The BBC is catering to the government and not the general public

Now the BBC won't broadcast one of Sir David Attenborough's new series on British wildlife because it cause backlash from Tory politicians.

It’s ridiculous and indefensible.

Conservatives have wanted to defund the BBC for ages for ideological reasons - small state and all that, so it’s probably part of a coordinated plan to get rid of broadcasting funded by taxation.

avocadotofu · 11/03/2023 11:07

Definitely and it's incredibly worrying.

ThreeFeetTall · 11/03/2023 11:15

Well...they are the state broadcaster. Their income comes from the tax that is the licence fee. The government have threatened to remove it so the bbc has to do what they tell them.
I'm left wing. I love the bbc in lots of ways. But having a state broadcaster is creepy af

CalistoNoSolo · 11/03/2023 11:17

Scrap it already. It's just awful these days.

KnittedCardi · 11/03/2023 11:18

Not true. Not part of the original series, it is a standalone programme, and will be available on iPlayer.

Sockloon · 11/03/2023 11:21

Whilst I don't agree with this particular decision, I'm leaving ving how the left wing socialist cancel culture mob suddenly don't like it when they get cancelled like Gary linker.

Only good one way it seems 😂

PeekAtYou · 11/03/2023 11:25

The BBC has always put politics over the public regardless of government. Considering that the director general made a £800k Johnson, I am not surprised at what's happened.

It will be interesting to see if they start sacking people like Lord Sugar for voicing an opinion on their social media

I totally agree. Lefties not liking it up 'em.

Alondra · 11/03/2023 11:40

This has shocked me. I knew the BBC had become Tory politicised but never expected that a program on UK wildlife by Sir David Attenborough would not be broadcasted because of a conservative Tory backlash.

I'm speechless. What the fuck is happening in the UK?

coffeerevelsrule · 11/03/2023 11:41

The fucking Tories have ruined everything that was good about this country. I am so sick of them - will there be anything left once they're done?

UthredofBattenberg · 11/03/2023 11:42

Why has a wildlife documentary been cancelled cause of backlash?

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 11:42

The BBC are a left wing organisation. An awful lot of their content is about ‘sex positivity’, mental health, gender identity, etc

Even daily Mail readers want to see the program so I think there’s more to it

The idea that cancel culture is the sole preserve of the left is a huge myth. The right and their ilk have been screeching ‘ban this filth!’ about comedians, movies, songs, video games and just about anything that contradicts their worldview, since before I was born.

Remember the hysteria in the Daily Mail when Joe Lycett took the piss out of Lizz Truss? Or the general frothing when Jack Dee called Bojo a cosmic c* (even though Jack was quoting a tory minister at the time? Or when Colin Kaepernick took the knee and then became a pariah and lost his career (granted that was in the States).

The right and the left are both guilty of trying to silence opposing views, the difference is more often than not it is those with right leaning tendencies who control mass media.

We have been through this before. Just because the BBC is to the left of the Home Secretary and the government does that does not make them left wing.

The BBC could be right, left or impartial leaning. What is unbelievable is that a documentary about UK wildlife,, from the most respected naturalist in the world is not being broadcasted because a government thinks it will damage its reputation.

Is the UK a democracy, or has suddenly become a dictatorship?

TooBigForMyBoots · 11/03/2023 11:59

The Tory party have pushed our democracy and laws beyond breaking point. I worry what they will do next.

WhatdoImean · 11/03/2023 12:02

The next thing? Ask for your "papers please" before being allowed to vote.

Sadly - this is actually true :-(

Why is it sad?

Iam4eels · 11/03/2023 12:14

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 12:07

Why is it sad?

Because it excludes a lot of people from voting by providing the additional barrier of requiring ID. Some people won't realise they need ID despite the advertising, some people don't have photo ID, some people won't be able to afford to get photo ID, some won't be able to send off for the free ID card, some will refuse to engage with showing photo ID on sheer principle, it will cause delays at polling stations when you invariably get people querying it or kicking off which again will stop some people from casting their votes.

The only purpose it serves is to make voting more difficult and the groups it will mainly affect are those that typically don't vote Tory.

Voter fraud in this country is miniscule, they say it's been brought in to prevent fraud but why would you try prevent a problem that isn't actually a problem...?

jgw1 · 11/03/2023 12:14

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 12:07

Why is it sad?

You don't find disenfranchising particular groups of people sad?

PinkVine · 11/03/2023 12:14

I think it's a worry. I can't abide Lineaker, I met him once and his public persona is not at all want you get if you're a woman at a corporate do when he's the celebrity presenting. It still makes my skin crawl.

However, I really don't understand why a broadcaster isn't allowed to have personal opinions.

I think it's right their broadcasting should be neutral and that should include holding government to account more than it does, but off air seems fine to me.

PinkVine · 11/03/2023 12:15

What's wrong with the "documentary"?

maddy68 · 11/03/2023 12:16

We all need to take a stand on this
