To NOT use the new wonder drug Ozempic??

It’s the one that you inject once a week and has amazing weight loss results for most people.
DP has been hinting heavily that I should try it, they would support me, cost would be irrelevant if I wanted to use it ( about £150 a month in the U.K. on private prescription)

I am 100 LBs overweight. I do need to do something about it, although at the moment I don’t have many issues to do with weight , yet. No diabetes, no pre diabetes, blood pressure normal etc but I would qualify for the drug on weight alone.

I am hesitant because I have heard about ‘the rebound’ where studies have shown that most people who stop the drug after a year, pile ALL weight back on very quickly. Plus, side affects.

YABU - try it you need something drastic, short term gain will be worth it

YANBU - you need to have major lifestyle changes and not ‘cheat’ with a drug

@GoodChat it was an adjustment but I took to it easily, as you have a pre op diet which gets you in the mindset. I was ready to be healthy. I can now eat almost anything but in much smaller quantities. I prefer meals which are protein & veg rather than carb heavy, as that can make me feel lethargic, but maintaining a healthy weight is fairly effortless now & I have no nutritional deficiencies. Would recommend to anyone with a lot to lose!

OldieButBaddie · 13/03/2023 17:52

Have you considered this instead?
www.nuffieldhealth.com/treatments/swallowable-gastric-pill-balloon#:~:text=Traditionally%20a%20gastric%20balloon%20has%20to%20be%20placed,balloon%20is%20typically%20placed%20during%20an%20outpatient%20visit.

I saw it advertised on the tube! It sounds much less horrible.

I do agree with everyone (and you) saying you may well just pile it all back on again. I think a gradual reduction in calorie intake combined with sensible choices would be a much better bet. I lost 20lb last year and I've just started the next 10, kept it off for nearly a year, but this was because I had changed the foods I chose and sorted out my portion sizes. I didn't find I was hungry as I filled up on masses of vegetables etc. When I stopped counting the calories I found that I kept a lot of the habits up so stayed largely the same weight. I appreciate 30lb is a lot less of a hill to climb than 100lb, but the principle is the same. It is hard, good luck!

Dogsarebetterthanhumans · 13/03/2023 17:53

Unbiased view from someone who will be on this for life for medical reasons not related to weight. I have nothing to gain if you do, or don’t take Ozempic so I can give my honest opinion.

if you’re looking for a quick fix, this isn’t it and when you are potentially off work puking your guts up drinking ginger tea and then suddenly you have violent diahhorea, unbelievable fatigue and headaches, you will subconsciously thank me for that advice. And it doesn’t wear off after a week, as someone else said. I am in month 8 and the nausea is just about bareable but I take less than my max dose as I couldn’t tolerate that.

if recognise it’s a marathon and not a sprint and that you can’t just use it to loose those last few stubborn pounds and be done with it, you still risk the side effects above which I have come across many people having to the extent they have to stop mid-treatment, like, seriously the vomiting can be that bad BUT you may be completely fine.

If you are I for the long haul and plan to up your exercise and down your calories and use the time to just practice eating balanced meals I would say it’s an option for you.

Yes same here. I lost 2 stone 8lbs in the months before the op, prepped like a mad woman. And then I only lost 4lbs on the LRD!! Weird. I had my op 4 weeks ago, still getting used to what I can tolerate and what I cant

MorganKitten · 13/03/2023 18:02

Why would you take diabetic medication if you’re not diabetic?

bellac11 · 13/03/2023 18:04

Lots of medications have dual purposes, sometimes they are then licenced for a number of conditions rather than the original condition it was developed for

Its now being prescribed for obesity as its a good treatment for that

No effort to maintain here it's actually hard keeping my weight up and I don't have the healthiest diet years out now . It's killed my appetite kicking myself over all the money I spent on slimming stuff clubs , diets etc. It's cheaper just to get the surgery long term. If you have a lot to lose its the best.

