I was really bloody enjoying it! Didn’t even care the soap was a ‘troll’ 😂 On the same vein…What other things would you like to see reintroduced? To Belgium or anywhere really?! 😉

They're reintroducing beavers somewhere in the south of England I think! Not sure if Belgium have or will follow suit though 🤔

There has been a wild population of beaver in Kent for over 30 years. The population on the River Otter in Devon are also doing well. But yes, less beavers in enclosures and more in the wild.

I'd love to see wild boar wandering the woods on the outskirts of my city just like they do in Berlin.

Would like to see much of Britain's upland returned to nature. Stop all the burning and grouse shooting and reintroduce grazing herds of wild cattle and ponies and yes, wolves.

Bolivia actually once had a Pacific coastline but lost it in a skirmish with Chile in 1879 so maybe old Queen Vic’s request wasn’t so daft.

This is why I love MN. There's batshit stuff about wolves swimming the channel interspersed with properly clever posters who know actual facts like @EtonMessy

The important thing is the know the difference.

Fabulous thread.

I would love it if we had bears.

And raccoons. Lots of raccoons.

They look cute but they are skanky trash pandas.

Trixiefirecracker · 21/03/2023 16:53

I’m really happy about there being Beavers. The more Beavers the better. I have actually just found out there are some near me. Makes me very happy that I might stumble across a wild beaver or two on my wandering. 😉

I liked the ''all animals spend a bit of time underwater'' part.

I don't know why threads like that have to be locked/deleted. It was obvs light-hearted.

OP said she and her husband 'gradually' replaced all the water in a lake with branded bottled water fgs. I mean - it was meant to be a laugh and it was! 😂

I genuinely don't think her threads are meant to be a laugh. I think she's serious (and probably not very well)

Trixiefirecracker · 21/03/2023 16:55

@Ciri you have see are us this before but we don’t really have any proof and I’m pretty sure they are meant to be entertaining. Aside from that the replies were even funnier.

Hmm, I'm not convinced.

I think its the same poster as used to post regarding some bizarre "legal" issues since there are lots of similarities and she PM'd me a few times and clearly wasn't well.

I might be wrong though.

There are also fell ponies near us, essentially’wild’. They are owned I think but just graze on the hills wherever they feel like it. I don’t think they are ridden. Super hardy creatures.

Thank you @MrsTerryPratchett, I saw about it non an episode of QI. They even have a Day Of The Sea in Bolivia ,in fact it’s this Thursday!! They play sounds of the sea on loud speakers !!
Ooh, maybe we could have a Day of the Wolf in the UK as ,like Bolivia’s coastline,UK wolves did once exist !! We could play wolf howls on the loud speakers and celebrate all things wolf ! Although the OP on the original wolf thread might think the Flemish wolves did succeed in their cross river channel swim from landlocked Belgium after all !!

I went to see the beavers in the river Otter in Devon last summer. They were amazing. It really felt like being present at some key moment in history, when you think about how much a thriving beaver population could do to transform our landscape for the better. I read a book recently about how we need to get over ourselves and rely more on certain wild keystone species to restore the natural environment to a better state.

(Was a bit disappointed to learn that there wasn't also a river Beaver nearby, where we could see otters.)

I’m thinking we need more Beavers.

Beavers have been reintroduced in Derbyshire
There's some videos online of them, they are very cute!

Thank you. I didn’t realise but we have them round here in the river Eden! They are very cute.

Sad times, it was an excellent thread. Smiling at the thought of Belgian wolves swimming the channel.

NosnowontheScottishhills · 22/03/2023 07:52

Lynx in Scotland. Apparently lynx favour cautious well camouflaged fast moving deer with super hearing and ability to effortlessly jump your average dyke/fence to the multiple white fluffy balls littering nearly every field and who are unable to escape and are often lame.

NosnowontheScottishhills · 22/03/2023 07:54

We’ve got so many beavers in some areas of Scotland that the government had to issue a culling order.

What are beavers natural predators? We need to introduce those next! Black bears?

Beavers natural predators = wolves?

Wolves and lynx and foxes according to Mr Google. Which doesn’t sound good for the beavers being released in Ealing given the number of foxes in London. That said, not sure whether many London foxes are practised hunters.

interesting read suggesting that where wolves and lynxes are co located, lynxes actively target pregnant wolves and wolf cubs to keep the wolf population down.

Findings on the interference between wolves and lynxes

aReading literature and talking with wolf and lynx researchers, it becomes evident that interference between the two species is actually poorly studied. Some mammalogists tend to assume that wolves…

I'm gutted that thread was closed, I'd just bought a bottle of Evian for my dad to pour into his favourite fishing lake. There's no invasive crayfish there at the moment but it sounds like you can't be too careful.

I was hoping for some more useful tips but I guess I'll just have to watch Countryfile!
