To think the reintroduction of the wild Wolf to Belgium is insanity?

HoppsAndSpice · 20/03/2023 23:50

Wild Wolves have been reintroduced into Belgium over the last couple of weeks. This has led to the great dismay of the local farming community and outrage from the country as a whole. I am personally thinking about the many farmers who will lose cattle and sheep to the wolves and the impact it will have on their livelihood. Also the impact it will have on the wider ecosystem as a whole which could see various creatures such as rabbits, hares and other small mammals hunted in large quantities.

Wolves have a very inefficient digestive system as do most carnivores which means they need large quantities of meat to survive.

Its a very interesting one but I think this needs resolving urgently as a matter of urgency.

🤣🤣
Actually
My Dh is a zoologist
Specialism Is African wild hunting dogs, but recently worked with / studied wolves

They have a type of webbed paw. They are excellent swimmers and have been monitored swimming up to 8 miles, so you never know

Ps
Wolves are hugely intelligent loving animals.
They care for their elderly pack members….not just stick them in a care home
They take turns playing with and looking after each other’s babies including the sick ones
They teach their young…not many of us could cope with home schooling
They form huge family bonds without any rows
They never bully or abandon members of their pack

Theres a lot we could learn from animals that do it all a lot better than we do.

I cannot tell you how much I needed this thread tonight. Thank you, OP.

Could they swim all the way to the amazon though? That's what I'm really worried about. I mean they can't see Brazil from Belgium but what if someone left an atlas open?

Ooo you've got me worried now. Brazil is just a hop, skip and a jump from me in NZ. Our dumb birds can't fly so they'll be sitting ducks...

Nosecan · 21/03/2023 04:17

Maybe the rabbits are big enough to fight them now? I wouldn’t worry op.

There are no current wolves in the UK hence if they managed to get here from Belgium (entirely possible) then they would be an invasive species like crayfish. Which are extremely hard to eradicate in which I’ve had personal experience.

Please share more about your personal experience of trying to eradicate crayfish. Do you mean eating a lot of Pret salads? Perhaps Pret could do a wolf salad, keep on top of the population. They’d be a bit stringy after swimming 20km but someone has to do something.

The thread that keeps on giving. I’ve got nothing to add but this shit is what I’m here for!

ichundich · 21/03/2023 04:30

Is that you Little Red Riding Hood?

Ilovetea33 · 21/03/2023 04:32

This may be a sad indication of my state of mind, but I haven't laughed so much in days.

ThreeLocusts · 21/03/2023 04:41

Chipping in from Belgium. Been here 7 years, have never seen a giant rabbit or any trace of wolf activity. Except in the papers, where the killing of a wolf was noted recently.

Love the notion of wolves staring across the channel at the White cliffs of Dover and planning their invasion.

OP, I'd advise ignoring the tory press for a while. All that shouting about invasive humans seems to have gone to your head.

I'm sitting here at 4:40 am howling at this thread instead of sleeping, and I have to be up at 8:00. Thank you all so much, never have I needed a laugh more 😂😂😂.

HoppsAndSpice · 21/03/2023 00:02

The Strait of Dover is only 20km from the closest point from the UK to Belgium

You can’t be serious 😂 Do you know that Russia has invaded Ukraine and that today the leader of China has apparently said he wants to ‘stand up for the world order’.. if the many wolves now all over the place can slow them down that would be a silver lining?

Sorry couldn’t resist.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 21/03/2023 00:00

I'm pretty sure they won't be swimming the Channel or climbing onto the roof of the Eurostar.

Bloody immigrant wolves, coming over here and eating our bunnies.

sjxoxo · 21/03/2023 05:13

On second thoughts maybe Russia are behind the wolves and this is part of their grand plan?? Could be spy wolves

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/03/2023 05:16

Wolves are generally timid aren't they? They stay far away from humans if they can. Most likely they'll keep to the forests.

Unless people get stupid and start feeding them, which is always a possibility.

They could travel by map, like in that muppet movie 🤣

Howling at 4.40am?

Shit OP, I think you were onto something. They may have infiltrated the UK already.

I had such a shitty day yesterday and I'm not sure if this was your intention, OP but thank you for this absolute gift of a thread. I can't stop laughing, or is it howling?

Raggletaggles · 21/03/2023 05:49

Best not read The Wolves of Willoughby Chase OP.
(And their route of entry into England)

PretzelKnot · 21/03/2023 05:49

This thread has made me so happy. Giant rabbits, bison, crayfish and villainous long-distance swimming wolves.

GiuliaGiulia · 21/03/2023 05:52

In large parts of the Netherlands we have wolves. They have no predators and have many cubs. They kill sheep, pony's and foals. People are told to keep their animals inside to prevent them dying a horrible death. Wolves eat part of the pony and then the pony is still found alive by the owner. It is horrible and scary. Several are no longer scared of people. They are protected and cannot be culled. It is a disaster

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 21/03/2023 05:53

If Crayfish are so invasive why do Morrisons charge four quid for a tiny little pack?

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 21/03/2023 05:59

It's a dastardly plot by the EU, isn't it? Hordes of European wolves will swim across the Channel to rampage across the British countryside devouring our defenceless little bunnikins. The only answer is to introduce the British velociraptor to our farms and countryside - they'll make short work of the wolves.

To think the reintroduction of the wild Wolf to Belgium is insanity?
Breezycheesetrees · 21/03/2023 06:00

OP I don't believe for a second you work in ecology as you claim, because you clearly don't know the first thing about ecosystems, or what an invasive species is (and isn't), or about apex predator reintroductions, or about any of this stuff.