EmmaDilemma5 · 13/03/2023 18:07

I would try it.

Yes, you may put the weight back on. But realistically, are you going to lose it on your own?

If you haven't already then chances are you won't lose the weight yourself. So anything is worth a shot as long as it's safe.

Diabetes is a horrible disease and if you're 100lb over weight, the chances are you'll get it eventually.

Blueblell · 13/03/2023 19:05

I have lost a lot of weight using Ozempic. There are side effects but for me they were not too bad and wore off. I am a food addict and it has been a wonder drug fir me. I have saved a few quid on food too! I was suffering with sleep apnea due to being so overweight. That has completely disappeared.

Oigetoffmylawn · 13/03/2023 19:22

MorganKitten · 13/03/2023 18:02

Why would you take diabetic medication if you’re not diabetic?

Because it's licenced off label for weightloss in people at high risk of getting diabetes. It's not just a diabetic medicine. It's currently only used for diabetes on the NHS, but that's not it's only use.

And if I didn't take it, chances are I'd become diabetic at some point in the not too distant future.

GnomeDePlume · 13/03/2023 19:31

I am going to be asking about it at my diabetes review this week. I have a huge amount of weight to lose - I could do with losing around 10st.

A gastric sleeve would probably be equally effective but I have a blood clotting disorder which makes me nervous of surgery.

Poopoolittlekitten · 13/03/2023 19:36

‘Why would you take diabetic medication if you’re not diabetic?’

it one of many medications developed for one reason that has multiple uses. Viagra anyone??

Why would you take diabetic medication if you’re not diabetic?

Because it's also effective as a treatment for obesity, which is a health condition.

WiddlinDiddlin · 13/03/2023 20:03

Oooh...

Will bring this up with my diabetes nurse next week.

I am MO.. and a T2D on a basal/bolus insulin program as metformin didn't agree, liraglutide didn't get good enough results and I really struggle (physically not mentally) to eat a diabetic friendly diet due to other health issues.

I wonder if this would help me reduce my insulin intake, as currently pretty much no matter what I eat, the insulin I need (I am insulin resistant) is making me put on weight.

Poopoolittlekitten · 13/03/2023 21:30

The cynic in me doesn’t quite believe any medicine can be that effective

I very much doubt people are lying about their weight loss; they are at the end of the day eating much less due to appetite and moving more, which is kind of a condition for the Ozempic programme anyhow. The more extreme you get the side erects sometimes the more you lose because no one is packing in the burgers with terrible nausea now are they?!

Poopoolittlekitten · 14/03/2023 06:51

I don’t think anyone is lying. I’m just talking about it working for me and about the rebound issues.

I have been on Trulicty - so similar but not the same to see if it helped balance an endocrine disorder. I lost 3 stone without trying last year, but then took a 3 month break to see what happened (on consultant advice) and di gain some weight back. Back on the Trulicity now and 6lb gone in 3 weeks. Again, without trying really. I get some low level nausea on it if I get dehydrated, but otherwise, I tolerate it very well. I have around 8st to lose in total, and due to endocrine disorder, only successfully lost any weight on 800 cal a day, very low fat, very low carbs previously, which obviously just isn't sensible for real life.

scramblescrabble · 15/03/2023 11:14

The most freeing thing about using it is that it totally cuts the noise in my head regarding food. I can watch a cookery show and not be triggered by what's on screen to the extent that before Ozempic, I would have to go and eat something. Am no longer eating out of boredom - I am able to question if I am actually hungry or if I am reaching for something to eat out of something to do.

Sometimes,I have to remind myself to eat, I don't think I ever forgot to eat before. I also find myself wanting to make better choices with food.

Have been lucky and the only side effect seems to have been tiredness but that abated.

I do not have as much weight to lose as the OP but am using Ozempic because I am pre-diabetic and not only want to bring my blood sugar down, I want to reset and retrain my attitude to food.
