I’m privately renting at the moment and was asked to arrange directly with the gas engineer to come out to do the gas safety check. He text me asking when and I said either Wednesday Thursday or Friday before 12pm. I sent this on Monday this week. I presumed he would text to confirm a day and time but didn’t hear anything back at all. He turned up this morning at 8:30, I heard knocking but was in the shower and couldn’t get down in time.

Text from him saying he’d tried to call by and now landlords saying why didn’t I let him in and that I need to stick to appointments. Aibu to be annoyed? He didn’t respond to my text with the days and times or confirm, just turned up

What?! 🤣

YANBU!

Tell the landlord it's a bit difficult to stick to an appointment that wasn't made.

NoSquirrels · 17/03/2023 11:12

Tell the LL he didn’t confirm an appointment.

Isheabastard · 17/03/2023 11:19

Do you think it’s possible the engineer made the appointment direct with your LL and each thought the other had told you?

Either way YANBU. Someone here is a wanker and it’s not you.

Yanbu

But I have so much experience of this happening with contractors. I don't know if the just hope it will be OK or are badly organised. Surely it wastes their time too though?! But they very often don't call first or come when they say they will.

Just reiterate to your landlord you need confirmation first.

I think there's been a misunderstanding - it looks like your LL read "I'll be at home Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning before 12.00 so arrange the appointment for any of those times". Did he actually make an appointment or did he just pass on the same message to the Engineer?

He should have got back to you with the arrangements though.

As a landlord, I can say something like this happens almost every time. The plumber doesn’t turn up on time and then he just turns up on his way home a few days later on the off chance someone will be in. On this basis, I think it’s unlikely your landlord will blame you so don’t think too much about it.

I agree with this. It sounds like your message was read as though you were saying you were in all those times.

He could have confirmed a final time though.

If you want to be really clear for next time message back something like:
”I think there’s been a miscommunication. I gave you my availability and expected to be given an appointment within it, but didn’t hear anything from you. Moving forward I’m currently available X & Y, let me know if either of those suit and when to expect the engineer.”

But don’t worry too much. Trying to fit in those sorts of appointments is always a bit hit and miss.
