To ask how to stop or ease coughing ?

From about 7PM this evening DH has been coughing constantly with no breaks in between. Am assuming it's covid but have no tests available.
Any tips on how to help ease it? I know he can't help it but it's been going on for hours and I am ready to sleep out in the garage....

All opiates help stop coughing, even weak ones like Codeine can help a lot. My OH is prescribed morphine exclusively to help control his coughing fits.

I think you can get codeine over the counter at the pharmacy so it might be worth getting some.

I had a horrible cough and sore throat Christmas week. Gargling extremely salty warm water helped.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 12/03/2023 01:59

Also, oddly, ice cold Coca-Cola. Drink it slowly so it coats the throat and oral cavity.

ScottBakula · 12/03/2023 02:05

I agree iced water , ideally drank through a straw so the cold water goes over the irritated bit of the throat the cold slightly numbs the area to help stop the cough itch cough spasms.

Once that is under control ( about a pint of water sipped over 30 mis or so )honey straight off the spoon and allowed to slid down the throat slowly without the actually swallowing action if possible.

Then in the morning get to the shops and buy venos cough medicine.

PuppyMonkey · 12/03/2023 09:02

Yeah take codeine and it might cure the cough but he’ll have horrendous constipation instead.Grin

Vicks on the chest and back. The menthol stops the coughing.

I've had a cough for the last 8 days now, definitely not COVID as have tested.

I've coughed so much now and two days ago I woke up and my rib cage area has started hurting, it's painful when breathing let alone coughing.

I've tried Day/night nurse, Jakemans cough sweets, honey and lemon, plain cooled boiled warm water and now taking Covonia cough syrup added to warm water.
I'm at my wits end the rib area pain, which I'm hoping is more a pulled muscle is by far the worst thing and it's genuinely making me frightened to cough.

No pain in chest area just think there's a nasty bug doing the rounds.

ToughOleBird · 12/03/2023 14:20

I’ve had the cough & thought I had COVID but I didn’t. I stocked up with Jakemans cough sweets, they’re cheaper at B&M, Savers, or Home Bargains. They worked for me. Cough medicine didn’t work. A hot drink helped. Antihistamine helped. Codeine knocked me out so I was able to sleep for a few hours. You won’t get this over the counter. I took paracetamol as well as the coughing gave me a headache. See a Dr just to play safe.

ToughOleBird · 12/03/2023 14:22

I nearly chokes to death after putting a bit of Vick on my chest, & had to wipe it off. It’s a bug that’s going around.,

SusanSHelit · 12/03/2023 14:30

Codeine (in fact all opiods) is a genuine cough suppressant. With the added bonus of also being a painkiller obviously so helps greatly with the sore ribs/shoulders and throat.

You used to be able to get a cough syrup called kaolin and morphine but I think they've stopped selling it now. You can buy cocodamol from a pharmacy though and that has much the same affect.

Also second honey and lemon. Honey is antimicrobial so use real honey rather than a honey and lemon cold remedy. Also if he takes cocodamol don't take anything else containing paracetamol like lemsip etc

JarByTheDoor · 12/03/2023 14:45

Kaolin and morphine was intended for treating diarrhoea, not coughs.

piedbeauty · 12/03/2023 15:12

Chop up an onion and put it in your bedroom. Stinks, but it works!

modgepodge · 12/03/2023 18:13

Finally found one benefit to not being in the EU, that I can still get pholcodeine and EU countries can’t 😂

BorgQueen · 12/03/2023 19:06

This is my 3rd week of horrendous coughing and it’s given me stress incontinence / overactive bladder now 🙄 along with sore ribs/shoulders - a heat pad on my back has helped enormously.
3 x neg covid tests.

Cough syrup with guefanasin helped get the rubbish up for a while but I’m only coughing up white froth now
30mg codeine at night has helped although I still cough uncontrollably on getting up.
Vicks on feet hasn’t done a damn thing, though DH swears by it.
Hot water + honey and lemon helps temporarily, adding ginger nearly killed me, made me feel so ill, heartburn and vile nausea, so perhaps I’m allergic.
I go away on holiday in 18 days, I’d better be well then, I was deaf and had a horrific sinus/ear infection this time last year, including on my holiday.

This must be all due to the little germ monkey that is my 3.5 yr old Grandson, I have him 4x mornings and 3 afternoons a week before and after nursery.

Wallywobbles · 12/03/2023 19:55

Any sucky sweets of any sort.

LizzieSiddal · 12/03/2023 20:07

Thanks for the tips, I have this cough too, definitely not Covid as I’ve tested.

About to try the ice cold cola.

FrownPrincess · 12/03/2023 20:29

Olive oil mixed with lemon juice and honey is good for dry, thickly coughs.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 12/03/2023 20:49

as a variant on honey and lemon in hot water, cider vinegar (the stuff 'with the mother') and honey in hot water - very good for a viral or post-viral cough.

otoh, I had a cough for years that cleared up permanently when I gave up wheat. Total nuisance in some ways, such a relief in others.

LizzieSiddal · 12/03/2023 21:07

Just to update, had an ice cold Coke Zero at 10 past 8 and haven’t coughed again yet!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 12/03/2023 21:41

Coke is my magic elixir for all ills!
