To be panicked about new plate glaze

Bought a new set of plates and bowls recently. Have noticed a bit of a chemical smell when taking them out of the dishwasher (they're dishwasher safe) but assumed it was because they were new. Just noticed that on several of the plates which have a speckled clear glaze effect the glaze has completely come off which means the glaze has been leaching all over out other dishes in the dishwasher and onto our food for weeks. I don't know much about pottery/sonewear but I'm panicking that it will have done harm to us and the children. Bought from a reputable large company!

Contact them and query it, although if they are safe to eat off I imagine it isn’t anything dangerous.

I’d be annoyed they had been ruined in the dishwasher when supposedly dishwasher safe though and would want a refund.

I've read online that clear glazes can contain chemicals such as lead although safe when fired properly. The bowls in the set haven't leeched/come off in the same way so assuming something has gone wrong during firing. Really hoping there wasn't any lead in them and am now panicking about dc's.

I will definitely be contacting them, just wanting to know how panicked I should be. Would be grateful if anyone knows anything about stonewear glazes.

OP do you have anxiety or OCD?

Laura856 · 19/03/2023 19:45

It’ll have been washed away though?

I don’t know about plates/pottery. However, my DF used to work in the bus industry, we were having a chat as my friend was restoring an old bus and was worried about lead in the paint. It hasn’t been legal to use lead in paints for over 40 years, so I should think you’re safe. I would return for a refund as that shouldn’t happen to new plates that are dishwasher safe.

Everything in the dish washer has had the smell on it though, so I'm worried that it's all been contaminated bu the dishes. I do have OCD.

Hopefully this will help. Take the plates out and pack up for a refund. Wash everything again at the highest temp.

That helps a lot, thank you SecretVictoria.
