Preferred pronoun labels at childrens event

StopitSarah · 19/03/2023 20:21

I took my primary age children to a science event this weekend. It’s run by university students. Almost all of them had their preferred pronouns on their name labels.

AIBU to feel that was unnecessary and to feel a bit uneasy? One of my children wanted to know why “the man is saying we should say he/him. Isn’t that obvious?”

I asked one of the students who said it was to show support to any trans helpers and was for the benefit of the (adult) students, not the children.

I’m SO BORED and irritated by the trans agenda being every-bloody-where.

But AIBU? I had a good chat with one of the students and he said that they’re all science students and understand that woman = biological female is too simplistic. My brain exploded.

Yes, my post was saying that it was happening, quoting @Tellyaddict123 who didn’t seem to be aware.

Sorry @Sarahcoggles, I got the names mixed up. Apologies.

Also is it not homophobic to expel lesbians from dating apps for complaining it has lots of men with she/her pronouns? Is it not homophobic to tell gay men to get over their 'genital preference' and sleep with a he/him trans man or they are bigoted?

///

Really hoping for some discussion on this but maybe this bigoted thing only goes one way Confused

I can see why women are scared, but I also think a lot of it from what I can see so far is people hyping others up with false facts.

Lots of trans people want to rape, do smear tests, sexual abuse women which I’m struggling to believe and seems be distracting people from the actual issues?

If people can keep this to facts I like appreciate the whole debate more and it makes it more credible from your stand point. I find calling names and saying this one time my friend of friend this happened not great from a debating and education POV.

I would appreciate some facts and links please:
Biological men being female:

  • links to them being able to compete in sports and it being in the rule book.
  • links to being in female prisons, the most recent article I read “she” wasn’t allowed in the female prison and sent to the male.
  • being able to perform smear tests? Or any gyne procedures without a chaperone (which is offered if someone is male)

I think all of the above is wrong, but I’m also happy for someone to be trans if it’s not affecting me, which currently it hasn’t. Has anyone actually been affected by the points above personally? What percentage of people are trans and specifically male to female? What’s the chance of me meeting someone who is trans?

Perfect opportunity to explain simply to your child that not everyone who looks like a man prefers to be called “he/him”.

They're not the same thing @CremeEggQueen. My sexuality doesn't impact anyone else. LGB has nothing to do with T.

I know it doesn't impact anyone else but I bet a lot of people disagree - they'd spout stuff like it's not natural, and it does affect them as "their kids dont need to know about being gay, why can't they just be kids?" 🙄 or that you shouldn't get married etc as it dilutes the meaning etc
Its the same way of thinking, just against trans people instead

It isn't inclusive when women's single-sex spaces are denied to them because men wearing dresses want to use them too.

@Naunet what the hell are you on about? No biological men can compete in female sports that’s just silly. That would be an unfair advantage. In no way shape or form is that what I said. In places like smear tests, jails etc the biological sex still stands and I doubt a trans person would put themselves in that position?

Why have you jumped to calling me names? You seem so angry? Has someone trans tried to do a smear on you against your will?

Please can you give me some stats, are most people trans wanting to compete in sports or do a lot of them work in the medical field? Do they want to do smear tests on women? Just wondering if this is more a fear that’s being projected or if you have stats…after all im a scientist so any peer reviewed data you can provide would be great.

I just don’t have an issue with someone walking down the street being male or female if they are biological the other sex. It’s not affecting me. Happy for you toy provide some peer reviewed data though, as I said I’m new to this and trying to learn

I agree that males competing as women is silly. It's happening, though.

Have you not heard of Fallon Fox, Lia Thomas, Emily Bridges, Laurel Hubbard...?

All male athletes competing in female events.

Are you completely unaware of the reason that the Scottish Government collapsed recently? If it hadn't been for public outrage a rapist would have been placed in a women's prison, in accordance with SPS policy. This wasn't an isolated example, look up Karen White, Katie Dolatowski, Barbie Kardashian...

Do we really need women to be assaulted to learn that putting a rapist in a cell with a woman isn’t a great idea? This is the cause of frustration. These things are obvious, but they’re not being stopped, until women have suffered. Are you OK with that?

And it did happen again. Karen White committed his crimes before the Scottish transwoman case just recently. Lessons weren’t learned.

