Does anyone really watch Comic Relief anymore?

Who actually donates to this? I never hear anyone talk about it in RL and never watch it myself? Becoming a bit tired now?

The best thing about last night was them showing clips from years past !

Some great comedy back in the day !

Other than that thought it's had it's day !

Runnerducksdelight · 18/03/2023 16:40

I know Comic Relief is an independent charity but I think there has been a loss of trust between the public and the BBC …

everydayaFriday · 18/03/2023 16:41

I stopped donating years ago when stories about % going to the actual charities (not a lot) and the corruption in the areas supported became well known

Some people get money yes but possibly not who you think

And what damage is done by articifially injecting cash into poorly governed third world countries. Some research has shown doing nothing would be better and that comic relief has been damaging

premicrois · 18/03/2023 16:43

I watched a bit of it last night and caught the Stath Lets Flats charity song, which was brilliant

We put the TV on just before this song. Quickly changed the channel, it is awful!

As someone mentioned upthread though I was a viewer back when Hale and Pace released a song, and Bananarama, Mel and Kim, right said Fred. The latest offering is utter garbage in comparison.

Eaumyword · 18/03/2023 16:48

Our school decided not to sell the noses this year, because we had to pre-buy in bulk with no returns and they have shot up in price this year. Might explain why the supermarkets aren't selling them? We certainly had loads unsold from last year because of the bulk buy rule.
We just did a Mufti day for £1, as did my DS's school.
To be honest, I prefer to support local charities with lower overheads and more direct and immediate assistance to local people in need.

Theunamedcat · 18/03/2023 16:54

Kids had a red nose day dress in red or someone who inspires you day but that was it no red noses in the shop no deelies badges nothing 🤷‍♀️ I mean the pin badges were nice

SequinsandStilettos · 18/03/2023 16:54

Primary had a bucket and non-uniform day.
Amazon were selling the noses but having bought them last year from Sainsbos and deeny-boppers, I went down there last week to be told they weren't taking part this year. TKMaxx were selling tees but mine don't like Mr. Men.

Iplayer have traitors, eurovision and ghosts sketches. I also watched the half an hour on the lookback at comic relief big brother. That was interesting.
Lenny Henry had another project on - first year he hasn't been there. David Tennant and others I saw briefly live were too enthusiastic. Cannot do forced revelry on a Friday. Wink

Gethin Jones did look exhausted.
24 hours dancing is crazy and I bet they are persuaded to do it this rather than just volunteering for it ! ( apart from the Ritchie guy and his 'drum a thon , ' which he clearly loved, but then he was sitting down !)
Sara Cox did the dancing one too one year

That's him! Gethin Jones. Lovely looking guy actually, when he's not dying of exhaustion 😃

I only saw one bit which was a very funny and ironic song by two female musicians ( don’t know their names) which was quite strongly mocking the celebrity faux caring that both Children in need and Red Nose bring out. I was quite surprised, but hope it was a signal that saintly do gooding by celebrities is a downward trend.

Flo & Joan are brilliant. IIRC, they're sisters who perform under their grandmothers' first names!

There's an hour-long special of theirs on Amazon Prime and they've also regularly been on the Mark Watson comedy series that's just finished on Radio 4 - should be on Sounds.

Itsnotfairhuff · 18/03/2023 22:36

I love Flo and Joan

Witchcraftandhokum · 19/03/2023 07:13

Didn't Flo and Joan get tons of hate on here after a Nationwide ad. MN is a fickle place.

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/03/2023 07:27

i watched it for the first time in a long time and was concerned as to why they showed best of
are they in trouble that they have to resort to showing past shows?

JustDanceAddict · 19/03/2023 07:36

Haven’t watched it or CIN for years! I remember it being big in the 80s - I was at sixth form when it started and wore my nose!!
Did go back to watching when my DCs were young though for a bit! The odd sketch is funny but I couldn’t sit through a whole evening of it.

Sunnysunbun · 19/03/2023 07:39

I give to the Give Directly charity every month. This seems a better approach than the traditional idea of how charities work.
I seem to have missed Red Nose Day completely this year.

DustyLee123 · 19/03/2023 07:41

I’ve never ever watched it.

Badbadbunny · 19/03/2023 07:44

Didn't know it was on, probably because I don't watch live TV so don't see adverts/trailers etc.

Murphyturphy · 19/03/2023 07:48

I didn’t know it was on until I saw a picture of a presenter in red dress in the papers.

CoffeeBean5 · 19/03/2023 08:08

IncessantNameChanger · 18/03/2023 14:18

I'm probably miserable but seeing so many local charities folding near me, or being less and less able to support children with mh, carers, or disability I can't really get into supporting charities further away. I'd rather just keep support local. We are rural so it was thin on the ground to start with

I agree. We should support small local charities in the UK. The major charities (British and worldwide) pay their Chief Execs and other high up positions eye watering salaries. Same for those in high up positions in the NHS.

Myknewname · 19/03/2023 08:34

I work for a charity who have received funds from comic relief. We were interviewed and filmed, during a session. Quite weird seeing yourself on TV.

Laptopneeded · 19/03/2023 08:42

No.
Dc used to get all geared up for it at school, and then come back home watch it and its too depressing and sad. One minuet there is a fun sketch the next a child is seriously ill.
It's not age appropriate for my dc. It's too heavy.

I don't know why they did it like that

Crumpetdisappointment · 19/03/2023 09:47

they still do @Laptopneeded

TheChosenTwo · 19/03/2023 09:54

I don’t watch. Just find it too sad and I’m already going through a really shitty time myself at the moment and don’t need to be subjecting myself to additional sadness.
Ds had mufti at school, dh bunged him a fiver for it and that’s as far as we went.

PlateBilledDuckyPerson · 19/03/2023 09:58

electricmoccasins · 18/03/2023 16:16

It used to be huge, even chart songs. Remember 'Stonk' by Hale and Pace?

Ha ha, I accidentally caught a bit of that masterpiece when I was taping something else from the radio back in the day.

fgdk · 19/03/2023 10:00

I wouldn't have even known it was on if it wasn't for the radio 1 thing, neither school did anything for it by us.
