Aibu for not wanting a dog in my car?

My sister thinks im being a bitch for not picking her up in my car when she has her dog with her.

It's a huge malamute. So it's really hairy and it smells. It would also mean having to empty my car out as its full with car seats, prams, kids scooters etc.

She said I'm being precious and a dick but I don't see why she can't just leave the dog at home (it's used to being at home).

I use my car for work and have clients in it too which is another reason why I dont want hair everywhere!

If the tables were turned and you had a pukey snotty dc and she refused to drive you both would you be happy? She is a committed ddog owner and prefers not to leave ddog at home on this occasion.. How is that not acceptable?
Shove her a vaccum cleaner and some wipes to clean up any mess.
*hairy Husky owner here..

Don’t listen to this, OP.
I don’t know the type of children some people who leave a smell in the car on any day.

Dont out your job at risk by having a smelly, hair-shedding dog in your car. It’s not worth it.

Your DSis sounds really horrible and not understanding at all.

SaySomethingMan · 16/03/2023 14:18

Ignore the people saying “the smell
wont be that bad”.

People get used to bad dog smells after a while and don’t notice it

GandhiDeclaredWarOnYou · 16/03/2023 14:21

The river???

How about you drive to your sister’s place and park there, then you both go in her car to the river where her sopping wet dog can make a mess in her own damned car?

@Bunnyishotandcross l don't think anyone thinks it's unacceptable for her to bring the dog with her...it's unacceptable to expect someone ELSE to bring the dog with them!
Your comparison isn't really fair. If her dog needed urgent medical attention and she was unable to get a taxi or anyone to take her to the vets, I'm sure in a crisis OP would oblige (l know l would). I would imagine the auntie has a relationship with her niece/nephew so yes, she probably would help out if the child was ill. OP doesn't have a relationship with the dog. You're analogy is more like asking someone to pick up a drunk boyfriend who's pissed himself because your friend/relative cares about him.

I once saw a comedian and he asked the audience to raise their hand if they had a dog then just said "In case you're wondering l'll give you an honest answer. Yes, it does!"
True

BMW6 · 16/03/2023 14:39

Your sister is an utter twat OP. Tell her to get to fuck and don't give her a lift anywhere, let alone her dog.

She can drive her own dog in her own car. If she can't drive she should learn. If she cant afford to learn or buy a car TOUGH. Her dog, her responsibility.

I am a dog owner. I would never, for a millisecond, get the hump if someone didn't want my dog in their car!

She sounds like an entitled, petulant "Princess".

feelinglikeanewparent · 16/03/2023 14:40

I'd be the same as you. My car my rules.

golddustwomen · 16/03/2023 14:43

YANBU. At all.

MrsRR1 · 16/03/2023 14:43

Vile. Would never have a dog in my car.

Duckingella · 16/03/2023 14:44

I'm a dog owner and I completely understand;my husbands car absolutely hums from carting the dogs around and no amount of cleaning gets rid of the smell.

It's inconvenient for you and also it's illegal not to have the dog safely contained in a car;we actually have a set of transK9 crates in the boot of ours. They'll offer at least some protection to our dogs in the event of an accident.

Well as a committed dog owner she Is responsible for their transportation aren't they, so she should be using HER OWN FUCKING CAR.

As for trying to compare a healthy, huge hairy and sodden dog with a very sick child - you, madam, have entirely lost the plot. Give your damn head a wobble.

Klunt · 16/03/2023 13:59

She wanted to bring the dog because "he would really enjoy the river."

No.

God no, I wouldn't even want my dogs in my car if they went in the river

OhmygodDont · 16/03/2023 14:46

To the river?? So you’d then have to drive her massive wet stinky dog back. Yanbu.

No.

So then it would be a wet dog in the car??

purpledalmation · 16/03/2023 15:10

Tell her to get her own car

RampantIvy · 16/03/2023 15:31

From the Highway Code:

When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.

Google says that you can be fined for having unrestrained dog in the car.
Why can't your sister put the dog in her car and take you instead?

steppemum · 16/03/2023 15:43

I have a dog.
I once borrowed my mums car for a few days away, just me and the dog.

I covered the whole of the inside with blankets and sheets so that when I got home and removed them all there wasn't a hair in the car.

He was a small non slobbery dog who sat nicely in the boot too.

Merangutan · 16/03/2023 15:46

You could say yes - if she completely empties the car of your things, stores them somewhere, pays for a mobile valet service to come to you after the dog has been in your car, then replaces all of your stuff. After all, that would be a fair way to ensure that she gets what she wants with minimal inconvenience to you. I have a feeling that she won’t take you up on that offer. Until then, YANBU. She’s a cheeky devil.

steppemum · 16/03/2023 15:46

can I just ooint out that to safely restrain a dog in a car all you need is a seat belt clip.
The dog wears their harness, and the clip plugs into s seat belt socket and then clips to the harness. Dog safely restrained.

Especially handy if you have seat belt plugs accessible from the boot

isitjustmey · 16/03/2023 15:50

No YANBU. It's your car so your rules. Absolutely no way I'd have a dog in my car.

RandomUsernameHere · 16/03/2023 15:55

YANBU at all, I wouldn't allow a dog in my car either.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 16/03/2023 16:04

YANBU - and I say that as a dog owner and dog walker!

Dog hair gets everywhere - I would never assume my dog was welcome in someone else's home or car - even if they're dog owners themselves. My dog isn't allowed at my parents' house (they allow him in the garden) or their car and I totally accept that.

MoiraRosefan · 16/03/2023 16:24

I have two short haired medium sized dogs. I love them dearly. They have not and will not ever be in my car.

I don't think there is such a thing as a crash tested seat belt clip. I certainly wouldn't like to rely on one for a dog as heavy as a Malamute! You can get crash tested seat harness for dogs that the seat belt itself threads through but they aren't great for big dogs as it forces them to sit bolt upright, I had one for my rough collie and he only just fitted on the seat. You need a very strong crate or dog guard and tail gate guard for a Malamute.

Patchworksack · 16/03/2023 17:29

I’m a dog owner and dog lover and it would be a ‘nope’ from me unless it was an emergency. My dog is small and smooth coated and travels in a crate in the boot. I would not expect anyone else to have her in their car, especially after a muddy walk or trip to the river.
