Why are we waking over AI?

When many simply can't afford to eat. Why should we be bulding more nuclear power stations when they are so freaking expensive? Did he just give the US the green light to try new experimental drugs on us? Is the budget a dystopian nightmare. Discuss?

P. S. I left an "n" out of waking.

Eh?

vodkaredbullgirl · 15/03/2023 15:21

😕

KnickerlessParsons · 15/03/2023 15:22

Why should we be building more nuclear power stations when they are so freaking expensive?

Construction projects employ a lot of people, who work for a lot of businesses, who both pay a lot of tax, so this will help the economy.
Nuclear power is greener than power from coal and oil, so we need to move away from them. We don't have big rivers, so hydroelectricity isn't as feasible as it is in Europe for example, and we can't rely on wind power alone.

emmathedilemma · 15/03/2023 15:24

is someone already trying experimental drugs on you??

Mochudubh · 15/03/2023 15:25

Who/what is AI and who is wanking (I assume that's what you meant but who knows) over it/them?

Theunamedcat · 15/03/2023 15:26

The power stations are really obvious we need power coal is inefficient and expensive (and polluting) oil belongs to other countries we need to produce our own not borrow or buy from elsewhere we need to stand on our own two feet

Nimbostratus100 · 15/03/2023 15:26

This is because of Brexit, and we are not any longer going to be included in the European Ultragrid.

Otherwise we would be benefiting from the sunshine in Spain, and the big rivers in central Europe, and in return, at some times in the winter, we would be able to sell the surplus from wind in the north of the UK

This was all predicted before the referendum. Now we are in a rubbish position.

I think we could make a lot more use of tidal turbines, but apart from that, yes, we are going to have to build nuclear plants and buy in nuclear fuel.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 15/03/2023 15:26

Artificial Intelligence? fail

Mochudubh · 15/03/2023 15:27

Ah, Artificial Intelligence and the OP is a bot. Got it.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 15/03/2023 15:29

Or it could be Al as in aluminium.

I don't know, the OP is some what confusing.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 15/03/2023 15:30

I thought it was another snobby holiday thread.

We may not have big rivers but we do have the sea, surely we could use that.

PifflePishAndPap · 15/03/2023 15:33

There's nothing quite like being barked at to DISCUSS to make me absolutely determined not to. YABU.

Also Grin grin] @emmathedilemma Grin Nailed it!

BootsTrapBootsTrap · 15/03/2023 16:00

Get stuffed with the "discuss". This isn't an English a literature exam.

JimnJoyce · 15/03/2023 16:04

er what??

TrombonesAreNotBones · 15/03/2023 16:07

I am confused.
OP what does Al mean in this context?

Also hate being barked at to discuss, it is ever so rude.

topcat2014 · 15/03/2023 16:10

I think you'll find most AI image generators refuse to create anything remotely pornographic :)

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 15/03/2023 16:11

"Discuss". Neux.

GoodChat · 15/03/2023 16:12

Butchyrestingface · 15/03/2023 16:17

I have never given myself a thrill over AI. I think this may just be you, OP. Smile

GasPanic · 15/03/2023 16:25

Nuclear power stations are bloody expensive.

And no-one has even figured out what to do with the waste we have got, let alone the waste new ones will produce.

But ... they are probably the cleanest way of generating baseload - that is power when we want it, as opposed to when the sun shines or the wind blows.

An electricity grid without a significant baseload component is very hard to manage - unless you only want power when the wind blows or when the sun shines. We are close to a state where at the moment the variability in the grid loading is going to become unmanageable, because the wind component is so high.

I support nuclear, but I wish the government would raise the funds within the UK from UK investors and the UK public. Instead they do some weird mega deals with far off countries to fund. My guess is that is because they get to shovel loads of money to their mates in the process, rather than get the best deal for the taxpayer.

Hence · 15/03/2023 16:30

What? I work in AI and I haven't a clue what you are talking about. Maybe ask chatGPT to write your next post.

WeeOrcadian · 15/03/2023 16:31

I was confused before I read this thread.

Mind = blown

PonyPatter44 · 15/03/2023 16:32

Write your own bloody General Studies essay.

GoodChat · 15/03/2023 16:32

OP this thread might be the dystopian nightmare you were worried about
