Hi, I'm really sorry as I know this isn't related to anything really. My husband left me last year and has taken all paperwork regarding bills with him. The gas bill is in his name and I need to take over paying it. He won't speak to me, anything that needs to be said goes through his mother, apparently the lady who stole my husband doesn't want him to speak to me. Anyway sorry going off topic, I don't have the account number for British Gas so when I'm trying to do anything online I can't get anywhere. His mother says he said he doesn't know what the account number is. I have tried phoning and have pressed every number going to try and speak to an actual person. Please,please can somebody help. Has anyone got a number that will allow me to speak to an actual human, as I said I can't get anywhere online without the account number. The phone numbers I've been ringing just end up cutting off. Thanks in advance

Could you not go through the IVR and press the options to be a new customer with them? you should hit a human eventually then and you can explain.

IVR is interactive voice response, it's all the pre recorded messaging and "press 1 if you have an account with us" that you get when you ring a company like British Gas.

Hi Midgemadge, I have tried every option there is, I've went through them all pressed options 1 to 5. I have honestly tried every option but in the end it just goes off.

Are you paying by direct debit. Is the account number on that?

Just do a 'home move' with them OP. You don't need to take on the existing account.

I've had to space that weirdly as it said the username 'britishgas' was not recognised when joined up and wouldn't let me post! Obv type it correctly in an email.
Include the address of the property and your phone number, tell them what's happened and ask for someone to ring you.

Also, don't over complicate it. I know you've not just moved in. This is simply a transfer of who is responsible for the bills. Give them a reading and a date and they will owe your husbands account and open a new one for you.

Alternatively, you can just change supplier.

Hi Chacha, I have went through every option, in the end it's always the same it says for you to do it online but then I can't get anywhere as I don't have the account number. It's so frustrating.

This sounds like it could get complicated, are you in the big energy group on Facebook? They are good at sorting out stuff like this

When you email them as a PP suggested, include the meter number - there'll be a unique ID number on the meter somewhere. That'll help them find the account.

Or as somebody else suggested, pretend to be a new customer. Again you'd need the meter number but they wouldn't expect a new customer to know the account. Yes your Ex would get any residual credit, but they'd also get any debt they've run up!

Go to online chat and just make out u are you husband say u can't find ur account number as u haven't got a bill and they should be able to confirm by asking address and date of birth that's what I do hope this helps

British Gas are pretty useless.
The best way I have found to get a response is via Instagram. Do you have an IG account ? Worth a try.

If you contact them with your address and meter number they should be able to find the account and transfer it. Can you set up an online account?

Just open a new account by saying you've moved in and provide a meter reading. Also take a photo of the meter.

Can you use the help chat bot on their website? Not sure if that wants an account number too.

They once inexplicably changed my name, sex and address (continued billing though...). This meant they wouldn't deal with me as I wasn't the account holder anymore 🙄. Anyway, much arguing via their messaging service sorted it as they wouldn't speak to me on the phone.
