Thoughts on Incense

I used to have incense sticks burning away in my bedroom as a teen during my hippy phase!

Today I saw some lovely incense holders and incense sticks as I was pottering around a posh shop. I hadn't seen them in years, I'm guessing they've always been about I've just probably not noticed.

I bought them on a whim as was feeling nostalgic. I've just lit one (Lime and Mandarin) smells divine to me.

I just wondered what others thought about them? If you went to someone's home and they had one burning away - do you like them, hate them, think friend had become all hippy? 🤣

I was also a hippy teenager and burnt a lot of Nag Champa in my time. It’s a smell that makes me feel so nostalgic now - reminds me of the hippy/new age shops which were about then too.

I don’t burn it so often now but do like some more natural brands of incense. I especially love frankincense when I’m meditating.

I've always used them (since the 1960s) and I also use loose incense on charcoal discs, in lovely ornate incense burners.
Loose incense produces a lot of smoke , though, so only use it in the bigger rooms.
I also like essential oils in an oil burner.
I don't know how unhealthy they may be, but I think Zoflora and Glade and all that stuff must be just as bad and don't smell nearly as gorgeous.

I love them, I used to buy cinnamon ones when Evolution the shop was still going.

Love it... also used as a student and then rediscovered it about 5-6 years ago. I have asthma, but like others while I can't stand plug-ins and Yankee candles etc, I'm mostly fine with incense.
My favourite is Satya Tree of Life - never without a box! And I love using it outside in the garden in the summer - swinging in a hammock with a book and one burning (we don't have near neighbours!)
I've recently 'upgraded' to resin, but don't like using charcoal so much.

Hate them

CaroleSinger · 16/03/2023 17:55

I use Nag Champs. I love them, my partner hates them. Who cares...

The ash pisses me off. Quite like citronella ones outdoors in summer.

MrsDoylesDoily · 16/03/2023 18:13

My sister used to burn them when I was little. I hated them then and I hate them now.

They really get on my chest.

billy1966 · 16/03/2023 18:42

Love them.
Burn them as we go to bed, so smells from cooking always completely gone by morning in an open plan area we have.

Much safe that candles too!😳

wh00pi · 16/03/2023 20:14

I love the ones I have now. Light one up when I'm done doing a deep clean in each room.

But some of them smell foul, not like 'rose' or 'patchouli' or even worse, the ones that smell of 'meditation' and 'calmness'

GlassBunion · 16/03/2023 20:19

I've read somewhere that they give off carbon monoxide. I've just googled the dangers of burning them... it's not great. Almost the same as a fag.

VestaTilley · 16/03/2023 20:21

Haha, takes me back, I used to have them as a teenager! Bought from the local New Age shop. Wouldn’t do it now- fire risk, smell is too strong and I think they’re a bit daft for grown ups 😂

Custardbanana · 16/03/2023 20:31

Love them and use them every day. If not a stick then I have an oil burner or frankincense resin warming over a tea light candle.

Cas112 · 16/03/2023 21:02

I love them but I know so many people hate them

I would buy them but I know the second I light one my DP will complain 🙄😂

Catsbreakfast · 16/03/2023 22:14

You like them, that’s the only thing that matters. Why do you care about peoples opinion? Do what gives you joy.

SallyWD · 16/03/2023 22:17

I used to burn them all the time. Then I married an Indian man and his family burn them all the time (for religious reasons). Funnily enough DH hates incense. I think I've gone off them too. I think they really affect the air quality and aren't good for you.

XenoBitch · 16/03/2023 22:20

I love them. My favourite is Nag Champa.
During RE lessons in school, our teacher always used to have a stick on the go.

Sadly, I can't use them anymore as I have a budgie.

FloraGreysteel · 16/03/2023 22:21

I think they smell disgusting.

VillanellePinkDress · 16/03/2023 22:27

CaroleSinger · 16/03/2023 17:55

A few have mentioned these, what do they smell of?