Sarahcoggles · 20/03/2023 10:27

@Tellyaddict123 I’m baffled at your lack of awareness, especially given your username! This stuff is all over the news every day. And lessons are being learned, but very very slowly, each time a woman is assaulted. How many assaults is acceptable before change is needed?

I believe a man won an award for being in the top 100 businesswomen of the year some time ago. He’s a man, a proud husband and father on his Instagram bio, but some days he wears a dress, so he was eligible for this award. Somewhere there’s a real woman who lost out on her place due to him.

There’s been some great points, thanks for the links.

I do still stand by my original comments that a trans female shouldn’t be in sports, jails doing any medial procedures and I didn’t realise there was so many in sport.

However I still don’t think I’m massively affected my trans people, it’s got to be small percentage and then even within that group it’s got be a smaller percentage of people taking the piss and not actually trans?

I think I will always be a bit grey on the area. Thank you for the people who are actually willing to educate and debate without being angry / rude / childish. If you want to get you point across to others and get people on side, being rude isn’t a great starting point.

Chenford · 20/03/2023 10:35

spelunky · 20/03/2023 09:19

😂

How is other people choosing to wear stickers intolerant to you?

They're not wearing stickers saying "We hate gender critical people". They're not forcing you to wear a sticker.

They are simply wearing a sticker stating their own preferred pronoun that they would like to be addressed by.

How on earth is that intolerant of you?

Don't be disingenuous.

It's not simply about wearing a sticker. It's about compelling others' speech.

It's about the resultant reaction of activists if anyone dare not comply. Or say so much as 'hang on a minute though, can we just talk about the risk that might be introduced with self ID'? #nodebate

It's about the additional difficulty that many people - my SEN daughter included - have, tying themselves up in knots trying to 'comply' with denying what their eyes see.

It's about a million and one things other than a sticker.

Sarahcoggles · 20/03/2023 10:35

Theeyeballsinthesky · 20/03/2023 10:28

It’s OK though, because nearly 4 years later it looks like this is being banned now, so “lessons are being learned”. Which is lovely. Never mind that fact that while the people in power were slowly learning these blindingly obvious lessons, women and girls were being battered on the pitch by men who have male muscle bulk but wear dresses. But it doesn’t matter. They were only women so they’re expendable. What’s important is that mens’ feelings weren’t hurt.

Few of us will ever be directly affected by males in women's prisons. Most people will never see the inside of a prison cell, after all.

The women who are affected are some of the most vulnerable, shouldn't we look out for them?

lifeturnsonadime · 20/03/2023 10:37

God it's all so tedious.

Young people have been brainwashed to giving away women's rights and to believe it is progressive to do so.

There is nothing progressive about -

Males in women's spaces, prisons and women's refuges.
Males winning women's prizes because they wear lippy and a skirt.
Girls no longer having toilets to themselves at school when they are dealing with periods.
Girls and women no longer having single sex sport.
Lesbians and gay men being told they are 'genital fetishists' or like sexual racists for BEING same sex attracted.

I don't care if your male child prefers to wear dresses and has chosen to identify as a girl HIS gender identity does not outweigh my daughter's rights. It's fucking misogynistic to tell my daughter to move over to make way for your male child and that her rights matter less. Why do female children matter so little? Makes me so angry that this is repackaged misogyny and women are being called bigots for calling it out.

But surely you can see that legislating for the majority of transwomen, who just want to wear dresses and paint their nails, enables a nasty minority to do a huge amount of damage? The man who made the comment about drying his hands on his penis - he’s probably not a rapist, not violent, probably not wanting to compete in women’s sport - but he clearly got a kick out of making a woman feel uncomfortable. Why is this OK?

Thing is @Tellyaddict123, anybody who has issues with TW in sport, bathrooms etc is labelled a terf, a bigot. So if you don't completely agree with that - well, that's what you'll be seen as too by some.
Most GC people are fully supportive of trans people's rights to live and present any way they want. They object when the ideology harms others, that's all. As a pp said, it's not anti-trans rights as many people mistakenly believe, it's pro women and children's rights. Trying to work out a system that works for everyone instead of being railroaded into being kind/stupid enough to give up our own hard won rights.
