To want to shut off downstairs toilet

Daisydu · 18/03/2023 10:07

It’s next to the kitchen. You have to walk through the kitchen to get to it. I hate it. I’ve tried telling everyone in the house it’s not to be used for no2s because I think it’s bloody gross. But the kids don’t always listen and quite frankly I just don’t want it there anymore. We have a perfectly good bathroom upstairs. 9 people in our house though which does make me question in a bit. We’re renting so can’t get rid of it altogether but we also have zero storage in this house so we could use it for that. What do you guys think? Would I be silly to just shut it off? Honestly the fact it’s next to the kitchen winds me up

and not and. That's like having the toilet in a kitchen cupboard.
Yuk.

This. You sound horrible "I hate" " I don't want" What about the other 8 people in your house? And why have a cat just to lock it out. Words fail me

Yes I’m a horrible person, I hadn’t at all considered the other people in my house that’s why I posted this thread 🙄, if I wasn’t bothered surely I’d just do it. As for the cat well that’s another thread but I think you sound horrible too 🤷🏻‍♀️

You mean, the loo door opens into the kitchen, with no other door between them? [shocked]
Unless there is a hand basin in the same room ad the toilet, that isn't allowed.

Yes exactly like that. There is a sink in there. So yeah it’s allowed. But I’m also allowed not to like it 👀

@Daisydu I really feel for you. Sounds like you've taken in some vulnerable children into your home too - thank you for giving them a loving home. I don't have advice on the loo thing but I will say unfortunately you are unlikely to find anyone else who will rent you a 3 bed with 9 occupants. We rent and we have a toddler and a baby. Baby is still in our room but we had the devil's own job getting any landlord to rent us less than a 3 bed. Apparently they can pick and choose now, and didn't want to take PM tenants who 'might move in a few years when the kids want their own room '. The system is broken!

wingingit1987 · 18/03/2023 13:33

I think you would be mad to try and get by with 9 people and 1 toilet. Imagine if something like norovirus hit your household. Our downstairs toilet is right beside the kitchen and I’ve never gave it any thought. If it’s kept clean then there isn’t really an issue.

FayCarew · 18/03/2023 13:34

You have my full permission not to like it, @Daisydu .
Having said that, in a husehold of 9 and a cat, I'd probably just let it go.
Cats have fur coats.

Burgoo · 18/03/2023 13:34

Why is it gross? It isn't like they are leaving the door open as they go for a turd or smear faeces all over the kitchen tops after use!

Not a single scrap of guilt or conscience about dumping your cat outside in the cold because he/she is inconveniencing you. Fucking hell. Poor cat. Sad I hope the poor wee mite buggars off and leaves you, and finds a family who deserves him/her more.

Oh I can only hope he does! Seriously though. So no one ever puts their cat outside for an hour or so while they are eating or something? No one? Just me? And it makes me a horrible person. Ok…

Oh the 'cats have fur coats, so it's all right to dump them outside and leave them in the freezing cold and rain' argument. Fuxake. Angry It is NOT OK to dump your cat outside and refuse to let them in because 'they've got a fur coat.' WTF is wrong with some people here? Confused Some people don't deserve to have pets.

I think I’m more sensitive about it than others clearly lol. Anyway after pretty much everyone has said I shouldn’t block it off, I’m not going to

I find that if you light a few matches it gives off a nice smell ( sulphur) masks the other not so nice one ( thanks son), I always say do business in the upstairs one too but occasionally when that upstairs occupied he uses downstairs one.

Thank you, yeah it’s really hard. For one thing we can’t find anything suitable but the one time we did, the landlord wasn’t happy about 7 kids being in the house. It’s difficult 😩

Yes. It is perfectly acceptable to pop the cat outside for an hour or 2, it really will be ok.

People managed for years with 9 people 1 toilet. This toilet per person is a relatively new phenomenon

People managed for years with no indoor plumbing but I doubt you’re still shitting in an outhouse.

Whiteroomjoy · 18/03/2023 13:46

Daisydu · 18/03/2023 10:22

Yes there is a window but can’t leave it open as it will be freezing in there and also the bloody cat will keep coming in when we want him to stay out. No extractor fan in there. A diffuser a good idea though I’ll look into it.

can’t change the door as we rent.

yes you’re all right 9 people and one bathroom would be a nightmare.

i just hate that the bathroom is directly next to the kitchen, i can’t explain why but it grosses me out.

Leave the window open none the less. Get some magnetic sticky mosquito blinds to go over window to stop the cat. Turn off radiator in there so it IS bloody freezing* and too cold for number 2, only a quick wee.
I’d also start a fine tin of anyone who leaves it smelling or dirty. If you can’t identify who then fine everyone including partner. Use a charity tin, and have an absolute zero tolerance. Make sure their air freshener on tap and all cleaning stuff.

I can honestly say in years of having various cats with all different personalities not once has one been chucked outside when we've been eating (or forced outside at any time). Poor little bugger.

Robin233 · 18/03/2023 14:01

Not sure about the loo problem
Lots of good advice here, but the cat .,,, I grew up in the countryside and we always had a cat.
And they always went out at night - all night - in all weathers.
And came in in the morning for breakfast and then slept in 'their' chair in the living room all day.
We did have a big cardboard box with thick cat blankets in the bottom , in an out house if the cat wanted shelter.
They were completely fine and lived long lives

Yea poor thing having to go outside for an hour or 2 in the day time. Absolutely horrendous way to treat a cat.

YABU for shutting your cat outside.

You think it's OK for the cat to be outside all the time? Close off the toilet, use the garden.
Get your cat rehomed instead of mistreating it.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/03/2023 14:12

Honestly don't worry - if a cat doesn't like being put out, it will simply move in with another household.

Have you read any of this thread? At what point did I say the cat is shut out all the time? Quote me. Seriously get a life.
