Unbelievably heavy period for me.
Day 3 of it literally falling out of me. I am bleeding through lil lets ultra in about a hour, sometimes 2.
Small clots too, size of a 5p.
Last night the cramps started and I am in a bit of pain from them which is not normal for me at all.
Eventually I fell into such a deep sleep I didn't hear any alarms going off this morning, or the children waking up.
Usually I have heavy periods but this is just crazy. I stood up off the toilet last night to try and have a look and it was running out of me.
Sorry TMI but I'm worried and feel horrible.

I used to get these and I’d become tired breathless and headaches. It was low blood count due to a fibroid that was removed at my outpatient appointment. The medication never worked for me but was always much better after the removal

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 10:38

@Irisheyesareshining i hope your daughter is now OK? What was causing her issues?

The uterus does not hold a finite amount of blood. It's a highly vascular organ. Where on earth do you think the blood comes from?

You need to get seen OP, by a GP if no one else. If you're feeling faint, rest with your legs elevated and drink plenty of water.

purpledalmation · 13/03/2023 10:39

@steppemum You don't seem to understand the mechanics of periods. The blood she is losing has taken 4 weeks to build up and take iron from the entire blood supply. So this blood is not from a vein or an artery. The blood is essentially older blood and not from her current circulation. It is a lining built up over 4 weeks before it is shed. Of course she may be anaemic as she has had many very heavy periods. Very little can be done at the moment but she needs the tablets prescribed blood tests for anaemia and an USS for the cause such as fibroids. If she is dizzy because of anaemia it's A&E but we can't diagnose that. Her GP I hope asked the question. I suspect your mum had very long standing heavy periods and over time became severely anaemic

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/03/2023 10:40

I would trust your instincts, you know how you feel. I would either call the GP again and explain that you feel you need to be seen urgently or go to a&e.

Is there anyone that can help with your DC?

It's the lining of the womb of course that's finite.

If a man was pouring blood like that from his penis he would be seen straight away.

Women are far too tolerant of dismissal when it comes to periods like this. I don't know what the solution is, but it is not fair at all.

well yes, because men don’t have periods so bleeding from a penis would be unusual and therefore worrying 🙄

cornflakegeneration · 13/03/2023 10:41

I don't want to worry you op but there was a thread on here a while ago where a lady had similar and it was incredibly serious. I can't remember the exact details but she got to hospital and it was definitely the correct course of action. If you're worried I would be calling 111 at least.

Bepis · 13/03/2023 10:41

If you're losing 42g of blood an hour, along with your other symptoms, I would get up to A&E. Especially with this not being the 'norm' for your body.

Duckyneedsaclean · 13/03/2023 10:43

@OnNaturesCourse do you have a temperature?

There was a similar thread years ago where OP ended up calling 111 and having an ambulance sent - she had passed out by the time they arrived. Please, if you are feeling breathless, have a high heart rate and/or a fever call 111 or go to A&E. An infection can cause heavy bleeding and could lead to sepsis.

CrosswordConundrum · 13/03/2023 10:45

For anyone suffering with Menorrhagia that’s unfortunate and I hope you are under investigation. Saying to another poster for whom this is NOT usual to (politely) crack on with it is utterly ridiculous. Women should NOT have to tolerate this. The GP has given you something unlikely to help with this period, not given any better pain relief than OTC and referred for a scan which could take ages. Not acceptable.

It’s unusual for you, you are bleeding more than a pad an hour, have only OTC pain relief and have other symptoms. I would most certainly go to A&E and am someone who usually eye-rolls at a lot of the posts on here wondering if they should.

UnfinishedBusiness · 13/03/2023 10:46

Call 111 op.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 10:48

I don't have a temp but I'm warmer than usual and I am suffering with sweaty hands and feet.

Yes I think this is the one I'm thinking of. Very worrying.

BettyOBarley · 13/03/2023 10:48

Call 111 and see what they say if you are really worried. I've had this and the GP did say if you feel dizzy or really unwell go to hospital.

I had this level of bleeding for 3 MONTHS, it was horrific. Luckily I was WFH during covid or I wouldn't have been able to go I to work. Soaking through the highest absorbency tampons in 20 mins or they just saturated and fell straight out, clots the size of my hand - it was really bad.
Have to say no one was in a great rush to do much and it was all put down to my PCOS (which has never caused me issues in the past).

I was given the T. Acid which I have to say only worked for a few days and iron tablets.
I was only really taken seriously when they saw that my iron was so low I was 1 point from needing a transfusion. I would definitely ask about iron as you being breathless going up the stairs is exactly how I was.

After being referred to gynae I'm now back on the mini pill which has stopped my periods.

I hope things ease for you soon, it really is horrendous 💐💐

BenCoopersSupportWren · 13/03/2023 10:48

The uterus holds a finite amount of blood and it empties when it empties.

But if it is emptying substantially faster than the rate of replacement, the OP could end up with severe anaemia.

Get the children looked after and go to hospital. The sooner there the soonest home again.

I'd call 111 now and be clear about all your symptoms including that you feel clammy.

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 10:51

My iron was tested last month and came back OK (same breathlessness on period) but understand that may have changed now.

I ask as this sounds pretty standard for peri menopause.

Yes you can call anytime and they will run through set questions and advise appropriate care.

strawberryicecreamice · 13/03/2023 10:53

Just give 111 see what they advise

OnNaturesCourse · 13/03/2023 10:54

Coffeellama · 13/03/2023 10:55

Call 111, the worst they can say is they can’t help you. If you do develop a fever go to a&e, that thread a few years ago has always stuck with me where the OP had very heavy bleeding and a fever and didn’t no wether or not to go to a&e and it turned out to be sepsis. Obviously it’s incredibly rare but if a fever develops seek help asap.
