WWYD about this situation. To be clear, I've already acted, I just wondered what others would have done and what you'd expect the likely outcome to be.

I recently ordered some clothes online from a single retailer. A fairly large amount, mostly in the sale. I expected due to the number, for them to come in 2 parcels, but it didn't and they came in 1.

I opened it and tried on the clothes, sorted them in to keep and return etc. I notice 2 items missing. Went off to work. On my lunch break I went to the help page and did an online chat, saying I'd not received my 2 items. They immediately refunded me.

I returned home. Moved the parcel and the clothes I thought were missing had fallen under the parcel.

So WWYD (I've arbitrarily selected the options below):

YABU: say nothing, keep the refund and the clothes.

YANBU: tell them, offer to pay again or return the clothes.

And what would you expect to happen, regardless of which option you chose?

You own up, or it's theft. It really is that simple

Missuspotatohead · 15/03/2023 20:25

Do you really need telling to do the honest thing. Where is your integrity.

clpsmum · 15/03/2023 20:26

I would just send them back with the other returns

she's already done whatever it is she's done - it's just a discussion at this stage

Tell them; which I'm assuming is what you've done as you said you'd already acted and there's no time restraint on changing your mind if you hadn't already told them.

But presumably someone's told you they'd have not said anything.

neilyoungismyhero · 15/03/2023 20:29

I'd do the chat again and advise I'd found them now.

Maybebabyno2 · 15/03/2023 20:30

If I wanted to keep them I would let them know.
If I wanted to return them, I would just chuck them in with the rest of the stuff. Their system will show a refund has been processed so you won't get that money back twice. If for some reason I did get it twice, I would let them know.

Me too

Maybebabyno2 · 15/03/2023 20:33

Sorry missed your last question.

I would expect then to recharge my card if I was keeping them, they might say forget it as a gesture of goodwill but I wouldn't expect that as I think it's unnecessary and was my own fault to begin with.

SophiaSW1 · 15/03/2023 20:33

Yeah I'd own up to that mistake

DimplesToadfoot · 15/03/2023 20:34

I would have to tell them, My inner Jiminy Cricket wouldn't rest up until I did.

thesurreymum · 15/03/2023 20:34

I would keep it if I'm honest.

Penguinsaregreat · 15/03/2023 20:34

I’d tell the truth because the person who packed them might get into trouble for doing the order wrong.

Sarahcoggles · 15/03/2023 20:35

I would own up

I'd do this and apologise for my mistake

user1494050295 · 15/03/2023 20:36

I would own up too. In fact I have just received an m and s order and an extra item has been added which I did t order or have been charged for. I will take it back tomorrow. This has happened before and I returned that too

DojaPhat · 15/03/2023 20:38

The solution seems very straight forward, why have you written a post about it like it's a tale of moral integrity?

lopsey · 15/03/2023 20:42

If it's a small retailer then I would tell them and either offer to pay again if you like them or inform them that you're sending them back if you don't. I probably wouldn't be so worried if it's a large retailer
