To want to shut off downstairs toilet

It’s next to the kitchen. You have to walk through the kitchen to get to it. I hate it. I’ve tried telling everyone in the house it’s not to be used for no2s because I think it’s bloody gross. But the kids don’t always listen and quite frankly I just don’t want it there anymore. We have a perfectly good bathroom upstairs. 9 people in our house though which does make me question in a bit. We’re renting so can’t get rid of it altogether but we also have zero storage in this house so we could use it for that. What do you guys think? Would I be silly to just shut it off? Honestly the fact it’s next to the kitchen winds me up

I like this idea.

Until the time it takes leads to poo in the pants or a puddle of piddle on your kitchen floor.

Open the window, cover it to stop the cat, and let the temp do the rest.

sunglassesonthetable · 18/03/2023 17:53

I knew everyone would get their knickers in a twist about the cat. Cat will be fine.

I thought the idea about the airer sounded good.

Also you can get automatic close loo seats which might help.

I'd keep the window a tad open, turn off heating and discourage. And also I'd get on to landlord about installing an extractor fan ( who knows they might?)

You can also get loo seats that are automatic close. Might help.

I feel for you OP and hope a house that suits you better turns up. I'd hate that loo/kitchen situation too but overall I think you need to suck it up because of all the kids.

No the bathroom door opens into the bathroom. There is a space of a few feet in between the bathroom and kitchen. In the space we had a dryer and storage as well as the door to go outside into the yard. We could have got another bathroom in that space BTW. Most rental properties in our town are two bedroom. Not many 3 bed come up. As they are small Victorian terraces the only option is to split a bedroom or to put in a downstairs bathroom. They usually put in a downtairs bathroom.

fgdk · 18/03/2023 17:57

It's already a stretch at 2 toilets for 9 people, of course you need to leave it be.

Sorry OP like I said I wasn't trying to sound bad in my post, clearly it came across worse then I though because even with an added note that I didn't mean it bad and a credit to you it still sounded bad to you. Sorry.

It’s fine, I just thought I was getting accused of child abuse for a minute aswel as the mistreatment of the cat! But yeah it’s fine I know sometimes things come across worse written down.

We used to rent an old sem that had a kitchen with a loo that opened out from near the sink. Used to be able to chat if one of us was washing up etc. Those were the days!

fgdk · 18/03/2023 18:40

@Daisydu sorry I didn't read the rest of the thread first, I didn't mean to add to a pile on, I clearly thought I had something unique and worthwhile to say 🙈😂

Not at all. I meant, badly, the kids have already had a rough time. Making their toileting harder then it needs to be isn't necessary. I'm sorry I'm shit at explaining what I mean properly. I definitely said I take my hat off to you for taking the children in the first place. That's a huge this to do for them. Respect.

My dds really close friend is called Daisy Du so this thread is confusing me 😐

ilovewispas · 18/03/2023 22:08

Keep the toilet.

But then I like lots of loos! We have 5 and there are 4 of us (not a gigantic house either, the people before us just really liked toilets!)

adriftinadenofvipers · 18/03/2023 23:05

longtompot · 18/03/2023 17:20

We have neighbours who do this and we have to put up with the cats yowling through the night. It really isn't fun.

Is there anyway you could put up a room divider near the door, to block off the sight, if not the smells, from the loo? I can't quite picture what the layout is.

I missed the post where the idiot informed us all that a cat is a pet not a baby.

Totally missing the whole point that pets deserve to be looked after properly.

@longtompot if the cats are yowling through the night, they mustn't be neutered. If you can pick them up, take them to the vet and get them neutered yourself - irresponsible owners!! There are schemes where it can be done cheaply. We have two full toms around and if I could ever get my hands on them, it would be goolies gone!!

TomeTome · 19/03/2023 00:22

I don’t think you can neuter someone else’s cat 😱

Grumpsy · 19/03/2023 00:31

There are 2 of us in our house, we’re looking to move shortly, we have 2 bathrooms in our current house, and our must have is 2 bathrooms. So one toiled for 9 people is completely unreasonable in my opinion.

my DH does the weird man thing of singing on the loo for half an hour which means I’m never going back to one loo

Sitting - id probably LTB if he sang

AlwaysLatte · 19/03/2023 00:52

Just one upstairs and one downstairs.
And 9 people. Are you mad??

sunglassesonthetable · 19/03/2023 00:57

Re all the cat panic on here. Growing up, all our cats went out at night ( through choice ) and came back in the morning. In all weathers. There was no such thing as a cat who "stayed indoors".

So as we snuggled off to sleep in our warm beds they were out in the dark and the weather. That's because they were cats (not humans).

ozymandiusking · 19/03/2023 01:06

Sometimes you can pop to the loo for a wee, but your body decides it needs a poo as well! Just put some air freshners in there maybe a spray as well. I don't know what's wrong with you. It's not going on the food in the kitchen. I assume there is a wash hand basin, hot water, soap and a towel. I visit a house and they have 2 towels and a little notice which says, will visitors please use the eg, Blue towel, and there's a different colour for them to use, which seems sensible.
I wish we had a downstairs loo.

Panjandrum123 · 20/03/2023 12:48

@Daisydu I get that the rental market isn’t ideal and to double your family because you’re doing the right thing is hard on you.

Having the loo right by the freezer and cooker is less than ideal. Now there are nine of you, you will need two loos, so blocking it off or making it hard to use is not a workable solution. Only four of us but when eldest takes up residence, having a second loo would be ideal.

As for the cat, I have a greedy cat too, though not quite as bad as yours. He’d go on work surfaces because OH won’t tolerate it. Cats can be trained, you might want to get a water pistol to squirt at him. Put out garlic and citrus peel 🍊 🍋 on your work surfaces. Cats generally hate these smells so will stay away.

Ifnotdufferswontdrown · 20/03/2023 13:03

Sorry, late to the thread! As someone has said, a box of matches will do the trick - lighting a match for a couple of seconds burns off all the gases and really does get rid of any smells (even persuades teens to use the bathroom straight after a sibling has stunk the place out! We have a box in every bathroom). That plus everyone being trained to close the lid to flush every time might help you mind it less?
