Amazon scam

chaosmaker · 13/03/2023 18:46

I received a gift voucher from the hated Amazon for xmas from a friend's mother. I went to buy items from that site and the total came to 2p below the value of the voucher. On going to checkout, the site asked me to put in MY card details despite them already having been paid more than the amount I wanted to spend.

Why is this legal?

AIBU to be angry about them wanting my card details when I wouldn't otherwise use that site?

Lmao you sound dramatic. If you hate Amazon so much, return the gift to the sender. You don’t have to shop with them. This really isn’t worth getting ANGRY over, come on. Registering your card details doesn’t mean your card will be charged.

chaosmaker · 14/03/2023 01:32

I don't need them to have my card details. What I have ordered, they've already been paid for. Therefore it should let me pay with the voucher balance.

The point is, this is how they want to conduct business. This is their customer service article which explains they need a payment method on file to process orders but you can delete your card details from your account. You don’t have to proceed with the purchase if you don’t feel comfortable

I registered the gift card, had an amazon account years ago so have expired bank cards on it

The expired bank cards may need to be deleted from your accounts as they could be throwing up issues on your account ie Amazon asking for a replacement card on file.

SmartHome · 14/03/2023 01:59

How is this a scam? Why are you bitching about getting free items without having to pay anything?

I love Amazon personally. Quick reliable, has everything I could ever need and great customer service. Why didn't you just give the voucher to someone else?

GoodChat · 14/03/2023 02:08

Why would this make you angry?

I registered the gift card, had an amazon account years ago so have expired bank cards on it. The items ordered are enough to have free postage (I'm not stupid). The use gift balance is already ticked but it won't go through unless I register a bank card with them. As stated in my post the total is 2p less than the value of the balance which it seems I should have put in at the end rather than doing what the card said which was to register it to my account.
How do you even contact customer services? The only thing I could see was a link to their twitter help which got no reply.

How bizarre. My daughter used her gift card just fine without registering a card.

BertaHoon · 14/03/2023 02:11

She's 14 btw.

FortofPud · 14/03/2023 02:12

Try the PPs suggestion of deleting the expired cards.

If you really don't feel comfortable then maybe someone you know would swap for cash? So many use Amazon regularly I'm sure someone would (I would for a friend).

I find their customer service is normally good once you get through to them but the website desperately tries to make you use the FAQs, self help and AI. It's a lot of clicks and not very customer friendly.

You can have a quick read through their About Amazon Gift Card Restrictions and Prohibited Activities FAQ if you haven't already found that and if it doesn't explain your issue then down near the bottom of the page, in the blue footer is a list of links, on the right under "Let us help you", select
Customer Service
On the next page, scroll down a little to where it says "Here are some other things we can help with" and select
Payments, Charges, Invoices & Gift Cards
The select
Gift cards and top ups
Then
Using Gift Cards & Top Up Balance
Then
Unable to use my Gift Card Balance
and then
I need more help
You then get to choose online chat or a phone call. They still try and use AI, you answer you, but eventually you should get through to a human.

Hope you can sort it out without too much more pain.

If you’re so anti Amazon why don’t you sell the gift card minus 10% on a gift card selling all like Zeek and then just spend the money somewhere else?

bit hypocritical and virtue signalling to be all angsty and cross and “oh I’m only doing this under duress y’know…”

Wheelz46 · 14/03/2023 05:51

You absolutely can use an Amazon gift voucher without having to register your credit card details.

If you have got a pre existing Amazon account with expired credit cards and that's the account you are using, it's likely to be a suggestion to update your credit card details rather than a must!

Perhaps deleting your current credit card details from your existing account will help. I have worked in fraud for a number of years (not for Amazon) and it's definitely not a scam, just ensure you are actually on Amazon's own website and not a fake one.

User47328976 · 14/03/2023 06:15

That is not a scam, that will be their terms and conditions.

GiltEdges · 14/03/2023 06:48

Hmm what an absolute fuss about nothing.

Lougle · 14/03/2023 07:18

I don't hate Amazon at all. They have excellent delivery times, great returns policies, and excellent customer service.

chaosmaker · 14/03/2023 14:15

Thanks to those with helpful replies. Customer services said I'd have to place the order then they'd change payment details. I might ask them to take the gift card off my account and get a friend to order. To all those saying just give it away or lose some of the value, you do not know mine or anyone else's finances on this site.

Oh wow you really really need to unclench. Take the tin hat off, amazon are not out to get you.

JorisBonson · 14/03/2023 14:19

Scam 😂

malmi · 14/03/2023 14:25

Are you sure you're on the real Amazon? Your friend's mum sounds like a scammer to me. How long have you actually known this friend?

BillLius · 14/03/2023 14:28

Give the card to me and I’ll give you the 2p.

Deleted expired cards and it worked, so thank you for the suggestion.

I understand your perspectives, but you can delete the bank card from the account after you have used the voucher
