Schoolgirl kicked in head by boy in unisex toilets- is the idea of unisex unworkable?

A boy in a school toilets in Coventry has kicked in a door in in an attempt to photograph a 13 yr old girl and she has received head injuries.
When unisex toilets were introduced we were told they would be closely monitored but that is clearly ineffective and they are unsafe for girls.
Do you think they should be abolished?

Yabu Allow them
Yanbu Abolish them.

My dds school has single sex toilets. They only use them as it in case of dire necessary.
There is no good reason for mixed facilities. If the reason that boys and girls want and need single sex facilities need spelling out, what the heck is wrong with the world.
Dds school is currently being rebuilt. Thankfully they are keeping both boys and girls loos.
That poor girl.

If he'd kicked her in the corridor would that make unisex schools unworkable? I am not a huge fan of unisex toilets but your logic here is somewhat lacking.

Ironically there was a thread on here bemoaning the fear of trans women in women's loos interspersed with accounts of women nipping into the mens to avoid long queues for the ladies. So I guess sharing loo space is only a problem if it's not convenient.

They enable it. I know you can see this.

Lets not forget schools are legally required to install same sex toilets.

The trouble is, as I had pointed out to me by HT, there is no legal minimum- only ‘guidance’ so they are perfectly within their rights to have only one female only/male only toilet in the whole school if they choose.

When the legislation and guidance was written I don’t think anyone imagined that schools would have lost their minds to the extent of choosing to mix male and female teenagers in vulnerable situations.

Nah, I got kicked plenty of times by girls in girls' toilets when I was growing up. Toilets don't cause gendered violence.

Were those girls trying to photograph you with your knickers down?

A corridor is not an enclosed space where girls wander round with their knickers down. Stop minimising sexual violence towards girls by males because of your beliefs about gender identity.

Did you read the article? He donkey kicked the toilet door to open it while she was in there so he could take a picture of her using the toilet.

We've had unisex toilets in our schools for years and never had any issues, other than the usual trying to vape, etc.

Here's one of those threads where, were you not to have a polling function, given the spread of posts - you might think that people were for and against mixed sexed toilets in equal measure.

Of course kids should be afforded a single sexed space to go to the loo.

Good point. The 6% are very vocal

Oh FFS. Single sex SPACES are meant specifically for privacy and safety. A corridor, is not.

Just when you think they cannot be more desperate, flailing about with whataboutery. Corridors. Well, I was wrong. They can sink to a more batshit desperate level.

Thats a liberal interpretation of the guidance. It sounds more like someone trying to worm their way out of it. Why would anyone sensible think that only one toilet is enough for a whole school? They'd have to be very invested in breaching the standards.

Numbers of fittings
''The regulations do not set the minimum number of fittings to be provided in relation to the ages and numbers of pupils. Generally the needs of younger pupils are likely to be greater than those for older ones. So, for example, a provision of one toilet and washbasin for every ten pupils under 5 years old would be adequate, while that ratio could be doubled for pupils aged 5-11 to one toilet and washbasin for every 20 pupils.
For pupils over 11 one toilet per 20 pupils would be sufficient, but there is scope to reduce the number of washbasins where the washing facilities are shared.''

Yet this poor girl experienced quite the opposite.

Just like a year 7 girl in my own DC's school who was raped at school.

Lots of different experiences. In the interests of safeguarding we go with the worst case scenario.

@Untitledsquatboulder , he wasn't kicking her like a "normal" corridor beating. He was kicking in the door so he could create illegal pornography of her, quite possibly to share with others online.

He literally couldn't recreate this crime in a school corridor, as the student would not be trapped in a cubicle with her genitals exposed. He could, I suppose, try to beat her into submission in the school corridor and forcibly remove her clothing, but this would be difficult as the corridors are not so private as the toilets - school corridor beatings I witnessed usually had teachers jumping in pretty quick.

Stop minimising the sexual predator aspect of these boys' behaviour.

In the corridor she would unlikely to have been at her most vulnerable point in the day with her knickers round her ankles changing a tampon.

The fact a boy committed this offence is not due to the toilets, it's due to his bad behaviour - he could have gone into a girl's toilet and done the same thing, he obviously doesn't mind breaking rules!

The issue of privacy is valid but as someone who was kicked in a girls toilet (by a girl) I am not sure crime is reduced by same sex, in fact bullying is worse. Best arrangement is full cubicles sell contained straight onto the corridor

Let's not bother with locks then.

The fact a burglar stole something is not due to the locks, it's due to his bad behaviour, he could have done the same thing regardless of whether the door was locked or not.

We have preventative measures for a reason - they do actually prevent this sort of behaviour. Why are we making it as easy as possible for (a small minority of) boys to sexually and physically assault girls?

If you'd bothered to read the article you'll see that these problems arose only after mixed sex introduced and that the majority of boys hate them too.

Apparently the world is all about what someone wants, except when 95% of the population want the same thing, at which point they're told 'no' because 'inclusion'. How is excluding the needs of the 95% inclusion?

The school is breaking the law.

In ALL mixed sex toilets the stats show that sexual assault is higher. The data doesn't lie.

In development charities they KNOW that single sex toilets is a prerequisite for girls to access their human right of education. How is is that this is known for other countries but our girls don't get the same rights?

How that girl will ever feel safe in school again I don't know: basically she won't.

So your argument is ‘Women, listen up! Men are going to hurt you anyway so quit trying to make it harder for them’

Of course increasing opportunity increases harassment and crime. You don’t need a PhD in behavioral psychology to work that out.

As for, well girls might attack you too! Firstly, that’s no argument for increasing the risk presented by men. Secondly, teenage boys are stronger than teenage girls. That boy can kick that door with more force than a girl his age, causing greater injury.

That you know of. How many girls who self-exclude and refuse liquids so they don't have to go all day that you know of? That's right, you wouldn't know. And they wouldn't tell you, especially in these days where a girl or woman says anything, she will get death threats and rape threats and threats of violence, and risk being ostracised. 'oh we never/don't have any issues.' FFS. 🤦 Of course you do. Ignorance of the issues and the discomfort of girls doesn't mean there aren't any.

The wishes of the trans identifying male comes before the safety and dignity of the female.

See it yet?

Why else has there been a push to unisex our school children's toilets?

What other reason could there be for putting our girls at risk of harm or putting them at risk of urinary tract infections due to the fact that many would rather not drink and use the loo than be confronted with a boy in the school toilet? Not to mention the fact that when on a period they may avoid school all together.

This is so backward. It's 2023 and our girls have LESS rights.

Men are 100x more likely to commit a sex crime than women. That's why we have single sex spaces in the first place. The response reflects the risk.

Girls DON'T 'do it too' not in the same numbers and as they are smaller and weaker also don't present the same risk of harm.

There's plenty of data on sexual assault / harassment in school and it's mostly against girls and mostly by boys.

Don't forget to victim blame too. So she shouldn't have gone in the toilet with boys present. She shouldn't be walking about with a vagina thats just asking fir trouble. Maybe her skirt was too short or she chose the cubicle with only 2 screws in the lock not 4 so she clearly didnt care if the door got kicked in.. better that than insinuate that even one boy could pose a risk
