Aibu for not wanting a dog in my car?

My sister thinks im being a bitch for not picking her up in my car when she has her dog with her.

It's a huge malamute. So it's really hairy and it smells. It would also mean having to empty my car out as its full with car seats, prams, kids scooters etc.

She said I'm being precious and a dick but I don't see why she can't just leave the dog at home (it's used to being at home).

I use my car for work and have clients in it too which is another reason why I dont want hair everywhere!

I have dogs but there's no way they are allowed in my car. My dh is the dog car.

msbevvy · 16/03/2023 12:53

Surely this big dog would be a danger in case of an accident. Do you have the appropriate restraints etc to accommodate it?

WeWereInParis · 16/03/2023 12:57

YANBU. No one has to deal with someone else's dog.

If the tables were turned and you had a pukey snotty dc and she refused to drive you both would you be happy? She is a committed ddog owner and prefers not to leave ddog at home on this occasion.. How is that not acceptable?
Shove her a vaccum cleaner and some wipes to clean up any mess.
*hairy Husky owner here..

Sorry it doesn’t work like that. I once bought a used car from someone who had a dog. Despite thorough vacuuming, I was still finding hairs 2 years later.

Bananalanacake · 16/03/2023 12:58

I had to check what a Malamute looks like on Google, just like a Husky. I'm not keen on dogs either though no one has ever asked me to drive theirs.

ImAGoodPerson · 16/03/2023 13:01

Yep the hair would be a pain if I wasn't a dog owner, that is fair enough although if it wasfor my sibling I'd do it and give it a hoover . Mals don't really smell bad so slightly odd that your sisters one smells so much it would affect your car on a one off journey.

Unlikely to be that bad if the odd journey, different if owning a dog and its in the car constantly.

Either way the OP is within her rights to decide whatever she wants in her car I guess.

YANBU!!!

My BIL has a malamute and he brings it to our house. OMG it takes me ages to clean all the hair up that it sheds everywhere! I hate it!

My BILs car is disgusting. I would never accept a lift with him as I'd end up covered in Malamute hair!

thereshewasshewasjustthesame · 16/03/2023 13:18

She can get the boat. No.

Sistanotcista · 16/03/2023 13:20

Definitely YANBU. We have two hairy, shedding, smelly dogs. I love them to bits. They go in my car. But I would never expect anyone else to give them a lift.

As others have said, your car, your rules. But for your own peace of mind, it seems like the overwhelming response is that you are being perfectly reasonable and sane in your approach. Perhaps show this thread to your sister?

I can't ever imagine taking my mal to anyones house, they are massive and shed so much, the hair is a nightmare, I have to clear it several times a day at the moment as he's losing his undercoat .

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 16/03/2023 13:27

I would never have a dog in my car, they are smelly and dirty. If your sister had a dog she needs to find her own way to transport it.

SerafinasGoose · 16/03/2023 13:34

You, as the driver, are responsible for securing the dog whilst in the car. You don't have to do this by law, but if the dog does distract you whilst driving you can be heavily fined for driving without due care and attention.

That's aside from the point, but it's a point some dog owners don't consider. In your case, a simple 'I don't want to' will suffice. Especially if your sister is inclined to call you a 'dick' for not capitulating to her will.

YANBU.

FunkyMonks · 16/03/2023 13:38

No chance wouldn't want it scratching up my car interior or getting hair everywhere and mess no thanks.
It cheeky really to expect you to Cater to her dog.

CharlotteRose90 · 16/03/2023 13:39

God no. Don’t get me wrong I have a spaniel and he comes in my car but a husky no chance . All the hair and smell after it would drive me mad. I wouldn’t allow anyone in my car with a massive dog, the same as I don’t allow smokers.

DrManhattan · 16/03/2023 13:45

100% would not want a dog (or any other animal) in my car.

Mischance · 16/03/2023 13:49

I would not do a favour for someone who called me a dick. Now to the dog - no way would I ever allow a dog in my car.

I get a regular lift from a friend who has dogs and her car stinks to high heaven - wouldn't want that for my car.

Now to safety - dogs in cars a a massive danger - they are a distraction and should only be carried in a crate in the boot, which presumably you do have.

Dozycuntlaters · 16/03/2023 13:50

YANBU at all. I am a dog owner and adore my girl but I don't expect other people to and I certainly wouldn't be asking someone if she could go in their car. Your sister is being the dick, not you.

TomatoSandwiches · 16/03/2023 13:56

YANBU of course, however the dog seems to be more polite than your sister, perhaps give him a lift and leave your sister kerb side.

luckylavender · 16/03/2023 13:58

Not at all unreasonable

Klunt · 16/03/2023 13:59

She wanted to bring the dog because "he would really enjoy the river."

No.

I don't let my husband's dog in my car unless it's dying and needs a vet. And even then he has to pay for it to be valeted after. I love his dog but I also love driving in a clean car and not breathing in dog hair.

lieselotte · 16/03/2023 14:03

No, your car your rules. Same as your house. I wouldn't have a dog in either.

Surely you're not comparing a dog to a child?

Oh they are! That’s the thing these days people think dogs are equal to, at the very least, and frequently ABOVE people and especially kids! It’s madness they literally think they are human!
