Unsure what to do (daughter can't pee)

Not really an AIBU, unless IAU for not taking her straight to A&E, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever come across something like this? My 10-yeqr-old daughter (who has OCD and can get a bit stressed about going to the toilet) has woken up this morning and "can't pee". She feels like she needs to go but nothing is coming out.

Has anyone ever come across something like this and if so, what did you do? She seems otherwise okay - no temperature, etc. She seems uncomfortable, but not in agony or anything.

Maybe I am being unreasonable in not running her straight to hospital - but I suspect it's going to right itself, although I will follow up because it seems very odd. She has T1 diabetes and OCD as I said, but I don't particularly see how this could be related.

Hope she’s ok. My child also has type 1 so can understand you not wanting to head straight to the hospital as mine also hates it. Hope she’s sorted quickly and back home soon.

You're right but it is hilarious reading the end and seeing how much energy people are pouring into correcting this. 🤣👏🏻

Excuse me. I was busy doing other offline things like you know caring for a toddler and talking to my husband and interacting with the offline world in general. Reading through every single post on each thread would take away from those precious moments that perhaps you are lacking! 😆😁😃

PatientlyWaiting21 · 18/03/2023 15:35

as someone who gets a lot of urine infections this is one of my main symptoms!

Sunriseinwonderland · 18/03/2023 15:39

Oh goodness poor thing not peeing properly for 2 weeks!!! I hope it all gets sorted out without too much trauma.

Or you could just read the OP's updates instead

That’s nice for you and everything, but if you’re determined to contribute advice for the OP, 5 hours after the thread started, it’s a basic courtesy to read the OP’s posts and see what the situation currently is.

Jumping in to answer only the original question several hours down the line is just not helpful to anyone, least of all the OP.

Newladyeveryday · 18/03/2023 15:50

When I was young and we went on a school trip I got so worried that I won’t be able to go for toilet as when the school bus stopped for toilet breaks we had to be very quick, so I was so worried that the bus will leave without me and when I went for a wee ( we stopped at forest) I couldn’t pee at all.
I needed to go but I was so stressed that I couldn’t. The teachers always made us feel that we keeping them and refused stopped etc so I got stressed about it

Or, you could scroll down and check for the green posts that indicate the OP has replied.

Or, you could think that after five or six hours, seven or eight pages, nearly 200 posts, someone just might have already suggested going to A&E?

Jourdain11 · 18/03/2023 16:10

Sorry... and don't worry, I get that it might have seemed a stupid query. I realised she'd need to be seen eventually, but I thought it would be better if she could manage to empty her bladder a little before going in. Poor kid, I didn't realise this had been going on for weeks! It was only today when she couldn't go at all that she really panicked.

We're still not really sure what has caused it - she's had all sorts of tests and checks but there's nothing immediately obvious. She still hasn't managed to pass urine by herself and apparently the volume of urine in her bladder when she was catheterised was really large.

I hope she is feeling more comfortable, and that they get to the bottom of it (no pun intended - honestly)

And does the App make it impossible to scroll through a thread too?

Sigh. No it doesn't. I don't use the app anyway, but this topic came up on a thread the other day and I, for one, found it helpful to know that others couldn't update the OP's comments as I did. It explained why everyone wasn't up to speed and I thought I'd share that information.

This thread isn't very long, but others are, so it's not always possible timewise to scroll through everything.

I'm really very glad to hear your DD's more comfortable now, OP. Hope they find out what caused this to happen soon too. You did the right thing by bringing her in quickly

Has anyone mentioned neuropathy/ autonomic neuropathy? Diabetes can damage nerves anywhere in the body and cause issues with things we take for granted. Such as peeing, or stomach emptying (gastroparesis) as another example.

If not, you could ask how they are ruling it out.

How long is your child type 1 diabetic, and how is the management going?

Jourdain11 · 18/03/2023 17:00

She's been admitted to the ward, for the moment. At the moment she can't manage to pass urine by herself and they can't let her home until she can, or until she's sorted out another way. They've ruled out a lot of issues it could be, but still no idea what it is!

Teder · 18/03/2023 17:03

Poor kiddo, ask them about Fowlers Syndrome. Not sure if it’s diagnosed in children but it is a horrible condition for adults. I hope it isn’t that but worth an ask.

Change2banon · 18/03/2023 17:03

I’m glad your dd is being seen - I genuinely don’t understand why you didn’t just take her to a+e immediately tbh, especially given her diabetes. Phobia or not, being unable to pee is a big deal!

Wheresthebeach · 18/03/2023 17:16

Glad she's being seen to now, and I hope they find out what it is. Sounds like it could be very painful.

Edenrose206 · 18/03/2023 17:26

Your poor girl! Very glad that she's in hospital now and getting help. I hope the investigation reveals a cause... You must have had such a tough day. Well done getting her to A&E.💐

Floralnomad · 18/03/2023 17:42

Hope they get to the bottom of it soon 💐

PregnantandPissedoff · 18/03/2023 17:52

Try and get all her tests done while she's an inpatient so she's not waiting for ages as an outpatient.
Might be worth doing an MRI of her lower spine to make sure it's not a nerve issue causing urinary retention, hope they get to the bottom of it

Gemcat1 · 18/03/2023 17:56

Why is anyone asking for advice online if their child can't pee. Sorry, that is so silly that it's ridiculous. Anything out of the ordinary relating to a child needs to be seen. If really not sure then ring the GP or 111.
