/03/2023 13:14

Our previous owner didn't give his new address because he had done so much poor work on the house and failed to tell us about sewage issues.

Mainly i would open the post, read and bin it.

gogohmm · 21/03/2023 13:14

I'm struggling to get companies to move my address, I've just paid for another year of redirection

You cross your address out, then write on front of envelope, no longer at this address, return to sender.
The post office will know the sender's address is on the rear.
Then put it in the nearest post box that you pass.

Sounds familiar 🙄

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 21/03/2023 13:16

Write gone away on the envelope and put a line through your address and put it in a postbox.

Wanttobeyou · 21/03/2023 13:18

Our sellers were knobs.

They left leaks, crap, and lied about stuff.

So I have no issue popping their post in the bin, especially the important looking ones...it's their problem if they're too tight for mail forwarding.

Comefromaway · 21/03/2023 13:19

The previous owner's daughter's garden backs onto our garden so I usually give it to her unless it is obvious junk mail.

MintJulia · 21/03/2023 13:23

"Not known at this address," and put them back in the post.

No it doesn't.

Well it does. If they don’t know the person has moved then that’s where they’d send the enforcement officers. What do you think happens?

You don't need to copy the return address, just cross through your address and put 'not at this address' or similar on the front and pop it in the red box. 😊

illiterato · 21/03/2023 13:37

I had this- didn’t have forwarding address so just wrote “not at this address - return to sender” on everything. After a few months it stopped.

Mizydoscape · 21/03/2023 13:41

Scribble over the address in the window and write "gone away RTS" on the envelope then stick back in the post box if you can be bothered.

getgetgetruby · 21/03/2023 13:44

Been in our place places a long time and still get old post. Initially I wrote 'no longer at this address and reposted' but I just bin it now.
