Just why?

Their coffee is quite nice, sandwiches not bad, but Jesus the racket from the desperately bad speakers or sound system or whatever the fuck the cause is for the sensory processing nightmare that is ringing through my ears now is just tortuous.

And yes I’m going to leave.

Why have anything on at all though? I know someone will come along to tell me that all the research shows listening to music puts you in a good mood so that you’re likely to spend more, etc but there is no way this noise could make you feel good.

The songs are unrecognisable. This might be because M&S can’t afford the royalties on some decent music, but there’s also the possibility that it’s one of the best songs of the last 100 years being mangled to the point of obscurity.

I used to work somewhere where some people complained about the music, I used to think if that's the worst thing that happens to you today you're winning at life.

Having a coffee is supposed to be pleasurable though. There’s a place down the road that’s very modest by M&S standards, but the sound system and acoustics are good so it puts you in a good mood.

I suppose you are right in a way in that some people don’t have a discerning ear. It must be a blessing. Of sorts.

That was in response to @Iwantmyoldnameback. 🙂

Have you ever listened to the music as you walk around BM? It's some warbly, terrible woman singing quite possibly the worst songs ever to have been recorded. I assume they do it to get around music licensing laws, but honestly, it's so very very bad you want to leave quicker.

BertieBotts · 15/03/2023 15:12

They brought in some new law in about 2005 changing the rules about what you are allowed to play without paying royalties, I was working at WHSmith at the time. We went from having a stock of inoffensive CDs that we rotated to playing this god awful compilation of cover versions that was royalty free!

watcherintherye · 15/03/2023 15:14

My local branch of M&S doesn’t have any music, not even in the cafe. In fact I’ve not noticed music in any of the branches I’ve been to recently. Is this a thing now in some M&Ss?

Some people genuinely struggle to focus and stay on task with the sensory overwhelm of shopping in a supermarket, and random crappy music playing in the aisles doesn't help.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 15/03/2023 15:20

My local m&s food has the dreadful cover versions, cause they cant be arsed to stump up the money for the real thing. It is so awful i would rather there be silence. I am sorry OP, i feel yoour pain. I thought i was the only one who had noticed the dreadful musack!

Marksandspencersutterlyshitsoundsystem · 15/03/2023 15:20

@watcherintherye I am jealous. This is the York city centre store.

It sounds as though someone has rigged their £15 Goodmans ghetto blaster up to some £3.99 portable speakers. Honestly, it’s dire.

@NailsForBreakfastTacksForSnacks I agree you’re more likely to leave quickly. Opposite of desirable.

Soft play is awful for this. It's like they sat down and thought 'how can we make a room full of screaming children worse for parents?' and then decided to stick on distorted loud music so you can't even have a chat.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 15/03/2023 15:25

Maybe its to stop people hogging the tables for meetings? I'm sure there's no music in our M and S's (that's plural cos I regularly visit 3, one super store and two food).
