Does anyone really watch Comic Relief anymore?

Who actually donates to this? I never hear anyone talk about it in RL and never watch it myself? Becoming a bit tired now?

They stopped selling the noses in Sainsbury's.
So strange. Surely they'd get more sales if they kept selling them there

OhmygodDont · 18/03/2023 13:51

Our school did something but they are actually donating to Syria/Turkey instead of comic relief.

I’ve never really got behind it tbh. Then again even children in need has lost its appeal as such to me these days.

DevantMaJardin · 18/03/2023 13:53

We don't watch it. Haven't since I was a child. It's all just too cheesy and gimmicky.

Rosula · 18/03/2023 13:54

As they are still making millions for very good causes, presumably lots of people watch and support it.

PinkiOcelot · 18/03/2023 13:55

Personally I hate it. Haven’t watched it for years.

FourEyesGood · 18/03/2023 13:55

I watched a bit of it last night and caught the Stath Lets Flats charity song, which was brilliant - it prompted me to donate. The other stuff was less up my street.
My friend sent me a link to the Ghosts sequence, which must have been in much earlier than I was watching. I enjoyed that (but have as always loved Ghosts - and Stath, to be fair).
I think I probably watched about 40 minutes off the show in total.

LucyLeave · 18/03/2023 13:56

Well 34 million was donated so some people are watching, donating or raising funds for it.

derbylass81 · 18/03/2023 13:57

I remember Red Nose Day being a big thing when I was at primary school in the late 80s. It barely registered in adulthood and now that I have kids I am aware of it as they were asked to wear red and donate at school / nursery but know next to nothing about it and have heard not it other than this. Don't watch live tv so wasn't on my radar at all.

Agree it's probably a bit tired and agree children in need the same.....but if they are raising millions then fair play to them.

PeskyRooks · 18/03/2023 13:59

It's not the massive thing it used to be. When I was at middle school late eighties everyone had a red nose, this year I've not even seen them for sale anywhere, apparently they are paper this year?
Dcs school said just paint your nose red if you want and they took in their £1.

I didn't watch any of it, celebrities doing skits make me cringe tbf. I donate to charities of my choosing when I want.

Adrelaxzz · 18/03/2023 13:59

I think Sainsbury's stopped selling the noses as they realised they were environmentally unfriendly and in the long run creating tons of waste that will last longer than the good they do.

viques · 18/03/2023 14:00

I only saw one bit which was a very funny and ironic song by two female musicians ( don’t know their names) which was quite strongly mocking the celebrity faux caring that both Children in need and Red Nose bring out. I was quite surprised, but hope it was a signal that saintly do gooding by celebrities is a downward trend.

BadForBusiness · 18/03/2023 14:04

I entered the "win a TV prop" thing and donated for that, I assume that will have made a fair amount, I've seen Strictly fansites promoting Craig's 10 paddle, and Dr Who sites promoting her T shirt etc.
(site is open for another 24 hours if anyone wants to enter).

NuffSaidSam · 18/03/2023 14:08

The money raised this year was much less than in previous years I believe. I think it's definitely lost it's big appeal, I didn't even know it was on!

PuppyMonkey · 18/03/2023 14:12

I watched a bit where it was just clips of “the best of” from all the previous years and that was pretty good tbf. Can’t say I donated though, couldn’t really be bothered.Blush

Yea I saw it and thought it was the funniest performance of the evening! Genius.

IncessantNameChanger · 18/03/2023 14:18

I'm probably miserable but seeing so many local charities folding near me, or being less and less able to support children with mh, carers, or disability I can't really get into supporting charities further away. I'd rather just keep support local. We are rural so it was thin on the ground to start with

Twattergy · 18/03/2023 14:20

It completely passed me by this year. I'mglad they've stopped selling so much CR tat, it was v wasteful. The projects they support are good though.

Brightstar84 · 18/03/2023 14:23

I admire the initiative overall, but I agree, the concept is tired now. Like others I remember when ‘red nose day’ was a big thing in the 90s. even cars would have the red noses!

megletthesecond · 18/03/2023 14:27

No. I donated to Arielles daft DJ challenge on radio 1 though.

Nolimittomylove · 18/03/2023 14:27

I donated. As I didn’t have to buy all the red nose tat this year and my kids schools didn’t even do so much as a no uniform day for it.

80sMum · 18/03/2023 14:32

I've never watched it. Also never watched Sport Relief (or whatever it's called) or Children in Need. I find these types of fundraising events rather distasteful I'm afraid. I know some people love them and a lot of people donate as a result of them, so, each to their own, but they're not for me.

Hooklander · 18/03/2023 14:42

I think more people are donating directly to charities, and 'going local', owing to

The increased ability to do so via social media
An increased awareness of local need eg local food banks
An increased distrust of some of the beneficiary causes, such as Mermaids
An increased awareness of the 'middle man' costs and the grant-awarding rules of Comic Relief and CiN

bigbluebus · 18/03/2023 14:45

I didn't even realise it was on tv last night. DH usually has the remote control and would definitely avoid watching it anyway.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/03/2023 14:47

I bought a comic relief sweatshirt but only because I liked it for its self. Haven't watched it in years.

tigger1001 · 18/03/2023 14:48

I didn't even know it was comic relief yesterday, which probably tells you how much it's been advertised locally re fundraising.
