To think the reintroduction of the wild Wolf to Belgium is insanity?

Wild Wolves have been reintroduced into Belgium over the last couple of weeks. This has led to the great dismay of the local farming community and outrage from the country as a whole. I am personally thinking about the many farmers who will lose cattle and sheep to the wolves and the impact it will have on their livelihood. Also the impact it will have on the wider ecosystem as a whole which could see various creatures such as rabbits, hares and other small mammals hunted in large quantities.

Wolves have a very inefficient digestive system as do most carnivores which means they need large quantities of meat to survive.

Its a very interesting one but I think this needs resolving urgently as a matter of urgency.

Can anyone discuss next actions to prevent this as it seems the vast majority agree with my opinions.

I think the model is that the wolves will kill the deer who eat the sapling trees so if there are no deer then the landscape will become more floral.

I wouldn’t want to go on a walk alone though.

Who has introduced these wolves and why? Do they not understand that as a landlocked country that the wolves will spread to countless other countries including the whole European continent, Russia and euro-Asia?

Russia already has one of the largest wolf populations in the world so I think you're worrying over nothing to be honest.

Are you in a position to take ‘next actions’ op? And there doesn’t seem to be anything to prevent it now if they’ve already done it surely?

SmallGreatThings1 · 20/03/2023 23:56

Who cares about wolves when we have BISON about?

Kerfuffler · 20/03/2023 23:57

Will they fight with bison?

The Wolf which has been reintroduced into Belgium has the potential to become an invasive species and kill off native creatures in Russia etc.

Total nonsense. Wolves are native to Europe, they haven't been reintroduced to Belgium. They have simply walked there as a consequence of populations increasing in other countries such as France and Germany.

Wolves are an important part of the ecosystem, especially for controlling animals such as deer which don't have other predators. Carrion from animals killed and eaten by wolves is also an important food source for other species.

They’ve already spread in Europe.

They've had it easy for far too long tbh.

Wolves are a non native species to Europe and the UK and actually what’s been advised here is that many of the countries listed have invasive species of wolves which are attempting to kill species and other wolves etc. I am most interested in what we can do to stop the wolves and also stop the wolves from spreading into the United Kingdom which we already have several invasive species including squirrels and crayfish.

Is it right to spread to a landlocked country? When other countries wouldn’t be consenting to these animals which can then enter these countries. This is the real question here.

There are already wolves in both Western Europe (lots in the Alps) and Eastern Europe so I don't think it's a problem if they get out of Belgium.

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 21/03/2023 00:00

I'm pretty sure they won't be swimming the Channel or climbing onto the roof of the Eurostar.

It’s a fair comment you have made but I don’t think it’s fair that you are saying one creature should die just because they’ve had it too easy. Many of these wolves could be maintained in captivity etc.

Sent here in small boats by ruthless wolf traffickers

wheresmymojo · 21/03/2023 00:02

FYI for those not wanting to walk around wolves - they're actually extremely cautious of humans.

Attacks by wolves are vanishingly rare in countries that have them.

I went to visit a Wolf-dog sanctuary in Canada - these are part wolf, part dog as the name suggests.

The ones that were more wolf than dog were very, very timid and cautious and prone to bolting off if you moved towards them too quickly even after living with or around humans for their entire lives and being part dog.

DidyouNO · 21/03/2023 00:02

Wolves have been in Europe for 10s of thousands of years. They re definitely native to Europe and your concern they spread in Russia from Belgium is unfounded. Russia already has wolves. About 50,000 of them. Always has done. As they are a native species

StrawHatOnTheParcelShelf · 21/03/2023 00:02

I'd fucking love a pet wolf but I digress.

OP you want wolves kept captive (cruel) to protect other animals from cruelty?
You don't want the wolves to eat cattle - so you can eat them?

You animal welfare ethics are all over the place.

The Strait of Dover is only 20km from the closest point from the UK to Belgium

Just wait til they get sent to Rwanda...

Lucanus · 21/03/2023 00:03

Where on earth are you getting your information from? It's a complete load of rubbish. Wolves have been native to Europe for hundreds of thousands of years - they are certainly not invasive and they are not going to kill off native species.

IncessantNameChanger · 21/03/2023 00:04

How would the wolves get to the UK? Swim? Or sneak onto boats like rats?

wheresmymojo · 21/03/2023 00:04

Wolves don't tend to swim 20km Grin

Also, wolves are native species to Europe and the UK

Are you quite sure you're feeling okay OP?
