Have started a new thread as think it’s important this doesn’t just get lost on my previous thread

The Ofsted report for the school where the head teacher died has been published …

They are toxic and need reform immediately.

I think they often are, yes. They can get away with a lot, for a long time. That’s not to say that they do, but they can.

Do you work in education? I'm curious as to where you get this impression from.

I personally know of two schools in my area where the head has been suddenly dismissed. In one case she literally disappeared overnight. The LA has remained tight-lipped, but it was neither a surprise nor is she missed.

It's no longer easy for a head to just do their own thing without being held accountable.

Yes, am a teacher.

I’ve lost track a bit as there’s a couple of threads running and so I’m not sure if I posted this on here or another thread. So apols if I repeat myself.

I was once appointed to a position in middle management just before the October half term, to start at Christmas. I handed in all my identity documents, filled in the DBS and I’d obviously filled in the application form with details of my references. So I started in January and after three weeks it emerged that no DBS had been done, no references had been taken up and no one had even done the most basic checks to see I was who I said I was.

It was a pretty horrible experience but it still makes me feel a bit shocked when I think on it. I mean, I know I’m harmless enough (apart from banging on a bit probably!) but the fact that I could have resigned from my last school after inappropriate behaviour towards students, the fact I could have had a criminal record for violence or sexual offences or fraud, the fact I literally could have been anyone from the street trusted with young people unsupervised.

And in my time teaching I have seen HTs behave pretty much as they like. That’s not to say there aren’t good eggs too, but it is a job where there are few who will challenge you. The fact HTs are keen to suspend OFSTED inspections isn’t a surprise but it doesn’t mean it’s a good thing!

What you’re acknowledging is that the grade can’t actually tell you very much on its own, you need more info and up-to-date experience to distinguish between schools.

Given how damaging the grading system is, there’s therefore no reason to keep it.

No I’m not saying that at all.

What I am saying is that in order to make a fully rounded opinion of a school the ofsted grade helps with part of that.

In my opinion I do not believe the grading system should be scrapped. I do believe inspections should be more frequent so if there are any issues they can be picked up much sooner.

I know of this happening too. South of England.

Lots of headteachers disagree because OFSTED is one of the only ways that a HT can lose a position.

HT can lose their job at other times. They can and do.
HT are monitored outside of the inspections - good job seeing as some schools are going 10+ years without an inspection.

There are a number of ways that this can happen. OFSTED is only one way and isn't even a great way. We all know of good HTs who have a bad inspection for and we all know of poor HTs who manage to get good inspections.
