Happy Mothering Sunday to all of you lovely people who are of a mothering nature, be that female, male, people with kids or people without kids.

Thinking of those people who will find today hard, for whatever reason.

Have a lovely day, everyone!

Yes he gets Father's Day too. Never mind, he does double parenting.

Sorry that's just daft. Like I say, his family can choose how they celebrate.

Single parents (I'm one) don't need two days - they can be celebrated as they wish or not on the day that's allocated to their role as mother or father.

The OP knew what they were doing. Trying to spread a little division and upset on Mother's Day. The day we celebrate mothers.

Well done OP. You can trot off to church now your work is done.

💯

The church bit is especially stomach-churning.

What's the difference between mothering and fathering?

I'm a lone parent, so I do everything. I'm not sure which parts are mothering and which parts are fathering.

It was a nice sentiment, OP. But, Mother's Day is hard for a lot of people. Sometimes it's better to leave things alone.

OverCCCs · 19/03/2023 13:02

Mothering Sunday is a completely different holiday from Mother’s Day, the latter of which is what the vast majority of people are actually celebrating in the UK today and which is by its nature exclusive to women/mothers. Goady post is goady.

For those people questioning my use of capitals, it was to make my point clear that I was addressing EVERYONE.

Some of you have clearly decided that there was another agenda here. Really not sure how you came to that conclusion, but ok.

Blimey, this has turned into a right can of worms...

What's everyone doing today? Anything nice? All I wanted really was a big slab of cake and the chance to have an afternoon to devote to my hobbies. Have all my sewing stuff out, doing some nice crafting and then I might have a relaxing bath. Wine will probably be on the agenda too.

Hope everyone gets to celebrate in a way that makes them happy. X

As a single parent here also, it's not about 'mothering' or 'fathering'.

Today is Mother's Day, for the celebration of mothers, who are always women.

In June, Father's Day will celebrate fathers, who are always men.

It's simple, really.

Why would you address EVERYONE on Mother's Day, which is a day that celebrates women?

Happy Mothering Sunday

Celebrate the day servants were allowed to go back "home" to their mother church and hopefully see their family and childhood friends.

Exactly how it started.

I was just wondering because a few posters mentioned mothering roles and fathering roles. I was genuinely curious as to what people meant by that. Mother's Day generally seems to be a day of disappointment for a lot of MNers anyway.

I take your point

But there just seems to be an additional layer when a mum has died. They can do things how they please - I'm sure it doesn't affect anyone else.

It's not something I've thought of too much before. I know it's different, but I am a woman who never had my own children because of infertility, but I have nephews and nieces. Someone posted in a group chat I was in happy mother's day to all the mums, stepmums, grans and aunties, and I thought it was lovely. I don't see that it takes anything away from mothers.

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 19/03/2023 17:45

I could not be happier. My daughters have turned up randomly from around the country with flowers and chocolates. All I need is them here on my doorstep. Their dad will have his day on Father's Day. It's a good day 💖

You are right - it doesn't. These are all women. (My earlier posts made this exact point).

However men do not need to be celebrated on Mother's Day

EatingWormsMichael · 19/03/2023 20:24

Yes let's water down every celebration until we don't really know what we are celebrating anymore. We will celebrate nothing and everything. Happy Day Day to you ALL!

@LadyHaHaHeeHaw - got back about 2.30 so got 30 mins with Dd before she went to work and lots of cuddles with ds ☺️

Hope yours was good
