Would you hand over the CCTV footage?

I can't work out what is the "right" thing to do.

We have CCTV on our house, it Covers our drive, back garden and some of the street outside our house (angled to show our front path and front garden but also catches some of the on street parking).

We checked the legality of it all when we installed it but have had endless problems with one of our neighbours objecting to it. They like to purposefully stand in the cameras view to give us the finger and once even came up our drive to spit on it. To be honest its a wider issue as our old owners used to allow them to use their drive for parking and we stopped that when we moved in, they never got over that.

To cut a long story short... they have had someone hit their car outside ours. They have demanded (not asked mind!) That we send them the CCTV footage of the incident. It does show what seems to be a car going too close to theirs, but doesn't show the occupant or the licence plate.

I'll be honest the CFery astounds me, I want to tell them to take a running jump if they think they're getting help from the cameras that they have complained about since the beginning.

I know we have to give someone any stored images of an individual if they complete an SAR, but I don't think that applies here. But then again I feel like I'm creating extra tension (and being an arse) if we refuse! I would give it to the police if they asked but I can't imagine they'll investigate the matter and just say insurance should handle it.

So would you hand it over (after all it is a crime to hit a car and drive off) or tell them to take a long walk off a short pier?

YANBU - don't hand over footage
YABU - you should give the footage

Yeah I think they want to check the camera range. Do you actually have proof their car was damaged. I'd say oh I'm really sorry, as we've repeatedly told you, our CCTV only covers our drive and a very small part of the footpath, it doesn't show any of the road or your property I'm afraid.

Bluekerfuffle · 18/03/2023 17:12

I would hand it over on condition they never give your camera the finger or spit on it again and generally stop being pricks about the fact they can’t park on your drive.

Odiebay · 18/03/2023 17:13

"you broke the camera when you spat on it" so no footage

MoreSleepPleasee · 18/03/2023 17:14

Nope. I wouldn't give them it.

LuckyDonna · 18/03/2023 17:15

OneSmallStepUp · 18/03/2023 15:41

I would hand over the footage but tell them to stop being such a bunch of cunts about the cameras now.

I like this approach, and the wording.

RandomUsernameHere · 18/03/2023 17:17

No way. I'd tell them you have disabled the camera due to their intimidating behaviour so there is no footage available.

TheChoiceIsYours · 18/03/2023 17:20

I’d be tempted to ask for their email then send them a compilation of the clips of their behaviour, ending with me looking down the camera and giving them the finger. But I’d never actually do it because I’d be too worried about reprisals or starting a full on neighbour war. The fantasy would be fun though!

I’d probably settle for telling them that I’m being very cautious about use of the footage given the concerns that they have raised previously but that I’d be happy to provide it to the police so please do pass on my contact details.

noimaginationforausername · 18/03/2023 17:22

Nope. Spitting on your drive? They can fuck off.

diddl · 18/03/2023 17:24

If it doesn't actually show anything I can't see the point.

I would have thought that it'll just piss they off even more.

Why do they think that you will have captured/recorded anything?

Riverlee · 18/03/2023 17:26

I’d hand it over and be the bigger person - kill with kindness. Hopefully that would stop the complaining.

Emmamoo89 · 18/03/2023 17:28

I wouldn't hand it over. Fuck 'em

Bananasinpjamas4567 · 18/03/2023 17:28

I would send them a compilation of their antisocial behaviour caught on the camera. I would also put it on my local Facebook group but I give no fucks.

DaveyJonesLocker · 18/03/2023 17:30

I'd say "yeah sure" then send them a compilation of all the times they've done stupid shit to your camera with "sorry its just full of this"

Merangutan · 18/03/2023 17:31

Exactly what others have said. You should refuse on the grounds that the footage only captures your property, remind them that it’s what they requested, and tell them that for this reason the footage is a private recording of your own home and you won’t be letting them view it for other purposes. The CFs.

They've hounded us through the ICO, so we've had to tell them in detail what we record, how long for, how its stored, show them what we can see etc etc. It's all above board and been done the right way but it's just another way to mess with us really!

All because the old owners didn't drive so let them park a car on their driveway!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 18/03/2023 17:32

Not a chance.

In fact I would be tempted to say to please CF you moved the angle of the camera to suit their needs and wishes. Just to really rub it in.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 18/03/2023 17:33

You could say that if the police ask you for the footage you will give it to them directly.

Namechangenoidea · 18/03/2023 17:33

For you to know that they have spat on it and put their fingers up at it- you must sit and watch it. I find that very weird… Give them the footage. Why live with tension?!

LondonQueen · 18/03/2023 17:35

I'd them then to file a leave it to the police. If you can't see the impact anyways it's pointless.

SgtCatherineCawood · 18/03/2023 17:37

When a car hit mine in a public car park, I emailed the people who owned it and asked if there was any CCTV. They replied there was but would only be allowed to hand it over to the police and not to me

But because they spat on your drive I wouldn't give them a thing unless the police asked for it

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 18/03/2023 17:38

“I’m sorry, Neighbour - are you saying that after multiple instances of you flipping our CCTV camera the bird, and even spitting at it, you now need our help with footage from that camera?”

user1473878824 · 18/03/2023 17:38

I’d give it to them and be the bigger person but be sure to say perhaps you won’t SPIT on my property now. Foul.

FfoxRedN · 18/03/2023 17:41

I would very obviously decline. So they will quite happily abuse you through it, but also now what to use if for their benefit...no chance!!!

DizzyLizzyKizzy · 18/03/2023 17:44

callthataspade · 18/03/2023 15:41

I would be petty and send them the footage of them giving the camera the finger.

Nah. They can get to fuck if you're going to help them.

GrinGrinGrin

I like your style!

FfoxRedN · 18/03/2023 17:45

I would wait until they contact the police or insurance company to get the footage. Then I would explore if they've broken any public order laws with their behaviour. Absolutely disgusting neighbours!! I can't get over the cheek of it!
