To not consider this “friendly banter”?

I have a friend who describes herself as gobby and in contrast I’m a quiet person (not shy).

I can laugh at myself, make jokes. But I’m getting increasingly fed up of this friend saying how sad I am. Anything I do I’m sad or I’m an absolute saddo. I’ve heard her say it to someone else so she doesn’t just target it directly at me.

But it proper grinds my gears. I just have never felt the need to if someone told me something to say how much of a saddo they are.

She sounds a bit socially inept or a bit thick tbh.

NotTerfNorCis · 12/03/2023 20:37

Can you tell her straight to stop saying it?

CalistoNoSolo · 12/03/2023 20:39

Tell her to fuck off. She's not your friend.

BT11 · 12/03/2023 20:40

I haven't heard the term 'saddo' in years.

She sounds annoying. Using a term like 'saddo' that frequently gives off the impression she's someone who peaked in highschool 🤣

ScentOfAMemory · 12/03/2023 20:40

She sounds about 14.

TomeTome · 12/03/2023 20:42

Just ask her not to call you sad/saddo.

Pinacalola · 12/03/2023 20:43

She's projecting her insecurities onto you. You don't have to be friends with someone like that, but she's probably not meaning to be malicious. She sounds immature and insecure, and that you have outgrown the friendship

youshouldnthaveasked · 12/03/2023 20:44

She sounds vile. She’s not a friend

PennyForearm · 12/03/2023 20:45

She must be quite immature and unintelligent if gobby and saddo are the best and only descriptions she can come up with for herself and others .

One of those people that tells others “I’m mad me!”.

Most people grow out of being like that by the end of high school.

Mumsanetta · 12/03/2023 20:45

No, it’s not friendly banter if it upsets you. There’s a very good episode of Bluey on when teasing is and isn’t ok that explains this very clearly, maybe get her to watch it as she seems to have the emotional maturity of a 5 yr old.

Anyway, ask her to stop. If she doesnt, ditch her as she’s not a friend.

HomeTheatreSystem · 12/03/2023 20:46

She sounds like a total arse. Bin her off, life's too short.

Neodymium · 12/03/2023 20:47

Is your friend 12? Geez I’d ditch her.

side note gobby means something else here (Australia) 😂😂😂

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 12/03/2023 20:48

Saddo was the ultimate playground putdown when I was at school in the 90's, so presumably you're 'friend' is also in her mid 30's. I'm thinking it's time she grew up now.

OP, a 'friend' who belittles you and bitches about you is not a friend at all. Drop her and crack on with your life.

ourflagmeansdeath · 12/03/2023 20:49

She's awful. Not friendly at all. Ask her to stop and if she doesn't take you seriously then ditch her because she is truly so so mean.

BillieEyelashh · 12/03/2023 20:52

I was friends with someone in secondary school who would put me down for anything. I’d say I watched two episodes of a show and she’d do the loser cough. Obviously there was more she did. But every time I’m called a saddo it takes me back to feeling bullied at 16.

Anyway thanks everyone, like I said I can joke about myself. So I wasn’t sure if I was being sensitive.

I hate it when bullying or any form of unkindness is dressed up as banter.

It isn't banter unless both parties find it amusing.

Ireallywantsomechips · 12/03/2023 20:56

Is your friend Jeremy from Peep Show? I’ve not heard anyone use the term “sad” in years

She is not your friend OP. She’s putting you down to make herself feel better and because you’re quieter she thinks you’re an easy target.

Please ditch her!

Triflenot · 12/03/2023 20:58

What do you think she would say if you challenged her?

DrManhattan · 12/03/2023 21:01

She sounds like a total bell end

Veryverycalmnow · 12/03/2023 21:09

Alan Partridge was the last person I heard calling someone 'saaad' and that was a few years back!
Have you told her it gets you down? Or if you don't want to give her the satisfaction, tell her the 90s wants it's favourite lame playground insult back.

BillieEyelashh · 12/03/2023 21:35

Triflenot · 12/03/2023 20:58

What do you think she would say if you challenged her?

I don’t know, but each time she does it I feel a stab of embarrassment with defensiveness.
