To think the reintroduction of the wild Wolf to Belgium is insanity?

HoppsAndSpice · 20/03/2023 23:50

Wild Wolves have been reintroduced into Belgium over the last couple of weeks. This has led to the great dismay of the local farming community and outrage from the country as a whole. I am personally thinking about the many farmers who will lose cattle and sheep to the wolves and the impact it will have on their livelihood. Also the impact it will have on the wider ecosystem as a whole which could see various creatures such as rabbits, hares and other small mammals hunted in large quantities.

Wolves have a very inefficient digestive system as do most carnivores which means they need large quantities of meat to survive.

Its a very interesting one but I think this needs resolving urgently as a matter of urgency.

In large parts of the Netherlands we have wolves. They have no predators and have many cubs. They kill sheep, pony's and foals. People are told to keep their animals inside to prevent them dying a horrible death. Wolves eat part of the pony and then the pony is still found alive by the owner. It is horrible and scary. Several are no longer scared of people. They are protected and cannot be culled. It is a disaster

Yes. I listened to the Belgian farmer on the BBC report. He has lost many sheep. The reporter said that he should build better fences. What a dick she was. This thread is not hilarious.

Haven’t RYFT but have a look at what happened when they reintroduced wolves to Yellowstone National Park. It did wonders for the ecosystem - rebalanced it. You need an apex predator for a functioning ecosystem. Also have a look at rewilding by George Monbiot.

Monbiot is the biggest twat going. I hate him.

You can often see across the channel on clear days which means many wolves would have clear line of sight across the Strait of Dover.

This from the PP and the reply from
the OP are comedy gold

Here they are on the shore of Calais planning their assault on the UK

☝️ - not biographical!
Globe22 · 21/03/2023 06:19

Belgium is not a land locked country - but can wolves swim? When will they be at the door?

Hayliebells · 21/03/2023 06:19

They're very beneficial to the local ecology. They hunt species such as dear, which changes the dear behaviour. The dear no longer graze in open areas, which allows trees to grow. Then you have a whole ecosystem developing from that. The ecosystem reverts to a stable ecosystem, as it would have been before humans hunted wolves. An ecosystem of unchecked herbivores such as rabbits etc, is an unstable ecosystem. Loss of trees leads to soil erosion etc. It's really a good thing, it will help people because people rely on nature. Campaigns to prevent things like this from people who really don't know what they're taking about are not helpful to the continued existence of humanity!

Penniless · 21/03/2023 06:20

Nonsense, OP, the villainous Belgian wolves will just loll around snacking on frites mayonnaise and toothsome giant-buttocked Belgian bunnies. Maybe the odd MEP. So you should be very relieved that, because of Brexit, no British MEPs will be at risk if they have to take a basket of goodies to their granny in the wild wolf-infested woods of suburban Brussels.

See, it’s all worked out.

There are already wolves in both Western Europe (lots in the Alps) and Eastern Europe so I don't think it's a problem if they get out of Belgium.

I was just going to say this.

a client of mine (I work in private wealth trust) owns a number of ski chalets in the French alps. Wolves are there. I only know this because we get the reports on the chalets and the town and they regularly mention the wolf population.

the wolves do their thing. The people do theirs.

ThreeFeetTall · 21/03/2023 06:24

Woah, did you not read 'The Wolves of willoughby chase' - they come through the channel tunnel! It was all set out for us in the 60s in a children book. Confused

HoppsAndSpice · 20/03/2023 23:53

Who has introduced these wolves and why? Do they not understand that as a landlocked country that the wolves will spread to countless other countries including the whole European continent, Russia and euro-Asia?

There are already wolves in a lot of European countries. I think you show a lack of understanding of how ecosystems work. We need top predators but have hunted them to extinction in a lot of places which has upset the balance.

You mention farmers losing livestock - there is a scheme to compensate them if this happens. However, where wolves have existed for a few years now they have seen little impact on farmers.

Purplehyena · 21/03/2023 06:30

Oh I’m so confused, is this some weird attempt at a metaphor for migrants crossing the channel that isn’t quite working/I’m not quite getting? Or just a really weird thread about swimming wolves taking over the world?

Well, they got here in the first place, presumably they didn't fly in.

They can swim up to 8 miles... with a fair wind... so sooner than you think.

follyfoot37 · 21/03/2023 06:31

Fret ye not, OP
They are so clever that they will be organising themselves onto small boats soon. Once they have evevled opposable thumbs, they will be able to steer it across the channel to the UK. Then they will be deported to Rwanda
So don't you worry your pretty little head about it anymore. Indeed, have a lie-down before you start worrying about the next wild beast

wolfs are already in germany and the netherlands.
partly introduced
partly natural immigration.

yabu
it's not a big issue.

If the world had listened more to people like him and less to the corporate bosses.... the world wouldn't be facing such damaging climate change, which may well make conventional farming you do, a thing of the past.

Squidrings · 21/03/2023 06:33

Not RTFT but there has been a very successful reintroduction of wolves which has boosted the ecosystem in yessowstone in the 90s Reintroduction of wolves to yellowstone

I love this thread, it's the cleverest and most original wind-up I've seen on any forum ever. Round of applause for the OP.

RosemaryAndTim · 21/03/2023 06:41

Well, I for one love the idea of Suella Braverman spotting a small boat and going down onto the beach to tell everybody off and the boat is full of fucking wolves.

Ylvamoon · 21/03/2023 06:45

Wolves have been travelling from the East to Western Europe since the fall of "The Wall" in the early 90's.
They are coming- ready or not.
