Now the BBC won't broadcast one of Sir David Attenborough's new series on British wildlife because it cause backlash from Tory politicians.

Because it excludes a lot of people from voting by providing the additional barrier of requiring ID. Some people won't realise they need ID despite the advertising, some people don't have photo ID, some people won't be able to afford to get photo ID, some won't be able to send off for the free ID card, some will refuse to engage with showing photo ID on sheer principle, it will cause delays at polling stations when you invariably get people querying it or kicking off which again will stop some people from casting their votes.

The only purpose it serves is to make voting more difficult and the groups it will mainly affect are those that typically don't vote Tory.

Voter fraud in this country is miniscule, they say it's been brought in to prevent fraud but why would you try prevent a problem that isn't actually a problem...?

We have to show ID for all kinds of things - buying a bottle of wine, driving, buying a house. I fail to see the issue if I’m honest. I think it’ll backfire anyway, the people least likely to bring it and keep up to date with requirements are the elderly and they’re more likely to vote conservative

Moonicorn · 11/03/2023 12:07

Why is it sad?

What photo ID do you have if you don't have driving licence or passport? Which groups do you reckon are most likely not to have driving licence or passport? Which way might they be most inclined to vote? What is the evidence that voter fraud is actually a problem?

No MOTD.
No Football Focus.
No Final Score.
Radio 5 Live shows being replaced with music podcasts.

I'm delighted that GL has the support of his colleagues. The BBC needs to catch itself on and stop being the Tory Broadcasting Company.

Are football crowds today going to be united in cheering for Linekar?

You can't see a difference between requiring ID to buy a bottle of wine and needing it to vote?? The Tories have made it super simple for the elderly by having bus passes etc on the list of allowable documents. However, the equivalents for young people are not eligible. I wonder why?

Pandor · 11/03/2023 12:35

Can someone provide the evidence that fear of backlash is why the BBC has put this episode on the hugely popular iPlayer rather than broadcast tv?

otherwise it is just speculation that is being repeated as fact and getting people frothing with indignation.
Thanks.

unsync · 11/03/2023 12:36

The BBC is staffed by a load of lefty liberals suffering with a dose of wokeism. They panic when anything that might cause their funding to be withdrawn occurs. They need to stop with the social engineering experiments and get back to doing what they are supposed to.

It's not actually true. It was a sixth episode never intended for broadcast but done for iPlayer release. I haven't got the link handy but you can look it up

HannibalHeyes · 11/03/2023 12:37

KnittedCardi · 11/03/2023 11:18

Not true. Not part of the original series, it is a standalone programme, and will be available on iPlayer.

Not true. The BBC actually changed their website after the row to pretend that this was the case. Below is the original.

Well...they are the state broadcaster. Their income comes from the tax that is the licence fee. The government have threatened to remove it so the bbc has to do what they tell them.
I'm left wing. I love the bbc in lots of ways. But having a state broadcaster is creepy af

This is incorrect… they are not a state broadcaster, they are the public broadcaster. There’s a big big difference…

The BBC are not there to tow the Governments line. They are there to impartially broadcast on current affairs. Gary Lineker did not speak about his opinion on the BBC, but on his own platform. There’s zero wrong with this.

BBC should not take any action; and the public should be questioning the dodgy motives of the Tory government who are not behaving in the public interest at all.

Absolutely and the double standards are staggering.

That doesn't say where or when they were due to be aired.

Coraline353 · 11/03/2023 12:41

"Wild Isles was always a five-part series.

The sixth film is a BBC acquisition for iPlayer. It was never going to be shown on telly.

The film stars Attenborough but was made for the RSPB and WWF, not the BBC."

You are undoutedly correct. The BBC will have always intended to not show the climax of David Attenborough's landmark series about British wildlife not on its main channel but is some backwater that not everyone has access to. It stands to reasons, why would they want to broadcast a show with millions of viewers in prime time when they could instead show a repeat of Cash in the Attic with But Jeremy Corbyn.

BeverlyHa · 11/03/2023 12:45

Is there any normal human residing in the UK who even is watching this crap the BBC ?!

Sarahconnor1 · 11/03/2023 12:46

I can't abide Lineaker, I met him once and his public persona is not at all want you get if you're a woman at a corporate do when he's the celebrity presenting. It still makes my skin crawl.

I've heard similar re his behaviour.

The whole mess is just going to hasten the end of the licence fee. Both the left and the right think the BBC is biased and no-one wants to pay a licence fee to an organisation they see as being biased against their own viewpoint.

Emotionalstorm · 11/03/2023 12:47

I find the BBC very biased and they are very obviously pushing an agenda. I prefer just getting my news off Reuters now. I don't pay the TV licence see as I don't use iPlayer or have a TV.

Because it is remarkably convenient that the Tories have chosen to implement voter ID when they are running low in the polls and voter ID favours their demographic. It is form of electoral manipulation because there is a very small amount of voter fraud and a non issue. It is straight out of the republican playbook in the USA.

A lot of countries have this requirement so I don't see it as much of an issue. I'm more concerned about foreign interference.

Again it wasn't a filmed by the BBC as part of the series. It was produced and funded by someone else but is linked in theme so they bought the rights to show it from that production house, but not for air on TV, only on iPlayer. If they'd filmed it and produced it themselves with the other five episodes then your delightfully sarky response would ring true but they didn't.

not sure I understand the question, but if you are asking is anyone watching the BBC then yes, they are in huge numbers. There are viewing figures for these things.

I'd be loathe to make personal comments about him having never met him. I do however think that when we go down that road, we are steering away from the issue.

Florenz · 11/03/2023 12:52

Since the BBC has two main TV channels, why not have one of them for lefties and the other for righties? That way nobody is offended and everyone is happy?

Isitsixoclockalready · 11/03/2023 12:52

Really, the while BBC issue is the tip of the Tory iceberg. The point is that the Tories are in favour of free speech and impartiality when it suits them. No complaints were made by them when others were being paid by the BBC and espousing their right wing views.
